It’s not even the loss that’s the problem

It’s the way we lost that’s so bitterly disappointing

Fly’s mantra of being winners even when you lose was betrayed by the players today

They looked, acted and played like losers today
Sounds like you are the one doing the betraying.

I've stated this since the match simulations. We got stiffed with the week long trip interstate, 6 day break to play a wooden spoon Richmond side.
GWS is now the game to get our fitness up which the practice games were meant for. Prime example is Naicos cramping today rather than the practice games.

Now we have 6 days to get over the fatigue to be right for Port. But they have had a couple weeks off to get over their cramp and general soreness from proper practice match scheduling.
So if we recover enough in 6 days we are back on par. If not we have another 6 day break for the dogs and the BYE gets us back on par.

We will come good. We are just stuck catching up.
And if we were to finish this year in the top 4 with 6-7 losses. Losing to one of the flag favourites interstate is not a surprise. Still a lot to still play out...

Yeah I can’t cop that, it’s not fair,

We take the piss out of Carlton etc but we don’t go DMing and harassing them
I would love to meet that dickhead face to face.
I’d jam his head in that toilet he posted.

How did we manage to get the conditioning so wrong for this game? Either players were overworked in the weeks leading up to the game, or we're way off the mark fitness wise. My gut says it's the first former.

Cramps happen early in the year, and it was a hot day, I get that, but I don't think I've seen so many players play through a second half of footy looking like they couldn't run, and the extent of Daicos cramping was a level I hadn't seen before.

We dust off and get back up for Port, but geez i hope today was just an example of a team that really poorly timed their preparation to opening round.

Beaten at the contest? We won CP by 20.
Stats can tell lies. We won CP by panic-handballing and hacking it forward, inviting pressure where clean hands wouldn't have necessitated it. We created contested possessions for ourselves. God, we were bad.

When they won a clearance they did it with such authority that there wasn't a hand on them.

As evidence, to be out-tackled 60-39 in a game you lose by almost ten goals... that's embarrassing. The giants players couldn't have a contested possession, because here was never any pressure on them.

Killed by the pace of kids… could be something in that…
If only we had access to the best young talent in the country for an extended period of time.

Even so, how many flags have they won?

In better news. Perryman was excellent and Allan showed more than enough to earn an extended run in the seniors. Reef was OK but just OK. I think our MMM forward line will click over coming weeks. It’s far from our biggest problem. McCreery showed ability to win the ball and break away when played on the ball in Q4. I think that needs to continue.
Agree with this. MMM had some bad moments but we needed prime Carey to be able to mark the rubbish entries.

Nick had an interrupted preseason and only played just over a half last week and it showed. The step up was too much and he cramped completely out of the game.

The tackling, defensive acts, pressure, tap ons and blocks around the ball and in marking contests were all truly ordinary today, made worse by how well our opposition did those things.

Love fly and he'd have his reasons, but I'm questioning Pendles on Callaghan
He is way too fast for him and absolutely killed him. Wouldn't Crisp be the better option?

And Jaicos cost us several goals with horrible defending.

With Mitchell and DeGoey out, I'm also astounded that Sidebottom doesn't get more pure mid time.

Finally, where the hell is the dare? We were so vanilla. And if Sam Taylor is better than you, take him the hell away from the contest!! Why are all 3 talls going for the same ball? Say what you want about Cox, but he would have ever brought it down more than Checkers, McStay and Membrey did today.

I remember feeling like that last year. Being sure it was just an anomaly. Hopefully this year it is. Last year it wasn’t and I am worried this year will be like last year.
If we don’t win next week, I’ll start to worry. Today was just a shocker all round. I’m willing to write it off.

Thinking out loud here , that verbal stoush on the bench between Fly and Kingsley may have something to do with Bedford squeezing the little Masters family jewels. Watch replay , Nick was at stoppage, collects ball ,” no pun intended , “ midair. Bedford squirrel grips the little master ,
watch this space ..
