The issue is our drafting and especially trade period/ free agency
Every year you need to bring in Best 23 players from other clubs through trade and free agency. Draft correctly.
We have only bought in ELJIAH hollands who has his issues and Nick Haynes

Adelaide brings in Rankine , Dawson,
Neal Bullen , Cummings , peatling etc

Hawks bring in battle , barrass , Mabio chol,
Massimo , ginnivan , chol and Gunston back

Gold Coast have improved bringing in Rioli and noble.

Every year you need to keep bringing in ready made talent from other clubs. That can contribute to best 23.

We have done the opposite and it is costing us now.
You either keep evolving or get left behind .
Kevin Sheedy once told me many moons ago that you need to bring in 2 or 3 new best 22 players every season. As per Coach 25 points out above. 👍💙

It would an interesting exercise. List each Carlton pros/cons . Then ask someone (who does not know which position they currently play or which position they grew up playing) to place them into their most appropriate position.

e.g Hewitt - pros: strong, can read the ball, okay handballer, can tackle
Cons: poor kick, not creative, slow.

In the current game would you place him down as a mid fielder.

He has been okay this year at breaking tackles but when I look at this I think he is one of the last guys we want getting it 30 times a game. We actually need him getting it less. Carlton gets 30 opps a game through him, IMO that is not good use of those 30. We certainly cant have 90 opps a game going through Walsh, Cripps and Hewitt, the opportunity cost is too high.

e.g. JSOS pros: good footy I.Q., good field kick, desperate, good spoiler
Cons: average kick at goal, slow on the lead, gets spoiled a lot.

Why did we take so long to look at him down back and rely on him to ask for the change?

Vacant Silvagni Vacant
Sadd Weitering vacant
Vacant Cripps. Vacant
E hollands? Mckay. Williams ?
McGovern ? Curnow vacant

3 vacancies available backline realistically
2 wingman’s needed Jagga first year back?
1 forward but Williams and McGovern on big contracts could move on to clear cap especially Williams who barely plays
TDK on the move so another vacant spot
there.
E hollands career 50/50
8 spots need filling .
Back1 Leek allir
Back 2 miles bergman
Back 3 buderick/roberts/ LLYOD

Forward Ryan , Rosa’s , draft pick 2025
Ruck O’Brien
Florent and LLyod both not consistently in swans 23 could be cheap

I'm all in for change, the question is how much ?
Iv not wanted to change coaches up til now, with the example of Hardwick and Goodwin as stability and perseverance, and we had changed too many times already, but if Longmire is available and wants the job I'd be open to it, I'm just not sure if that's the answer
The list needs some changes, and some of the bigger names would give us some ability to reorganise our deficits, I think tdk needs to go, and I think his lack of a signature is unsettling for the group (got shoved into the fence and only o hollands did anything) and I'd trade Walsh as his best skill set is mostly a hard running mid, not disposal, x factor, or contest
If Charlie is that uninterested as his last performerance in the navy blue maybe he can go as well. Would give us 5 first rounders, trade some missing pieces, a dynamic hbf, x factor small forward, draft some talent and academy kids and to be honest, would be a better balanced team next year, even without a few stars
I'd keep McKay as he rucks, chases, tackles, and gets up the ground
McKay, McGovern and Kemp as the primary targets, HOK and Lemmey coming through next year
It's an average situation for the blues at the moment, so much investment and we seem all at sea as a club
Sorry for the down vibes

We need difference makers and genuine competition for spots, not 'help'. A lot of the players mentioned will be too expensive for us and will just get sucked into the system. I don't care if we end up being even more crap for a few years, maybe we need to be crap in the short term.

Correct, not what we need at all.
Just being available is enough for some.
Counting down the days now till the annual Fiorini calls start to appear 🤦‍♂️
Yeah we need to be starting off looking for a lot better players than florent imo
Gotta aim at the top and work from there. We may not jag anything, but should be shaking the tree big time

Libba, Ward and Danger have all had much better help throughout their careers to assist with the battering they received.

I really struggle to think of another star midfielder that's had to do so much of the heavy lifting himself as what Crippa has had to do.
Chris Judd after joining Carlton.

He definitely had a long career well into his 30s and certainly didn't retire young iirc.

100%. See Nat Fyfe, not Pendles. I still think Crippa has plenty of good football in him, but he’s played a highly physical brand for more than a decade and it adds up eventually.
In 3 years, I’m hoping we do what the cats have done with Dangerfield (or did with Ablett jr) and play him mainly as a forward who gets a couple of runs on the ball each quarter.
I suggested I'd love to see him work on his contested marking in the off-season to play more forward/as a target as opposed to need to follow the ball everywhere. For a 195cm man he's a fairly poor contested mark, if he could get to even decent standard it could extend his career.

When I suggested that I got told we should just leave one of the greatest inside mids of the modern game as an inside mid. Funny what difference a few weeks makes.

lol I can't access the article, I hope he's mentioning giving us Sydney's first round pick as well. If not the article must be a scam lol

Given the incredibly moronic trade suggestion, are you sure you even want access to the article? Talk about a brain cell killer.

Would be worth a third rounder I reckon.

Or Harry McKay according to the June 23rd 2025’s dumbest member of the media. Let’s see what tomorrow’s candidate adds to the trade on Carlton’s side.

Of those with exposed AFL form, I'd say the following are all D graders who could become C graders but more likely will continue to perform at below average levels -
Fogarty
Fantasia
Durdin
Binns
L Young
White
Evans

Those on the cusp of joining them -
Motlop
Acres
Docherty
Pittonet
Carroll
Moir
Boyd

That's more than a quarter of the list, not including all the guys in the VFL who are yet to be proved AFL quality ...

I can't see the logic in trading out Harry unless there are issues beyond what we already know.
If we were to cash in on any of our 'stars', Charlie would be the most dispensable.

BTW

your avatar always trips me up ;)
Love the Doull.

I would rather we keep Harry as well.

Let’s not overstate Harry McKay’s absence, it wouldn’t leave an unfillable gap.

Statistically, our forward line ranks among the league’s worst for converting inside 50s into scores.

The McKay/Curnow combination has rarely delivered consistent results, and the modern game demands a more diverse set of scoring options rather than relying on two $1M+ key forwards.

In reality, someone like Tim Membrey, who was available as a delisted free agent, would have offered Carlton a greater output in 2025.
I find Harry has a greater impact on (puts in more effort) our team than Charlie does, so if we were to lose one i would rather it not be Harry.

The McKay/Curnow combination has rarely delivered consistent results,
This is a strange take on a combination that has delivered over 100 goals for the past 3 years. Every team would kill for a combination like this. IMO, any talk of trading one of the is madness. If one leaves and dominates elsewhere can you imagine the reaction.
