Bergman is absolutely worth a top 10 pick this year. 8-10 this year will be 14ish after the drafts had the eyes picked out of it
I struggle a little with this valuation, I think Bergman is in his 5th season and still only averaging 17 touches a game and 2 tackles, that’s not too 10 worthy.

Dawson had more runs on the board and went for 14, Geelong gave 17 for Smith who’s a much better player and although it’s complicated Houston who’s dual AA didn’t even get Port a top 10 pick.

What trade do you compare Bergman to as reference?

The Swans got absolutely shafted for Dawson and Adelaide refused to engage in respectful negotiations due to having the threat of the PSD on their side.

Smith is a coke head who pissed off half the bulldogs side including Bevo and was coming off an ACL.

Houston was 27 at the time and thus worth less.

This draft is also tragically weak overall and extremely compromised.

TDK compo if it falls around that 8-12 mark would be completely fair imo. Maybe a sweetener thrown in coming back to us.

If we are trading out our "stars", I'm hesitant to take picks given our long, rich history of draft pick failures. Established players that fill a need and are the right age. Thanks.
Watching the Dogs Saints tonight. God we made the right calls on offloading Carroll, Stocker and Dow. Dow hasn't gotten on the park and the other two terrible. SOS, very poor list manager. Blinded by ego.
On the flip side the Dogs a pleasure to watch. Class youngsters like Sanders and Joel Freijah carving it up. Picks 45 and 6 in 2023 draft and already there are 2, 10 year plus mids already rolling in to take over the mantle. Number of others as well.
It is negligent of SOS and Saints to waste that level of cash on a ruckman. They need talent across every line. They would be better spending that on 3 youngsters. Their list is a mess.

Firstly, have you watched this year's draft class play?

Secondly, have you watched Bergman play this year?

Id be astonished if Port asked for anything less than a pick under 15 for him this year. The most compromised and one of the weakest drafts in years.

15 could very well blow out to close to pick 25 or 30.
I have. Hes a solid player but personally think he's overated. 5th year and never averaged 20+ touches a game (this year hes going at 18 and thats his highest). Solid in a lot of areas but nothing about him says hes a player you can build your team around and thats what you want if parting with top 10 picks.

He'd be great in our side. Just not a guy Id be willing to pay up for.

We went on for years about Stocker having no tank and yet he continues to get games at AFL level.
Started seriously training after getting dumped.

Stocker gets a game for st Kilda, playing as a defender when drafted as midfielder and still isn’t very good.

Doing the pick swap with Adelaide to get Stocker will go down as one of the worst trades of all time.

We are nuts if we aren't trying to land Harley Reid.
Are we going to sit back and let the Pies get him?
We want Fritsch? Camon. How many forwards do we need that we can't kick to?
Not even Petracca?
How do you getc xcited about Fritsch ffs.

Have a go! Get in there.

What has that got to do with the conversation about Moir?
There is still a place for players with lesser endurance (provided it is a physiological deficiency rather than a commitment one - SoapyV assures us he does the work on the track).

Unfortunately there is little room in a forward line for partial passengers in the current game. Forwards have gone from “prima Donna” stay at homes to be compelled to work, hard. We currently have Charlie and Harry whether by attitude or physical impediment working at less than optimum. If we return Charlie and Harry to optimum and they are putting in defensively and up the ground, form permitting, there is a place for Moir playing mostly out of the arc. It would mean an accommodation by the coaches.

Half of this board has been salivating over conditional Fritsch who offers no more in the area of defensive workrate, more out of attitude than impediment. As long as Soapy’s suggestion is correct, I would be in favour of giving Moir senior time, initially off the bench, but certainly some structural diversity as opposed to Voss identifying roles and trying to shove players in. (Still aghast at the Kennedy reporting that he had to “earn” an inside role as per MV definition - this is largely why he was traded, as Hewett was preferred by the coaches for that allocation)

I still look back to Moir’s underage year with the sublime talent and skills. He has shown regular cameos and recently has displayed an improved workrate while not reaching the levels of Fogarty, Durdin, White, Motlop etc.

How do you know we arent?

Fritsch would be a bargain buy. Petracca and Reid would require much more capital and are much less likely to be picked up with what we have to offer

Tend to agree. He has had a few years to get into the groove of AFL life. Now you give him a run of games. Let him experience first hand senior footy. Let him sink or swim and if he sinks then it's a discussion between him and club re do you want to back to VFL and put the work in or we move you on.
Fritsch is a cream on top type recruitment when we are pressong for a flag. We have far bigger longer term list structure issues that need addressing first. At 29 before next season you would want to be getting him at seriously appropriate cost given his age and decline in output which I dont think you would. He would still demand an inappropriate price tag. A young Moir at no cost far higher longer time upside. On exposed form though bit of work to do.

I guess this exposes the crux of our list problem. By virtue of those 3 or 4 drafts being blown up. Dow etal. We are in no man's land profile wise. Do we recruit for the immediate to challenge (Fritsch) which I think the list has too many holes for, or for the rebuild on the fly ( work into Moir or the like) The direction / view Wright takes will answer these questions pretty emphatically I would think.

So if West Coast said give us Cripps for Reid would anyone do it? I wouldn't
It would be worth consideration. Wiser heads closer to them both may see merit.

You don’t trade skipper Cripps without his blessing, assuming he may embrace a return to his home state at some stage. Grew up an Eagles supporter, so may have a soft spot there. Would be huge in a rebuild for three years or so. Don’t think it would happen if we are deemed to be “in the window” though. Cripps deserves success if it is coming in his time. It is very subjective how Crippa will “age” from here. Could return to the peak of his powers if shakes off some niggles, or those niggles may become more frequent.

I have not been as big on Reid as many, but he has undoubted talent and could be a generational player. I would like to see more consistency, and seemingly better preparation, but that may be there in a more competitive environment.

Negotiation of potential steak knives would be interesting. I would happily send Gov to play a season with big brother, if he makes it through the concussion assessment, if there was a view the youngster’s longevity trumps Crippa’s value.

I thought this fella, with his wealth of football dept experience would have more of a mandate considering our current position.
It's not his job.
He should know what a good footy ops department looks like though & should be capable of appointing/developing people capable of making the right calls.

It's not irrelevant.
Yes it is, he may have more runs on the board but it doesnt make any meddling or micromanaging less problematic.
By all means engage in meaningful discussion but he has no business making captains calls.
Dont like the work done in footy ops or recruitment? Appoint people capable of fulfilling the roles to your standards aka.. his actual job.

So what if he is making changes to the footy department, like we assume.
He should hand over total responsibility to guys coming in cold and not have any opinion, despite being one of the most successful recruiters/list mangers/footy ops guys?

A lack of cash isn’t the reason they won’t be bringing in 3 youngsters. Every club would be trying to do that but it’s harder to put names to it and what draft picks you would need to get them.

I'm with him if he makes changes I want to see, but agin him if he don't.
