After a win against 18th placed WCE, we now front up against 17th placed North, who managed to draw with the reigning premiers in Hobart on Sunday evening in a game where both teams will have circled on their fixture as a winnable game.
A Richmond win would see us win back to back games for the first time since rounds 17-19 2023 and also mean that we'd doubled last years total wins in less than half a season, which suggests that the team is gradually improving under Yze now that he has a more settled list and team selections from week to week.
Meanwhile North whose sole win this year was a 10 goal thumping of a then hapless Melbourne will be trying to finally secure their 2nd win after just falling short in their last 3 games against reasonable opposition in Port Essendon & Brisbane (combined margin is 9 points) to ease some of the media scrutiny that has come there way as they still find themselves in the bottom 2 despite all their high end draft picks they have stockpiled over the last few years.
Which means that this game has plenty riding on it already without forgetting that we also hold their R1 pick this year so us getting the win will make it that little bit harder for them to pass us on the ladder, which could mean a guaranteed top 2 pick is in the mix should North continue to find new ways to fail.
Despite North being a bottom 2 side we showed against the Eagles that we're not exactly world beaters ourselves and if we give North the same sort of sniff that we gave the Eagles we could very well be on the losing end come the final siren Sunday afternoon. Statistically North are better than us in a number of areas, they average more disposals, goals, hitouts, clearances, I50s, contested possessions, marks I50 & tackles I50.
Having said all that I'm expecting this game to be another battle between 2 sides both desperate to win who will be doing all they can to secure the 4 points. FWIW this game shapes as a possible preview of the type of clashes that the 2 sides could be having over the next decade should both teams get their respective rebuilds right.
Predicted Line Up:
Out: Trezise/Dow (was subbed out injured)
In: Short
B: Miller Balta Vlastuin
HB: Short Brown Broad
C: Banks McAuliffe Ralphsmith
HF: Mansell Campbell Green
F: Lalor Lynch Faull
R: Nankervis Taranto Hopper
INT: Trainor Ross McIntosh Sims Trezise/Dow
Prediction:
As mentioned above, this game is not exactly one we can circle in pen as a definite win and we're going to have to play a lot better than we did against the Eagles to beat North and keep them locked into the bottom 2 so that the Death Ride continues long into the season.
