I was talking about transition defence specifically not transition attack, despite his aerobic capacity Jones tends to get exposed the other way by more natural wingers because positioning isnt 2nd nature to him. So I hope roberts takes more of the wing time and Jones pinch hits and plays more high half forward/wing hybrid role.

Playing Jones/Cox as predominantly wing in the 2nd half of last year was one of the more disappointing aspects of the season for me as it was a band aid fix to our issues of being able to transition on from defence to attack but took away some of the gains we had made in first half of season of defending the ground when we turned the ball over going into the forward 50.
Won’t have to worry about Cox on transition. He won’t play a game. Duursma having an injury free run at it, is the most important thing to me. I really want to see Martin playing 100% wing/half forward, as we need him kicking goals. Robert’s and Jones will give us options of size and speed if rotating through wing, HF, HB.

It will be interesting to see how the responsibilities are allocated for sure. I'd back Jones in to improve defensively though. He just has to get back there. His intent to contest is great.

How likely is it that Roberts makes the 23? If he is in then I think its a clear sign Scott is taking transition defence seriously with having both duursma and Roberts covering wing, but if he roles out with jones taking a large chunk of wing time and Roberts doesn't make the bench then I think we will be in for a long day/season
would be absurd to not pick him

That is not what happens at all.

He folds back immediately from the wing and their high half forwards come up to play wing which catches opposition wings between two players. Massimo then acts as a seventh or even eighth defender and he acts as the outlet pass on alot of occasions.

Over half his possessions occur in the back half for a reason and the ones he gets in the front half are when he pushes up alongside the half backs.

Does he play on an opponent, no but that is not front running, that is a structure of the Hawks.
And the hawks don’t really care if he’s on someone, as that means his man isn’t on him, and his leg is more damaging that most. J Daicos and gulden don’t run to their man most of the time either, because they’re the more damaging player

My likely side:

B: Redman, McKay, Ridley
HB: Shiel, Reid, McGrath
C: Durham, Caldwell, Martin
HF: Gresham, Caddy, Perkins
F: Kako, Langford, Draper
R: Bryan, Merrett, Tsatas
Int: Prior, Durrsma, Hobbs, Jones
Int: Roberts
I would be very surprised if this isn’t the 23.

Would Massimo vs Jones be like the weirdest matchup if they played opposed on the wing? Jones would win the aerial contests without even trying. Meanwhile Massimo has the hurt factor with his kicking and would probably get off Jones with his smarts and agility.

Jones as a wing seems like it'll be a constant evaluation of whether we can get enough benefit from marking on the wing to justify not having a better/more dangerous user of the ball in the position. He'll need to take lots of marks and add some goals I think to justify his inclusion other a more traditional winger (over the course of the season).

On the game as a whole I'm really excited to see what our new dynamic looks like in a real game. I thought the signs looked good in the preseason and the team is pretty healthy. So we should see a pretty competitive effort. Hawks go in deserved favourites but I still give us a chance. Forward line the most fascinating area for mine. Can our youth stand up against their experienced quality?

B- McGrath McKay Prior
HB- Redman Reid Ridley
C- Martin Durham Duursma
HF- Perkins Caddy Jones
F- Kako Langford Gresham
FOLL- Draper Tsatsas Merrett
I/C- Caldwell, Bryan, Shiel, Roberts
Sub- Hobbs

Emerg- Saad, Edwards, Hayes, Setterfield

Bring me these absurdly overrated campaigners.

Its Thursday afternoon - game starts Friday evening and still no team....??

Am I missing something do they normally wait this long to announce the Teams when they are playing the next day?

Jones ball use is pretty good, quite like him kicking inside 50. The big question with Jones is that can he fill that wing role in terms of defensive running and positioning - when he was playing on the wing last year that was a big reason why we would get carved up on rebound.

You're not going to believe this, but they're going to announce it both the same day of the week and the same time they've announced it for years now
