If they offer that much we should be asking for 2 x first rounders.

I think this could work out well for us.

They'll probably front load it and the AFL will kick in some ambassador payment too. Probably end up on $2m for the first couple of years of the deal.

I can’t see how we’ll keep Sanders. But it looks like Tassie will have to trade a number of their top picks & pre selections so we should be able to get a very good return.
If we are successful I can't see him leaving, he is a very competitive lad. He wouldn't want to be getting beaten by 10 goals every week no matter if they did double his pay check or give him unlimited midfield minutes.
I fully expect he will be entrenched in the midfield rotation come tassies inception anyway albeit shared as opposed to what the Devils could offer.

I’d be asking for more than just two - that’s what we paid for him originally. He is their number one priority, think we can get abit more out of them than that.
Depends where those first rounders sit given the first round is likely around 30 picks most years for the immediate future (this year due to academies and then more relevant due to all the picks tassie will get). I'd be wanting a pick in the top 10 and a later first round pick plus another first round pick we can activate at any point across the next 3 years tied to our lader position.

Melbourne to Tasmania is a one hour flight. I think this whole Tasmania thing is wildly overstated for the moment.

It could definitely happen, but we traded up and drafted him knowing the Tassie team was likely. I don’t think losing him is a forgone conclusion
Sanders is from a Launceston family too, so playing in Hobart is not that much more accessible to home as Melbourne is.

Wishful thinking - his family will be in his ear 24/7 about coming home on the huge dollars. Commuting time is not a factor. Its huge huge money, plus the 'tasmanian royalty' factor - remember his dad is a big deal in tassie footy.

If we spend 3 years getting him up to speed and then lose him for a slight pick upgrades on what we spent - is that good list management?

I think best case scenario, we can convince him to stick around for a few extra years while we are contending, then head back to tassie as a more mature player 25yo+ when they are more established

Treloar was one of the best players on the comp last year. One calf injury and a lot of people are writing him off. People did the same with Liber.

that might not be the big dog midfielders next year while Richards and Freija take over, but there’s def a spot in the team for them.
The idea that we’d retire Adz after giving JJ three years to get his body right just doesn’t make sense.

Adz still has his power and pace. He can play multiple roles he just needs a bit of luck. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s still got a couple of good years left in him.

If anything the midfield depth (more so Bevo's willingness to move mids around more) means Treloar will be given every chance to keep playing as long as his body is willing. He's always been a good finisher around goal but we are probably asking too much of him to have play as a small/high forward.

Good luck to Sanders if they're willing to pay him that. As long as we can get something equivalent back to what we spent to acquire him I'll be happy. Seems like a great character and wish him all the best. Money talks and it's a chance to represent his home state at their inception which I'm sure would be a tremendous source of pride for the lad.

If the AFL head honchos want him to move it'll happen. Look at how they cracked the sads when Buddy went to Swsns instead of GWS.

Call me cynical, but the competition is engineered by the unseen hands of the AFL, TV and their sponsors.

I’d be asking for 2 top 10s plus a future 2nd as a starting point. Mature bodied ball winner is exactly what Tassie need to try and be competitive asap. A lot to play out though, who knows where Sanders form is when Tassie is ready.

His father has close ties to Tassie football.

There are two key factors here. First, the emotional pull of representing your own state means something. People from bigger cities like Melbourne or Sydney might not fully get it, but for those from smaller states, there’s often a strong sense of duty. Sanders strikes me as that type, especially with his dad currently involved in Tasmania’s talent pathway program.

The second factor is financial. If Sanders were on the level of a Bont or a Daicos, you’d consider matching whatever Tassie offered. But he’s not. He’s never going to be an explosive midfielder who breaks tackles or creates overlap. You also wouldn’t compare him to someone like Matt Rowell in terms of contested ball winning either. He’s a good player, with a ceiling around a high B grader or low end A grader...not a superstar.

For us, the real upside is getting back into the top end of a heavily compromised draft like when we landed Stringer, Macrae and of course the Bont, but this time without needing to finish bottom 4.

It also helps with salary cap control. Drafting highly talented midfielders who can contribute immediately on rookie deals is far more manageable than paying top dollar for someone like Sanders, who’d be entering his peak and chasing a big contract. Free agency is going to go crazy in the next decade, having cap room and your ability to attract and retain will be just as important as drafting.

Agree with not writing him off but its 2-3 calf injuries not 1

Smoking crack is bad kids.

If only the morons in the AFL Media landscape paid to shit out this kind of commentary knew this.

Unfortunately it's too late for them. They're too deep in their addiction to shit takes.

Sanders is tracking along nicely, but if the already spluttering Tasmanian side is going to make him one of their marquee players with all that entails then the entire franchise will be DOA.

Don’t forget the umpires! 🤣

My problem is that there are way too many hypotheticals that could just plainly be not true being considered as truths.

For all we know, Sanders might not want to play for the Tassie team or maybe he is dying to join. Tassie might not want to pay Sanders that much or maybe they do.

The only facts are that Sanders is from Tassie and there may be a Tassie team.

It’s a simple story to write, but isn’t grounded in any facts.

You’re choosing to ignore the obvious pull factors for a Tassie born kid.

Buckley was full of praise for him during one of our recent games. He’s a soon to be anointed senior coach and will have significant influence over recruitment decisions... it’s clear they’ll make a serious play for him.

Is it a foregone conclusion? Of course not. But is it a live possibility? Definitely.

I'd give it a 7 out of 10 chance he's playing in myrtle green in round 1 2028.

Sanders likely won’t get midfield minutes next year too as we’ll need to find some for Bergman ;)

I may be in the minority, but I’d rather keep Sanders
