Coach Carlton under Voss

They looked like a training outfit out there, it was pre-season intensity.

The midfield is as bland as it gets, a bunch of coasters who have no edge – not just in attributes, but attrition. second to the ball, easily shrugged off tackles, and constantly breaking down on half forward.

I always find the yearly 'this is their year!' hype to be nonsense, they are just not that good of a side and Cripps is not the heroic captain everyone would like him to be. McKay and Curnow are too soft and miss easy shots too often.

The fact the commentators were waiting for Docherty to come on and then when he did, Docherty giving them a serious edge and a rise says everything. you can't rely on some old bloke who has a ****ed body to be the injector.

Jack Silvagni coming in too ffs, he should have been delisted years ago.

The issue with Michael Voss is Brian Cook, whose leniency suggests that Voss will not be dismissed but rather fully supported—much like Mark Thompson was at Geelong. While that approach ultimately proved successful in our case, the key difference is that Voss had already demonstrated his coaching limitations at Brisbane. By the time Carlton decides to part ways with him, their so-called fab 5 may well be past their peak.

And Carlton have tried everything.

The favourite son, the reigning and two time premiership older head crossing over from the rival, the second-in-charge to a coaching legend who finally gets his chance, the smart guy in glasses, now the champion ex-three-time-premiership-captain.

They have tried everything and nothing happens.

Carlton just have a ****ed up board, how John Elliot isn't outright hated there is beyond me. the salary cap scandal has ****ed them probably more than Essendon's 2012 issues have them.

Their off-season was a nightmare.

CEO Luke Sayers out the door in January and their #3 draft pick Jagga Smith went down with an ACL injury in pre-season training.

Best use of Vossy at this point would be to put himself straight into the midfield. Even with no cartilage in his knee he would still be twice the player of peahearts like Cerra.

Would expect them to start the season at best 1-3 before playing West Coast and North so could get back to 3-3. If they are 1-5 or 0-6 he may go then but they probably give him to the bye

I like Chris Scott as our coach and would be perfectly content for him to remain at Geelong for as long as Kevin Sheedy did at Essendon. However, I also acknowledge that, over time, fresh ideas can benefit a team.

Carlton and even Tasmania should be making every effort to lure him away. If they aren’t, then those in charge simply aren’t doing their jobs. With Brian Cook at the Blues wasting away all their potential with Vossy, I think Carlton stands as one of the more likely teams to pry Scott from the Cattery.

They have all the talent in the world but they lack a decent small forward (had one in Owies but showed zero faith) and their worst attribute is their team defence.

You have to wonder what Brad Scott or Ross Lyon would be doing with this team right now, given both of them are so focused on building around team defence and slingshot footy vs contested ball and 'star' power...

Rekon it's a bit like Nathan Buckley and probably why Rob Harvey hasn't ever got a gig: These gun players were capable of things most can't even get close to.

Very rarely does a superstar player turn into a superstar coach.

More than often it's the 'B' grade guy who had to bust arse and find alternative ways of doing things to make up the gap in pure skill.

AFL is starting to fall into the Cult of Personality trap with coaching.

However their list is similarly deficient and lacking in depth in some areas, like that Cats side was until the forward line was overhauled among a few other key changes.

Sorting their bottom 8 players out would still be needed to go all the way, even with a master coach.

That shows a distinct lack of mental toughness which is very poor from one of the stars and leaders at Carlton. I viewed him too far up the ground all too often - which i think wouldve been a Richmond tactic. Drag him out and expose his mobility on turnover.

It's interesting, but I'm not sure that's always true. Leigh Matthews and Malcolm Blight were good coaches.

Then they’d be better off with Ken Hinkley. He won’t deliver a premiership, but with no single digit win seasons to his name, he’s as stable a coach as you’ll find.

Scott would probably get this Carlton squad regularly finishing top 4 and having a Geelong 2016-2021 style run of prelims, maybe a grand final.

If I were a Carlton supporter, given the past 25 years, I’d probably take that without hesitation. I believe they’ve only finished above us once since around 2001, which speaks for itself.

Few people have been calling it out for a while that he will happily follow his man on decoy leads everywhere. Great if he never loses a contest to them but not great if teams just play around him. Doesnt look like he will be willing to risk leaving his man enough to try and intercept elsewhere and help the other defenders out. Might be too worried about his own stats to really worry about the whole team defence
