We were the best performed team in the afl home and away over that period. Our ladder positions were 2nd, 2nd, 8th, 1st, 4th. That would usually translate to two flags. Richmond was the next best over the period (three 3rds, one 1st and a 13th) and they claimed three flags. To claim we were average or below average when we were literally the best is just false.
Except I didn't claim that.

I pointed out we were above average or below average depending on the year from scores from turnover, which you claimed was our game-plan in 2016-2020.

Its good for now. But we were a turnover team in the 2016-20 period and it did not stand up in finals. We need more bows.
⤵️
No we weren't, we were yo-yoing around being above (or below) AFL average year to year.

2022 is where we were second in scores from turnover, and it worked, among other factors.
Do you actually read the posts?

For reference, in our years of finals failures (2017-2021) we were 8th, 6th, 3rd, 7th, and 11th from scores from turnover.

We were okay at it, but it wasn't our strength, and we couldn't beat Richmond who actually excelled at it, and built their dynasty off it.

2022 is where we changed the game-plan and moved up to 2nd (60 points a game off TO) when embracing a more chaotic style that actually stood up in finals.

How i look at that game , 1st half was very good , totally dominated , Geel looked good and they looked ordinary

However the 2nd half i did not like at all , particularly the last quarter , they totally dominated , played finals type football , moved the ball on quickly , and had great pace and run , and were quite impressive , where as all Geel did was chip it around and play slow motion football , and in that last qtr Geel had alot of ordinary players , and were comprensively beaten in alot of 1 on 1 contests , looking forward and at the big picture that was not impressive at all

You will take any win and that was an important 4 pts to bank , but to me there isnt much glee or excitement in the win , because after h/time the Dogs dominated and really should have won the game quite comfortably , but kept missing gettable shots - and their brand of football in the last qtr , moving the ball on at all costs was so much more impressive than Geelong

So the Cats win so thats all good , but you wouldnt be knocking over anyone in the que to get your money on to back them to win the flag after last nights game

You Just reset , and hopefully they improve as the season advances

This game had it all.... Full of iconic contrasts
Classic clash of natural adversaries Cats v Dogs

Totally contrasting game playing styles
A seesawing contest of shifting momentum
Dogs playing-on rushing forward at all costs
Cats maintaining possession controlling tempo
Dogs Dominating the contested ball in the inside
Cats Dominating the turnover on the outside
Dogs moving ball forward with slick handball
Cats running in waves and kicking long
An elite midfield v an elite forward line
A crowded forward line v an open paddock
Dogs slick teamwork v Cats solo efforts
Bailey's relentless Gut Running all game
Holmes 3 bounce run and goal from 50m
Accurate goal kicking v wasteful missed goals
Smile of lady luck v controversial umpire calls
Technology Edge Sound overruling a human
Emotional heartbreak and happiness
The recognition of indigenous people to football
Irish experiment O'Connor + Mullin bearing fruit
Bailey Smith confronting his former teammates
Tribute to a 300 game veteran Mitch Duncan
Breakout game of emerging forward Shannon Neale
The slow metamorphosis of young boys into men
Sweet taste of victory v bitterness of defeat

Were we not entertained?

That is a brilliant post

Anyone questioning that Neale ruck free kick has no idea of the rules. It's one of the most obvious free kicks you will ever see.

Also, WB got at least 2 free kicks from blocking in the ruck earlier against us. Same rule applied consistently throughout the night. No issues.

At the end of the day for the second half - with 30 seconds left in the game (and the result wrapped up) - it had been 9 goals to us, 9 goals to the Dogs. They scored off clearances and made some mistakes - we punished those mistakes and our footskills won us the game.

There's plenty to learn from and improve on. Our midfield depth is lacking at least one quality rotation. Thankfully after a quiet game Atkins stepped up in the nick of time in the last quarter.

However yesterday you also said the Giants dominated us. This was a mirror image of that game, where we scored heavily from clearances, missed lots of shots and they punished us off turnover - while finishing their work clinically.

Going 1-1 from those 2 games feels about right. The team that uses the football better wins 80% of games this year - this isn't me guessing, it's a reported fact - last night that was us. When Geelong play it's best football, that is how we win games.

A few observations.

I think if both sides play to that standard the Bulldogs win 7 out of ten times. That’s footy. Sometimes enough things don’t go your way and that’s enough to flip the result.

The 76 points from stoppages for the Bulldogs is, on the face of it, extremely worrying. It means a lot has gone wrong and a lot of other stuff has to go right. Fortunately we have the 🐐 coaching us and he is able to pull enough strings to overcome a ridiculous handicap like that.

On frees, I got to watch the replay on delay, pausing things and re-watching. We got a lot of volume of frees but except for 2-3 they were not unwarranted and I could easily find as many that weren’t paid. Simply wasn’t an unjust factor in the result. I haven’t seen anyone mention that the Dempsey mark near the boundary line happened when his opponent had a fistful of his jumper.

The forward line is fascinating. We now have a sample size of six quarters where Dangerfield’s absence made all other forwards look better. I’m not expecting them to give up on him as a forward on the back of this but it’s a close watch when he returns against the Suns.

A short comment on Neale: those that are patient will be rewarded. The negative commentary about him will look sillier and sillier from here on in.

I really want to know what "inside info" Scott was alluding to when he referred to the goal-line technology being sus
Steve Hocking of course. :D

What I'd like to know …is what was CS going on about with the EDGE tech? Is he saying its made up or not reliable or what?…. Inside information? Something he has been told by Brad or SH?

I rewatched 1st, 2nd, 3rd quarters … and there was at least 3 holding the ball against the Dogs not paid.(imo) The free kicks paid against them probably could have been higher… .. I did not think the umpring was decisive in the result. Just from scores… they really should have won…

I think we could see in the 3q we were starting to run out of legs .. I thought Stanley was influential in the first half.and clever coaching in the last to go to a control temp game to some degree.

I didn't like the game being stopped for a player to go off for a wrist injury how easy would that be as a ploy to hold up a game to kill an opposition teams momentum.
This has crept into the game in the past couple of seasons. Stopping the game should be reserved for players that are being stretchered off (or clearly will be).

It's mildly amusing seeing on other threads the cripple fight between Tiggers, Weegles and norf and see who is claiming to be ahead of who among that group. Honestly a pipe laying on the bottom of the Marianas Trench would be a higher bar than claiming to have gone ahead of norf :p :p

Wheelo's Player Ratings had the midfielders ranked as such:

1. Richards
2. Holmes
3. Kennedy
4. Smith
5. Liberatore
6. Atkins
7. Bontempelli
8. Mannagh (mid/forward hybrid)
9. Freijah
10. Mullin

That feels about right. Bont had the really hot start, but ended up with as many clangers as Smith from 10 less disposals, and 14 other players had as many or more effective kicks than him. Atkins was likely 9th until the last quarter.

We are crying out for a 3rd high quality rotation, and Atkins to move down to 4. Throwing a Kennedy or Liberatore type into our current mix would probably be enough. This year, can Stewart take up his late 2024 role to do that? Will TB be back? Do we release a fresh Dangerfield into midfield more?

As a sidenote, we had the 3 highest ranked forwards on the field - Cameron, Neale and Stengle - and this decided the game. 2024 style.

For all of the forwards success in the last seven minutes, defensive highlights:

MOC body bounce off Naughton, to clear the ball after a poor Richards kick to goal face
(Great to see him holding back and stuck to Naughton, after an earlier stuff up Stewart/SDK.)

Stewart great mark one on one midfield, when the Dogs looked goal bound.
(For all the talk, stood up when it counted)

Ted great body work, scored a decisive free kick, then outworked a dog over for kick to FWD space.
(Looked fantastic fresh, determined to make his mark, could have been on sooner)
