VFL ROUND 5 REVIEW

LAST week Brayden Fiorini piled up 47 disposals but Gold Coast still lost by 54 points to Southport.

This week, he made that performance look second rate with a powerhouse masterclass in the middle of People First Stadium as he put an inexperienced Sydney to the sword in securing a 47-point win for the Suns.

Fiorini only had 13 touches by half-time but had already kicked three goals to separate the contest, and he only got better after the break to finish with 34 possessions, five marks, eight tackles, six inside-50s and five goals.

David Swallow made an assured return from a knee injury, playing a full game and gathering 29 touches (13 contested) and six clearances and Sam Clohesy dominated his wing with 28 disposals, seven marks and a goal.

But despite a four-goal-to-none first quarter and threatening to blow the game apart, the vastly more experienced Suns could never fully shrug off the dogged Swans, who regularly shut off their bursts from defence and showed they too could move the ball quickly.

Fielding only four players with AFL experience, Sydney won the second quarter and twice stopped the home team’s momentum through a terrific display at the coalface from Angus Sheldrick that was well supported by Ben Edwards and Nick Shipley (11 tackles).

Will Edwards and Patrick Snell starred down back to tame Elliott Himmelberg and Ned Moyle, Caleb Mitchell looked good in a new role off half-back, Ned Bowman and Indhi Kirk impressed with their workrate and Jack Buller provided a strong target but let himself down by kicking 1.3.

Complete round review:

Indhi Kirk and Caleb Mitchell our best?

I must have watched an entirely different game.

You keep going on about listed players and non listed players but have you realised that we have only 1 listed on baller fit and then some low possession half backs alongside key position players. The players that get the ball are the midfielders and they usually are the ones that get voted BOG because they pass the stats test.

Snell and Leidler were probably Sydney's best today and they had like 13 touches each.

Think when we get some players back it will change especially a fit midfielder or two
Actual stats : Leidler, 18 disposals at 89% efficiency. Snell, 15 disposals at 93% efficiency. Both coming back from injury in only the last few games.

Snell's disposal is pretty good. And he is evidently an athlete.

But - as a key defender, strength matters. He'll be a vastly stronger & hence more complete defender 2 years from now.

I do have a worry that IF he did get selected for the seniors this year, he'll be monstered & it could knock his confidence around a bit.

Having said that, I've become more entrenched in my view that he's a real talent on the rise. I reckon we could see a very good AFL quality player in a couple of years time.

Fair i think the VFL has major updates to disposals post games but I could also have been just flat out wrong at the time of posting as well

I must admit I think both these lads are already very well built for senior football. It's a pity weights aren't provided with the player stats any more.

Snell appears to be very strongly built and could easily take on a third defender role. He could also be tried as a forward which is his true position as a junior.

Leidler appears very nuggety and has great disposal from what I've seen.He was also the fastest or one of the fastest at the combine over 20m.

I would not be surprised to see either or both of them debut this year if our injury woes continue. Hopefully they get to string a decent number of games together before that happens though.

Would be so hard to get any momentum and rhythm with the lack of continuity. I guess that's the nature of reserves, especially when there are so many injures.

I totally agree BUT I see Snell more in the Rampe/third tall role rather than as one of two KPDs. In that role I'm hoping we could see him in seniors sooner than that.
I still have hopes for Edwards but it seems he isn't coming on super well.
Leidler is an interesting case as he seems to be more attacking than a lockdown. However his draft profile refers to shutting down Dattoli and Hannaford as well as his attacking skills.
Bears watching.

Really looking at Edwards to see if he can push a case with Melican cooked. Or if its the simple Hamling down back

VFL "Around the state leagues" summary:

After dropping back to state league level for the first time this season, Tom Hanily responded strongly in Sydney's 26-point loss to GWS on Sunday.

The 2024 mid-season draftee kicked three goals from 14 disposals to put claims straight back in for a small forward's role in the seniors.

Big man Peter Ladhams also returned to the VFL and performed well, grabbing 20 disposals, seven clearances and two goals along with 13 hitouts.

Caleb Mitchell was the busiest of the Swans with 25 touches and seven tackles, while Angus Sheldrick did plenty with 20 disposals and a goal.

Academy product Will Edwards had 16 possessions, his Academy classmate Indhi Kirk had 11 and Jack Buller finished with 13.

2024 draftees Ned Bowman (10 disposals) and Blake Leidler (six) were the other Swans in action.
