I’m sure he’d simply say it’s a Marathon not a sprint. And that flags aren’t won in march. Just ask the lions last year
Might take the old fellas a few games to get going.
But geez there was some shocking skill errors on display. The 6.16 with about another 10 missed shots was infuriating.

The Lions have an abundance of young talent that’s still improving. And they won last year with five players out with ACL’s. We can’t say the same.

Agree would have been nice if we hit a few of those shots. Would have kept us in the game. Overall we didn't deserve to win. But we kicked our way out of it.

It’s one game, and away at a shithole for that matter. Perhaps wait until say round 6 before we write the season off shall we

Fly's presser.

Obviously not the start you wanted, was it much more beyond not taking your chances in front of goal especially in the 3rd term?
"This is a game where you need to capitalise on your momentum. There's periods of the game where we thought we had momentum and inaccurate kicking does hurt. It certainly hurts when you're winning inside 50s and then I think we missed 7 shots on the run; those chances you need to take against good opposition".

In the third term you were peppering at least the inside 50s, if not the goals and then the Giants were able to burst forward and get a couple on the counter. Were you able to try and set up to know that was coming and how do you deal with that?
"You could see their style of play. They're trying to build the game up faster than what they were doing. We were trapping them in our forward half well, but what you get there is a lot of density. When we win the ball back, you're going back to density. When they win it, they go in with a bit more space. We were well aware of what we needed to do. The game itself and the strengths of running and carrying was there for everyone to see from previous years. Again, we had patches where you watch this game, you can see it we had patches of dominance but just didn't connect".

It looked like towards the end of the second quarter you had a bit of a verbal conflict with Adam Kingsley on the bench, can you explain a bit about what happened there?
"Oh, I was just having a little bit of fun with Kingers; an old mate of mine. I was just stirring up and saying 'we're coming' and he just had a bit of fun. He's a bit fiery than me, I'm a bit more humorous".

It looked like from the vision that it might have stemmed from a celebration of a 50m penalty? Is that right?
"I like to celebrate all the little things. There's nothing to it. If you want to make it a story, it's a nothing story".

Are you a bit worried after we saw with Ken [Hinkley] in that final against Hawthorn last year that it could be something that is looked at?
"Honestly, we're just old colleagues and I was just having a bit of fun with him. If it's more than that...we shake hands at the end of the game and said 'we'll see you next time when we play you'".

You had some sore players out there today, how are they after the game?
"This is the time of the year where you can prepare yourself for this early season and you get yourself into a position where you get feedback and then you going to do it again six days later. We're excited to get back to our fans at the MCG. Dan Houston is ready to go playing his old team. We've got to lick our wounds and move quickly. This is AFL footy. You play good opposition away from home in hot conditions and we were well and truly prepared for this. The draw was out a long time ago and we know what's coming".

Nick Daicos was in a bit of trouble out there. Can you share a bit more on it?
"I think it was just cramp to be honest. I think a few of our players were cramping. It was 28° degrees out there so it's pretty hot".

It must have been bad timing given the sub was activated as N Daicos was having those issues?
"We were aware of Nick's cramping at half time and we were pretty determined. Unfortunately, Will [Hoskin-Elliott] had a sore back at half time which we were trying to see if we could get more minutes out of him. We sort of had to reshuffle from that".

Nick was obviously a bit limited in what he could do in the final term. Did you look at a different role for him to help him get into the match?
"That's what we were trying to do. We were trying to take him out of the middle and let him get the minutes through. One, there's him struggling a little bit and then if he comes off the ground there's another load for others. Within reason, we were trying to look after him and look after others. I think he's pulled up fine, so it's just a matter of now getting himself ready [for next weekend]".

In the first half were you pleased with how Nick was still able to see plenty of the ball despite Toby Bedford tagging him hard?
"I would have to watch the tape on the impact of the game. I think as a collective and as a team, we like to be system and roles and that. We will look at what works best for the team around those things when players are getting tagged and trying to create things for others. Nick is a pretty important piece in where we're going".

Isaac Quaynor seemed to be in the hands of the doctors towards the end of the last quarter, is there any update on his condition?
"No, I think he just got a heavy knock. Howie got a heavy knock. They were all able to finish the game out, so they should be fine".

There's been a lot of talk about Finn Callaghan in the off-season, and he's shown why there's been so much talk about him. What did you make of his performance today?
"They've got some really good players. They clearly got some key pieces out today so we saw a bit of an opportunity with what was out. I thought their backline was sensational. They defended the ground really well. They sort of us beat in the air in our forward half of the ground which then made it difficult. We got some feedback today and we'll get back to work. I'm looking forward to what comes next".

How much does Jordy [De Goey] bring if he comes back into the side next week, both in terms of what he brings as a player, but structurally. Does he free up other players to do other things?
"Jordy's a pretty important player. Pretty good player. I think anyone that says like today they had [Tom] Green out, I think he's their best midfielder they'd be going 'geez, it's exciting to bring him back'. It's always that balance like you win and you have Green out, and you lose and you've got Jordy to come in there's always that excitement for what's potentially a solution. He's got a bit of work to do to get up, but we'll see how that goes".

Are you confident he [De Goey] will play next week?
"I think it's touch and go at the moment. We'll have to assess that. He's training really well. We'll see where it lands".

Obviously in the first quarter we saw Kieren Briggs go out. A lot of talk in the pre-season about players being injured after being pushed into a marking contest. It looked like Darcy Cameron did push him, but it didn't look malicious but more like a football act.
"I hope he's okay. I did see a picture of him, I hope he's okay. We don't want to see anyone injured particularly in a contest like that. I'll have to look at the footage of that. It's a shame he went off the ground. He's an important player for them as well".

Fly makes a statement about the cyclone and floods.
"Just while I got a chance, can I just send our best wishes to those in Queensland and far north New South Wales for everything that's going on up there. A lot of Collingwood supporters [are] up there. My parents are up there, my family and friends I just wish you all the best in this time".

We heard your support for Opening Round earlier in the week, it was a really good crowd in today. You must have been happy again with obviously not the result, but the atmosphere?
"It's easy to judge it from afar, but when you've lived in the northern states anything that can promote the game up here is really opportunist and I'm all for the promotion of the whole brand of the game. I'd like to see other teams come up here a bit more too, whether it's us next year I'm not sure. I think a balance of having games up here whether it's a big crowd or membership it all flows back into all of us. You can get selfish and protect your own patch, but when the whole game grows I think we all get the fruits of that".

Going back to the marking contest, is that something you feel worried about that the AFL should be looking into more?
"I'll have to look at it and make more of a judgment during the week. From what I saw on the replay on the screen, it just looked like a football incident, but again I could be wrong".

What did you make of Harry Perryman's club debut against his former teammates?
"Harry's one of those guys that just turns up and does his thing. Very workmanlike. I think he had 27 odd possessions and we moved him back just for a little bit of structure in the last quarter. We then missed his run and his outnumber at the contest. Good start from Harry, we're rapt to have him in our colours".

Tim Membrey, first look playing alongside Dan McStay and Brody Mihocek. How did you see that working?
"We're a work in progress. You'd argue we didn't connect well forward of the ball. You look at all the numbers of our forwards, they were all sort of low numbers and low impacts in the game. We got to look at how we can connect the ground and make those guys be able to shine a little bit more. I think we're a work in progress".

On Will Hoskin-Elliott, you mentioned a back [injury] for him. How is he after the game?
"I think he's right, he's just stiffened up. Obviously, it's pretty hard to play this game when you've got a stiff back so we're probably going to do that call a little bit early but again we just wanted to see it out until the end and at that stage of the game, the game was right in the balance. I think he should be fine".

Ordinary start to the season. Up until the end of the 3rd we were almost square on scoring shots but bad kicking is bad football. We all knew the final quarter was going to get ugly.

GWS the better side.

Not interested in singling out players who had a Barry Crocker but oil beef hooked, if today is a fair reflection of the team's fitness, we're in for a long year.

We will bounce back mate.
Kick up the arse at the start of the year can be a good thing.

Was good to see Darcy Moore doing well. He and Cameron our best.

Nobody’s writing off the season but today’s performance was woefully uncompetitive. None of us imagined it could have been worse than last year’s corresponding game. We had no excuses for being caught by surprise.

And as for waiting until Rd6 to form a judgment, yep, I’m happy to. Here’s what lies ahead:

1. Giants [emoji777]
2. Port
3. Bulldogs
4. Carlton
5. Swans
6. Brisbane

I’ll back us to get over Port. Maybe injury-depleted Dogs too. The rest? Hard to see it after today. If we happen to lose to Port then we will be in a deep, deep hole. Here’s hoping for a really strong bounce-back, full of character.

All we can do is focus on Port.
We need to stop projecting forward.

We were soundly beaten today by a very good footy team. We will learn from this.

The performance was concerning. Hope the coaches and players dissect it and don't gloss over it.

Don't know if it's a sign of a team in decline or whether GWS are a hugely impressive outfit that will trouble many teams this year. Maybe we were just unlucky to be the first side to cop their wrath. Guess we'll have a clearer picture in the coming weeks.

Liked Perryman's debut. He bolsters us in the midfield, but we need others to step up and help him.

The forward line combination with the MMMs didn't go according to plan, but I'd like to see us persist with it. Sam Taylor is arguably the best defender in the competition so it was always going to be a challenging proposition for our forwards to get easy opportunities.

Fly was calm in the presser. I don't know whether that's a good or bad thing, but he seems confident in what we're trying to do.

We could easily be 0-6 IF we don't Improve but I hopefully we will Improve

The media is making a mountain out of a molehill with the verbal interaction between Fly and Kingsley.

It's a nothing burger.

Don't Listen to the Media as they just talk Shit and add nothing more then what we read on here

We need to bet Port at home. Get over an injury depleted Dogs and smash a mentally weak Carlton. If we can do that we are in with a shot.

Well not the start to the season we wanted but I’m not going to read too much into it. Bad kicking for goal makes it difficult to draw too many conclusions. We looked good enough with ball in hand but soundly beaten without it a lot of the time and turned it over a bit mainly due to better pressure and tackling from GWS. Cameron and Perryman played well, Allen was decent, Bruzz, Howe, Moore and IQ as well. Josh and Reef got lost a few times. Bring on Port. Go Pies!!!!

Such a missed opportunity with who they had out.

Kicking the ball long to the best full back in the comp who was seeing it like a beach ball was just dumb footy.

I swear Schultz kills our momentum all the time, missed that goal directly infront they kick the next 3 goals.

Would kill for a top 5 marking defender watched the Hawks live Friday night and now Taylor they are just so important.

Giants mids bullied the Pies mids with the ground ball wins.

Giants looked fitter and stronger, Pies players were cramping and looked sore late in the 3rd.

Just finished watching the game now. Played ok in patches. But GWS just too good again. Without me thinking they are Premiership bound already.

Not sure with McGuiness down back but think have to persist with that.

Any ideas why we left Naicos on the field that long after clearly seeing he was struggling with his injury.

Was WHE subbed out after Naicos injury or before? I seem to think after.

If after would have been better Naicos off. Long on and WHE stays on.

Lastly, trying to figure out why this year too we wait longer for our bye but start the season same time as the other 7 teams (excluding the games cancelled last minute) and before the rest of the league.

This was like last year rd0. Terrible goal kicking that put us on the back foot and never recovered. Towards the end of the 1st we kick a couple behind and then they got to the other end and kick 3 quick goals. Game over.

Membrey and Elliott shouldn’t be playing in the same team. They are the same player. We needed another mid or small forward for more pressure so the ball didn’t leave our forward line so easily.
