Autopsy Round 9 - St Kilda v Carlton *SPUD'S GAME*

I think we will rue this game at the end of the season when we (likely) miss finals. I'm feeling pretty flat because we really should have won that.

Positives:
NWM, Sinclair both good. Steele back to his tackling best, he seems to thrive on playing against Cripps. Marshall took some good marks around the ground but I felt was beaten in the ruck. Byrnes best game of the year. Wilson got a lot of the ball, but his kicking leaves much to be desired at times. His work rate is clearly elite, but being an outside player you simply must have good disposal efficiency. It's not good enough for his kicks to be missing the target by as much as they have been.

Good to see Philippou back out there. He is a point of difference and I hope to see him in the midfield more as his body gets conditioned back to standard.

No (obvious) injuries. Despite a cursed start to the season, we've been lucky enough to have a number of weeks without a serious injury and our injury list is looking a lot better as a result. Long may continue (touching wood right now).

Negatives:
Forward line looked dysfunctional outside that first 10 minutes of the first quarter. Too often the ball was blasted in without any real idea of how to kick a goal. Caminiti is a poor forward and doesn't get to the right spots. When King returns, I would like to see him play back to allow Wilkie to take the third tall and intercept. Try putting Tauru next to King and Sharman later in the season to see how they look together.

Sick to death of our midfield going to sleep in patches where the opposition mids run it out of the centre continuously. It's happened in all our our recent losses. The reality is that our midfield is a bottom 4 midfield in the league, and it has been for a long long time. A 10 minute run of 4 or so goals to the opposition caused by our midfield being second the ball and not being able to defend their spread has been the death of us. It's great that we're blooding in new mids like Garcia and Boxshall, but we just have to expect that there's gonna be a fair few games where they get handily beaten by better and more experienced opponents.

Just about Hill's worst game for the club. I've felt at times that criticism of his game has been over the top, but I can't think of really anything he did right. He's got runs on the board so he won't be dropped any time soon, but is Travalgia strings some good games together in the 2s then I'd be nervous.

Contested marking. It's been a major Achilles heel of ours with King missing. Wood not playing also exacerbated this. Far too often I felt we were out muscled in key contests on the wing that set up Carlton attack.

Any of Clarke, Wood or Jones and we win that game.

Get rid of a couple of silly decisions by players and we win that game.

Max King fit and getting free kicks like "Charlie" or MacKay - we win the premiership.

Didn't understand Collard as the sub.

Probably snag it with Membrey also, tbh...

It's just not always black and white. You can be positive about some aspects and negative about others. If you look at our forward line it is full of B and C graders. When we dominate midfield like last week we look good. When we break even or get killed it's very hard.

It's why it's so wrong that people say we don't need King.

The forwards are young so there's upside but it's a struggle. Our one A grade forward last night was obviously sick and got subbed off.

There were still some things to be positive about last night. We really should have won though.

I wouldn't call Sharman or Owens B grade

We keep handing the opposition the ball back through shitty kicking... I for one am sick to death of it.

Yes, we also get beaten in the midfield, but even when we'd win it in there we'd just give it back.

We were a rabble last night.

I reckon they're both the definition of B graders. Hopefully both can take the next step and become A graders but they're not there yet.

Uncontested turnovers fmd we’re back to that again.

Turnstile tackling. FMD some of the tackle efforts were horrendously horrible.

Mids winning the ball at the stoppage and then going straight to ground. Looks like they’ve made an effort but they haven’t really.

They play tall and we play small so what do we do? Go in long and high.

We’re down but can still win so we should get and roll and go. What do we do? Stop and prop.

Just some dumb football in a game that was there to win.

****en sort it out rtb.

How would you know what they are with the way the ball goes in?
Unfortunately in football the ball isn't going to come to you perfectly every time. Good players create goals despite that. Sharman and Owens are both good young players but don't look A grade to me yet. We created enough opportunities to win but their backs really beat our forwards on the night.

Brad Hill needs a spell, he played like someone spiked his water bottle tonight
He was terrible
And don’t give me the “he was creating”
Every time he touched the ball you knew Carlton were getting it back
Was with a Blues mate who asked “when’s this guys expensive contract up” fair question
His disposal under no pressure is overrated

Players running in to deliver the ball inside 50 with players open and just shitting the bed with the kick doesn't help.

We hit our targets, we win that game.

Carlton are shit.

Brad Hill very frustrating tonight.

Also was it me or did we seem to slip over a lot?
Was watching the pregame and saw Windy slip over in the background and just knew.

Good news for you and your mate is that his expensive contract has already expired. He re-signed last year on considerably less, it was for 3 years but yeah, that expensive contract doesn't exist anymore.

Our forwards were out numbered and out sized, they didnt have a chance with the slow ball movement. Carlton were able to flood back and fill the holes everywhere then we couldnt win it in the air and on the ground. Lyon was shuffling the deck chairs and apart from our usual stalwarts we were basically beaten all over the ground.

It was difficult because of our slow ball movement, so we fluffed about switching play 70 metres out to change the angles but it basically allowed Carlton to set up better behind the ball. Only Nas had the cohunas to run the ball at them and create some separation in their defence. The other problem was apart from Hall we didnt look to kick to the fat side or a short lead 30-40 out. We still bombed it down the line to the contested pockets which was rubbish.

Now more than ever midfields determine who wins games and until we address that area, we are just treading water being a mid to lower table side.

Must be biggest vs Carlton then.

Either way this game isn't leaving the G now.
Proberly a prime time game as well

Spuds Game is such an incredible initiative and awareness needs to be called out strong and loud.

Here are some statistics for some posters.

  • For men aged 15 to 44, suicide is the leading cause of death
  • Men account for 75-80% of all suicide victims
  • Danger areas for men are between 18-25 and 50-55
  • Mental health issues affect everyone associated with a sufferer
I for one am proud of the initiative and the result is kind of secondary just as long as we raised awareness for all men out there.

I think there will be an entire mental health round one day with Spuds Game at the centerpiece of the whole round.

We have struggled for ages to get a marquee game.

Spuds game is that game. We have created a platform to bringing mental health in an area where its historically not been.

It doesn't need to be a big Vic Club to boot. Saints fans will show up

I thinknhe had an abductor issue last week that RTab doesn't think is an injury
Someone mentioned him hobbling at training.
I can understand why they had to give him a go with Curnow and McKay but now he needs to get it right before playing again.
