Haven’t watched the game but it appears we weren’t in the fight when they stepped up in the 2nd quarter and onwards…

Sounds like a reflection of a poor preseason…and not enough focus on preparing well for this game.

I watched hawks ‘full sweat’ recently and it was interesting how many times Mitchell mentioned their season opener against swans and getting their minds focussed on winning that game. And they went up there and got the job done.

It makes you wonder how much attention we put towards this game over the last few weeks - did we think it was going to be a walk over?
For your sake, don't watch it. Keep the peace in your mind for as long as possible.

It actually does and massively.

If there isn't trust and belief in what coaches are doing things fall apart quickly.

This is deeper than skils or just saying players lacking effort

I don't believe the players are fully invested in what the coaches are doing
Been saying this for a long time. We're the worst skilled team in the comp. Name one elite kick in our side last night?

Agree, we are the worst side in the competition at kicking to advantage.

Also we cannot have 3 average kicks getting it 90 times a game. It does not make sense. It won't work consistently. Can't play Hewitt, Walsh and Cerra all on ball.

I love Hewett but he is a poor kick. I actually thought Cerra was good and then in 2nd half they put him at HB??

Walsh bombs it all the time. Doesn't lower his eyes. My question is why and have the coaches addressed it?

Long bombs is whats been killing us since our rebuild began. We haven’t been able to develop an effective ball movement, link up play that delivers the ball with some thought behind it.

if H and Charlie are on fire bombing goes ok/good but otherwise oppo slingshot it out easily and make us look like what we are….low IQ footballers
Every single side bombs the ball long, it's what you do at or around that contest

Yes, our ball movement needs to improve

Don't disagree and I have been saying it but why early were we hitting targets?

This is more than just skills IMO. It runs much deeper

When effort and team work falls away so do our skills.

For the first time in two decades, I missed all but the last 3 minutes of the game last night to attend a gig at the Recital centre (which appears to be something of a Faraday cage and blocks internet entirely during performances).

Once I stepped outside to check the score, I'd never been happier to have missed a game. I then got the flood of msgs from friends at the game. The resounding sentiment is "what is our game plan?".

My gut feel last year was that this list and coaching group peaked 2 years ago. I've never been a fan of the Voss appointment. Nice bloke, but I think he's far less intelligent than he thinks he is. Graham Wright is in the wings and watching. Statement moves will be made.

The only thing that saves this club from the torch-bearing mob is an improbable win next week. Only then can you say last night was an early season abhorration.

You can't blame coaching for missing easy chest marks or a 5 metre handball, a 20 metre switch kick to an open player

Voss is responsible for many aspects, but not the above

Disagree. This is deeper.

We were hitting targets and not making misatkes early. Then like usual we drop away. Last week we didn't have this issue? A little bit of pressure and as a group we fall away.

There is no belief, confidence or trust in what we are doing and this is 12 months of data

In terms of bombing long and not hitting targets…Walsh is one of our worst culprits. For a supposed ‘star’ that is really dissapointing.

I can understand people criticising players and having doubts but IMO this runs a lot deeper.

What happened to the manic pressure of two years ago? Where is the consistent effort?

Early last night we looked good. We had numbers to the ball and when going inside 50 we looked for options and didn't bomb it. We weren't slipping over or making mistakes. Then we stopped. Why?

As I have said this isn't a one off. We have been trending this way for nearly 12 months. That's the concern

This list when playing well is a finals side. Cripps Curnow McKay TDK Weitering are in their absolute prime. I have no doubt but to lead by over 40 points to a very ordinary side is not acceptable by any standards and highlights major issues within the football department

now you know why I didn't renew this year. I've lost trust

The thing that kills me already about this season is the huge difference between us and Hawthorne.

Hawthorne were dead and buried 2/3 years ago. They had no draft capital and no players.

Yet somehow they have leap frogged us massively and we have gone backwards at the same rate they have gone forwards.

You watch how clean they are compared to us, you watch their pre game drills compared to us and it just seems the fundamentals are so important to them and sub standard with us.

It’s like we have no idea how to recruit players who can use the ball and be one touch players. Our tackling is also woeful, so many tackles where the player was able to release, all night.

Our problems are coaching and recruiting.

Unfortunately we need to start again. We should have had a mini rebuild after last year. We drank our own bath water and now the chickens have come home to roost.

What a complete absurdity of an off season … Sayers shit, injuries to key players, giving up all that draft capital for 1 player who does a knee 2 weeks before the season starts, then after all the talk literally bringing the same shift as last year!

We have only beaten North and West Coast in our last 9 matches. We have given away our first pick and I fear we will finish a lot lower than we ever dreamed we could.

Welcome to CFC the club the footy gods have cursed.

Starting to think Owies was kicking goals despite of the game plan rather than because of it. Always positioned & created his own space. The arrogance to trade him away in the hope the others would start to show us something.

We don’t have a single small forward who understands the craft.

Haynes is a shadow of the player he was 3 years ago. His recruitment has unbalanced the defensive structure.

Cripps in the ruck makes me angry. What a stupid move exhausting our best midfielder.

Cerra and Walsh are bog average players at the moment

The team that put in the most effort and didn’t panic under pressure won the game simples.
Yes, Cripps in the ruck when many others (Harry, Kemp etc) could do it is madness....

Hoping Lynch gets 4 weeks for that high hit on TDK.

That is NOT true. Go watch a Brisbane or GWS. Under pressure they go deep to SPACE or low. Kicks are to advantage. No other good side kicks it high down the middle as consistently like we do

Last night we had players like Miller and Blight picking it off like they were Weitering.

Thought they could just rock up, too much focus on round [emoji638]

We looked like a side that only just started playing footy.

That’s as bad an indictment on all and sundry as there is.

Begs the question WTF did we do all summer?

Our whole football dept from top down is nowhere near the level.

There’s no coming back from here. We are cooked.

My only defence of our small forwards is early on they looked good. When you move it in with purpose and to advanatge they do okay. After qtr time we kept bombing it high and their talls just picked us off.

I admit they aren't the greatest bunch of small forwards but we don't make it easy for them
yep, can't blame the forwards really (Harry, soft as butter, aside).

Out ball movement was abysmal at best...

They should all donate their pay to a local charity.

Crippa and Weiters the only two who played up to standard (JSOS maybe too)....

Yep. That was massive. All down hill from there. Set the standard
It was so poor & just inexcusable.

Sitting the team down to work through all of the poor moments will take too bloody long.

We were simply unprepared to compete for the ball & the game - at all costs - TDK, Cripps & Weitering aside.

Voss as a player would never shirk the contest - how will Voss the coach respond?

Game on the line against a young side and we lose tackle count by 10 in last quarter.

Something is very wrong at Princes Park

Tackle count was always a good a measure of effort. In the malthouse to Bolton era I recall very very low tackle counts... like 5-10 a quarter

Disagree. This is deeper.
Of course it is, but once the Tigers upped pressure, we didn't respond, that falls on the players, but Voss now needs to make a statement so it doesn't become habitual

We were hitting targets and not making misatkes early. Then like usual we drop away.
Which changed due to the pressure change from the Tigers, but our players became lazy. Mots trying to trap the ball with his feet, players kicking the ball off the ground rather than putting their head over the pill

Junior footy levels

Last week we didn't have this issue? A little bit of pressure and as a group we fall away.
Last week GWS were in 2nd gear, it was a practice match

There is no belief, confidence or trust in what we are doing and this is 12 months of data
This side is currently Jeckle and Hyde, but ultimately this falls back on coaches to get consistent buy in

There is bombing it long to a pack where you have a good representation of talls. But we consistently treated our small forwards like key forwards yesterday. So many 40m+ kicks to Williams, Motlop and Fogarty in a one on one or two on one against

My question is we have had 6 months to respond to what happened at the end of last season. This isn't one game and this is my concern.

1 or 2 games can be outliers. Biggest issue for me now is this is a trend and the sames things happened last night that happened for most of last year

This is more than just skills IMO. It runs much deeper

When effort and team work falls away so do our skills.
I think it was deceptively slippery last night - very dewy.

Out team played like billionaires, didn't get body behind the ball & simply lost the contest (from half way through the 2nd qtr) 90% of the time.

The tigers competed & we went to water - they played like a bunch of nervous kids.

Perhaps it's more about players lack of commitment to retain front position or bring the ball to ground

How many times was Harry pushed off the line in a contest, Kemp similar

Our forward line took the lazy, selfish option/approach

We are the easiest team to play against. The game plan has not changed. Don’t win the hard ball we are stuffed, win the hard ball bomb it as high as you can and hope for the best. Our team lacks skill, speed and IQ. We play too nice and have no mongrel. When the going gets tough they all crumble and wait for no. 9 to try do something super human. 3/4’s of our players are just happy to play AFL, and don’t play for the jumper or knows what it means to play for this club. Going to be a long year, and we will gift the hawks a high first round pick!
