thanks, looks a likely type and size.

Just looking through his draft year info and seems he is very versatile, inside outside mid, penetrating kick, prolific ball winner, great agility and workrate and could play on any line.
Your description of similar player to Gross but more physically developed seems very accurate.
Maybe you found 1 here, could do worse than MSD if there isn't a KDEF option out there.
Put him in the WAFL and see how he develops.
Clancy Dennis would be the KPD option

totally agree, hope he starts well and is over his injury at the end of last year.
I would rather get players like Dennis and Cochrane as rookie/MSD types and develop them.
They are the types we can develop alongside our NGA's and hopefully get a player out of them.

We are in serious need of talent in both midfield & KDEF, and high footy IQ types like these are more hope of making AFL types than persisting with injury prone players that have been on the list for 3-4 yrs and or not progressing.
We have at least 3?

All players with 2025 contract expiry dates can move on for mine.

We will get something good for Allen and something average for Kelly.

The time has come to load up further on kids and play them.
that's 16 players?
cant draft that many?

No he’s not. Hasn’t given 8 years service.
Yeah, my bad. I meant he's not a free hit. Out of contract, but can't sign anywhere he chooses.

He's either offered a new contract, or he ends up becoming a delisted free agent, unless a team really wants to trade for him.

Why would we pay Gov decent money if we are making the conscious decision that he is there only to support the young guys coming through, and we will be going all in by selecting the likes of Brock, Bazzo, Hedwards, CJaimeson, etc.?

It's the nice guy attitude that has put us here. We have to move on sooner or later. It's going to be a tough pill to swallow and will get people offside but if we are to fast track the rebuild it needs to happen.
Because he has always lived up to his side of the bargain that's why.

A loyal heart and soul player for the club unlike some others.
Was AA last year so still playing good footy.
You don't insult a player like that with rookie wages.

He probably deserves around $500 000 to $600 000 per year.

Some of those players you mention hardly deserve a game, let alone getting paid more than Gov.

All of these players, I think would add a bit of hardness to the side.

Cory Grocock

Boyd Woodcock

Jed Laycock

Shai Hiscock

Jye Peacock

Austin Ball

Zane Cochrane

Jack Cocking

* I give up on this bad joke, it'll take be hours. LOTs of people with double entendre names.
I've barely started with the ****'s, let alone the balls, sacks of various spelling and other which sound banworthy.

(Should I have started with the balls first and worked my way to the *****?

It’s been just over 6 months since the bloke won his 5th All Australian jacket, and you’re ready to throw rookie money at him, or move on from him?

I know he hadn’t started 2025 off in great form, but the bloke is a warrior, and deserves to be respected and selected based on still being our best KPD by far.

I understand the notion of wanting to get games into the kids, but Gov is not like a Sheed, Gaff or Darling. He’s been a tremendous player, was a top 2-3 KPD in the league last season, and offers us a hell of a lot in terms of on-field leadership and guidance for the younger guys, particularly in the backline.

We start cutting the few good older guys we have left, and we run the risk of ending up like Norf, with no on-field leadership or experience, and we get stuck in a never-ending rebuild. I’m not saying let him play on forever, but I think he’s good for another year or two, unless injuries make him want to hang the boots up.

Two points.
1. KELLY...The end of the year if he doesn't want to go or Freo don't want him. Then he ain't leaving the state. So we offer him a very heavily incentive based contract. He can earn money if he performs.
2. After the start to the year it is 100% clear that we CAN NOT trade for Warner. Hopefully he stays until he is a free agent. We need a multitude of high draft picks for at least the next two years.

I have no idea how to search for this, but I wonder how many Brownlow votes Kelly has got since joining WC, when was the last time TK was BOG for WC.

In total, T.Kelly has polled 40 Brownlow votes during his time with West Coast.

In his two seasons at Geelong, he polled a total of 37 votes.

The last time he polled a 3 vote game was Round 21, 2023 against Essendon (the match where the Bombers won at the end by a point and the Eagles were accused of tanking).

Conversely a good player in a poor side can poll a lot of Brownlow votes
Yes, but not in a side that’s been getting flogged like we have for the past few seasons. The games would need to be relatively close for the losing side to have any players get votes.

Members mentioned that some haven't come on and that some elder statesmen of the team continue to take a spot in B22.

I am not ready to throw rookie money at him or move him on yet...

I suggested it's a rock-and-hard place to decide where to go next. Again, what we can do is keep guys like McGovern, who is and will continue to be the best 22 this year, next year, and probably the year after.

OR, we have to rip the band-aid off and say, no matter how good he is, we are planning and playing to go all in with youth.

Next year is year 4 (or 5, depending on who you ask) of the rebuild, and there are still a lot of question marks about which kids have the goods to make it. Rightly or wrongly, I think hard calls will need to be made, and we need to just put a line in players and give the cap to the youth starting from next.

Others may feel the time is sooner, or others may feel let Mcgovern choose when he moves on.

I am just stating if we choose the former, then why continue to pay him market rate when Mcgovern doesn't provide a full season and the active decision is to go all in youth, meaning he wont play. It is more so to have him play WAFL, have some presence around the guys.

This was one of the most impressive games TK played in blue & gold by memory. Polled 3 votes too.
We had such a long injury list for this game, that even Hamish Bradshaw played his only game.

If the youth are showing enough that Gov’s spot becomes at risk, then I agree that we’d have to have some tough conversations. I don’t see that being now though, as our key backs aren’t exactly knocking the door down with brilliant performances in the AFL or WAFL team. Could that change? Sure, and it’d be a bloody nice problem to have. Guess we cross that bridge if/when we get there.

As for him playing WAFL, I just don’t see that being a world we live in at all. I think he’s either good enough to be playing in the AFL side, or he’s probably not playing footy anymore. I think he’d sooner retire than finish in the WAFL, and fair enough too. He’s one of our greats, he should determine what his future holds. If he wanted to play WAFL, then sure, but I’d be very surprised if that was something he’d consider.

Kelly is certainly out of form and I think he should be dropped FWIW.

But this revisionist shit of “oh he’s always been shit since he came over” is rubbish.

Behind NN he was our best player during the Covid years and has held up his end of the bargain for the most part. Not his fault the team fell apart around him.

Agree though that he needs to find some form otherwise he might be back at South Freo next year.

We can trade for Warner. Assume Oscar leaves via free agency, we get a band 1 pick and we trade it for Warner. Without doing anything else, our midfield rotation next year is Warner, Reid and two of Yeo/Kelly/Hall/Gross/Hutchinson.

Whether we get Warner or not, I think we're looking for a wingman with our first pick. If we don't get Warner, we use our Allen compo on an inside mid. That's pretty much our midfield complete. From that point, we just need time to bulk them up.

Forwards are fine. They just need time as well.

That leaves KPD and ruck, neither of which require a high pick.

The bulk of our rebuild is already complete. We'll top it off this year with a couple of midfielders, Walley, Banfield, and likely a KPD. And that'll be it. Job done.

From there, it's just gym, experience and rotating the handful of players that don't quite make it out for new talent in subsequent drafts.

Imagine if we somehow get pick 1 (spoon), pick 2 for Oscar, and don’t give up either for Warner? Maybe the AFL give us 2 end of first round priority picks, we trade one and our F1 for Warner, and trade the other to the Pies for Darcy Cameron.

Draft Sharp and Rodriguez with 1 and 2, along with Warner and Cameron coming in via trade.

All of a sudden we have Darcy Cameron rucking to a midfield of Harley, Warner, Yeo, Gross, Hewett, Sharp and Rodriguez.

A man’s allowed to dream, right? That would be an insane group of midfielders to carry us back up the ladder.

I'd at least check the tyres on a covno with james worpel, tough as **** another leader, 26, buys time and another good player to learn off for the kids
