There are so many directions a conversation about gaol time, escaping gaol and the focus of Dreamtime for this year could go, but I'll remain.

If I were the victim I'd be speaking with my lawyer this morning about compensation. **** him. He's a thug.
I think he's already paid him an amount through civil court proceedings.

He has already given the victim $45k as compensation so far.
Not unusual for cases like these to not end up with jail time for first offenders.
Personally I think he should have got at least 12 months jail due to the sheer violence but I am not an expert.

Will be forced to miss dreamtime, very lucky not to do some time you'd think.

He has to be at his home address 10pm-6am which means no interstate games and basically no evening or twilight games.

It’s actually quite a bespoke punishment I think. No alcohol and no nightclubs and if that impacts your job & income well maybe you’ll think twice next time.

The judge made a point to say the curfew is a punitive measure, so I really hope it stands. What message does it send if they challenge it?

Agree, a short stint inside would have been appropriate.
A high profile case is a good opportunity to set an example.

i'm still sceptical about it due to the nature of the action but i think that's a pretty cruel way to punish someone while not totally ruining their future etc.

although what he did was horrible, he did all the right things eg. turning himself in straight away, rehab, apologetic, resolved/compensated with victim. other first time offenders do none of that and still get off with no prison sentence.

the curfew part is weird though, you'd think there would be exemptions on nights he's working(playing)

It would be an utter disgrace if he got a higher punishment than normal by virtue of him being high profile. There's already a whole bunch of sentencing discrepancies in our system we should be getting rid of those not adding more.

The whole point of the curfew is that it’s a punishment pretty specifically tailored to impact him and make him consider he’s actions in future.

The judge even said this.

I agree. A higher punishment should be the norm for that kind of thuggery. The disgrace is that it isn't.

Who's that?
Geelong scumbag who just got off lightly for stabbing someone 7 times and leaving them for dead. The victim was taking the dog for a morning walk and sprung Clifford attempting to break into their car. Judge said Clifford didn't enjoy prison the last time he was in there, guess they have to factor that kind of thing into their sentence :drunk:

But without knowing the full context you can never say what an appropriate punishment is.

He ran up to a guy and belted him - he's always going to be (rightly) punished - but it doesn't mean that what transpired before is irrelevant.

Assault isn't like robbery or trafficking where there's always premeditation so broad brush sentencing rules guarantee injustices will occur.

I'm no fan of blindly trusting the experts but we can at least listen to their arguments.

I'm watching the Cassius Turvey case with interest.
