It’s not even the loss that’s the problem

It’s the way we lost that’s so bitterly disappointing

Fly’s mantra of being winners even when you lose was betrayed by the players today

They looked, acted and played like losers today

There was nothing in our game today that would worry the 17 other coaches.

We looked slow, couldn't chase and didn't tackle and then shot ourselves in the foot with our kicking both I50 and at goal.

Looked like a Team that Richmond could even beat

No point overreacting to this. We kick straighter it becomes a different game. Also % isn't too concerning because by next round it could flip. Things that did worry / annoy me though:
  • Sidebottom and Elliott CBA. Just no. This was the perfect game to get Allan more CBA. We become too slow with Pendles and Steele in there.
  • Bombing inside 50. Sam Taylor looked like he was going to be best on in the first 5 mins of the game. Lower the eyes.
  • Lipinski - may have got sucked into preseason form but didn't give me any confidence today.

Our backline leaked late though was holding up as well before Howe went down. Reef made some errors though GWS had all the time in the word to get a good entry. That's on the midfield.

Hard to name 3 good players today. Perryman and IQ the standouts.

All round, disgusting performance and concerning for that to happen in opening round against a side that played footy for a month longer than us last year and are missing 3 key players.

I’m dissapointed to see the clip of Fly interacting with (allegedly) Bedford, which was apparently the root cause of Kingsley arguing back.

Multiple players clearly unfit and unable to finish the game.

Midfield was weak and run all over. Lethargic and looked disinterested. Ball watching all game.

Forwards were innacurate, but it’s hard to fault them when every one of our entries was actively seeking Taylor.

Elliott did well. Perryman our best. Allan with a few moments. Moore and Howe did well.

Lipinski invisible. Naicos invisible and clearly not fit, should not have played. I’m really trying to give Reef a chance but I’m struggling to. Didn’t see a single thing that made me think he’s head and shoulders above Frampton.

A lot to work on. No excuses today. We had an (apparently) fit list apart from JDG and Titch, a month longer break than the giants and looked gassed and disinterested from the first quarter.

Mentality seems to be an issue.

Keen to see Fly’s presser.

Without a doubt the worst game we’ve played since Fly has been the coach.Limp,listless,lifeless.Just pure crap actually. No positives at all.Back to the drawing board.Hopefully the players will actually turn up for next week’s game.

I say it's time for a rebuild.

We don't hunt the opposition anymore and instead react to their pressure. Rarely at the drop of the ball. Looked slow and disjointed as a team. I think McInnes in defence, Membrey and Perryman in the side created uncertainty. Too tall around the ground as well. Much to improve we still have!

We'd better hope we can write than one off as an anomaly, because if that's indicative of our gameplan, workrate and intensity this season... we're in for a world of hurt.

Granted, GWS played that like a grand final, and granted, we looked underdone... but wow.

I haven't seen a Collingwood side so badly beaten at the contest since... geez, the bad Buckley years? GWS just wanted it more. The number of times four of our guys just stood and watched as a GWS mid bent over, picked up the footy, and burst away - without ever attempting to win the ball or even lay a tackle - was absolutely damning. Finn Callaghan and Josh Kelly - who aren't exactly contested beasts, mind you - made our entire midfield rotation look like Ryan Lonie when it came to the hard stuff.

Our workrate was also abysmal - we simply didn't have the legs to go with them in any position in the ground. Midfield too lazy to work back, leading to an astounding number of GWS entries into a wide open forwardline. If they hadn't dropped half a dozen absolute sitters of chest marks, we'd have lost by another five goals at least. Forwards too slow to apply any sort of defensive pressure to lock the ball in - it just bounced out of there effortlessly, we barely forced a repeat stoppage in F50. And defenders too hopelessly outpositoined by the absolute destruction that was occurring further up the field. It didn't matter that they were missing Hogan and Stringer when the ball was coming in to an outnumber every time. To be outnumbered so often in your own back half is more than just a concern, it's a condemnation.

But possibly the worst single component of our entire gameplan was our forward half. I have never seen a team look so impotent, structureless, and generally clueless moving the ball forward. We just bombed it long to a huge contest. Every. Single. Time. Which might work fine when you've got somebody who can actually pluck a contested grab, or bring the ball to ground... but we don't. If there's no Mason Cox in the team, this approach is simply never going to work. We know what we're getting from Mihocek, Membrey and McStay, we've seen it from the latter two for years - undersized and uncompetitive aerially when matched on the better defenders. Everything forward of centre was an absolute dumpster fire, and perhaps more concerning is the singular refusal to ever try something different. I counted two contested grabs all game - one from Cameron early, and one from McStay.

There's just so little to take from that game that I'm struggling to highlight a single positive. Gameplan - huge fail. Application and intensity - bigger fail. Workrate - the most damning fail of all. I thought Quaynor, Howe and Maynard battled hard under insane pressure down back, Elliott worked hard up front, Perrryman tried in the middle but needed support, and Cameron was solid (although to be fair he probably had to be better given he was rucking against Lachie Keeffe).

I'm not even sure any of those guys won their position, but I am sure that every other player on the ground lost theirs.

To see a team so hopelessly outclassed is a real worry. It's the kind of general malaise and apathy and incompetence that the return of two good players isn't gonna fix. If the bounce back doesn't occur against Port, and we see more of the same... this could get ugly.

Let's pray it was an anomaly, huh?

Bombing inside 50. Sam Taylor looked like he was going to be best on in the first 5 mins of the game. Lower the eyes.
Their defence as a whole was well structured and they done their homework with a loose at the top of the goal square. Like the Richmond game we targeted that area hard especially in the first half. Need to switch things up when plan a isn’t working
