AFL exploring new mid-season tournament for cash prize

Seems like such an unnecessary bunch of ideas from AFL Head Office (if it's all true)
I agree with a few other posters - seems like an idea that some overpaid executives came up with to justify their job.

if the AFL is hell bent on basically resurrecting the night series (Escort, Fosters, Panasonic Cup era), would it be of more interest to a supporter base if they conducted it as a youth league style competition? Say an U23s, whose club has the best kids is a constant topic of debate, would feed into this neatly enough.
U23’s? - Collingwood would just forfeit - inability to fields a team.

There would be no need for reheating state of origin or new gimmicks like this is the AFL was more benevolent and less malevolent in its fixturing. Focus on maximising crowds and TV audiences. Even stopping games overlapping or concurrent games would provide the aggregate audience boost that that even a best-case scenario for this tournament would offer. The gains to be made aren't even marginal they're massive.

For too long the AFL has used the fixture to reinforce its authority over outspoken clubs and presidents or principle-over-people matters like forcing the bigger clubs into Docklands when the MCG was either free or hosted smaller games. Gimmicks and the discourse around them are easy, fixturing is hard. But the AFL stands to benefit from either so why not put the work in?

"What if...multiball third quarters?" [Snort].
Great.

Thanks for planting the seed.

I can see the AFL float this in coming months. 3 balls in play for the third quarter. You could have two reds and a yellow which is double points.

Obviously extra points for a goal outside 50.

Spectators and cameras won’t know where to look. You can already hear the excited squeals coming from BT and Derwayne.

As if the game hasn’t been compromised enough.

If it’s done right, which is a big if, I don’t hate the idea. It would add something for teams not in the premiership window to strive for, could add something excitement.
Did you find it exciting when your team won the NAB cup?

Do you rejoice the years when your team was a NAB cup champion (even if your team ultimately finished 10th in the H&A season)?

Very much in favour of having an 18 game season.

Willing to reserve thoughts on this proposed idea as a way of changing the season.
They are never going to do that lol.

This is the same league that essentially banned teams from playing pre-season games, so they could add another round to the regular season to increase ticket sales; force Geelong to play home games against big drawing teams at the MCG where they're home ground advantage is less; and force the #1 ranked team to play the GF at an away venue that sometimes happens to be the home ground of the lesser ranked team (as in the case of 2017 GF with Adelaide vs Richmond), all so they can play the game at the largest capacity venue, which allows for even more ticket sales (this time the exorbitantly priced GF ones).

There is not a chance the AFL will ever be decreasing the length of the season, the only thing they will ever be doing is looking to expand it, which has recently been made obvious by them detailing their plans to essentially add another round: Wildcard week

Most people responding in this thread have no idea. The proposal would be similar to the NBA Cup in that the tournament games would be incorporated as part of the 23 game schedule (with the exception of the final, presumably). If they can make it work in the fixture, there is really only upside as it has no effect on the number of games.

There is not enough success in the AFL industry. There is one trophy to win with 18 (soon to be 19) teams and the reality is some of the supporters in this very thread will never see their team win anything for the rest of their lives, which is what happens when you have one trophy for 19 teams, and NOTHING else to win.

English Soccer has the league premiership title for finishing on top (the equivalent to winning the Grand Final in the AFL), yet they also have the FA Cup, the League Cup (which is a separate Cup competition for the professional clubs), the Champions League and Europa League. That's FIVE trophies available with clubs able to win up to 4 of them in any season. The FA Cup and League Cups gives a great chance for clubs not in contention for the premiership to win something.

Now for years, I've been on about giving more recognition to the minor premier. I would do the following:

  • Give the minor-premiership a different name (Barassi Cup or something)
  • Give all 40 players on the list of the winning club $50,000 each for a total cost of 2 million
  • give the winning club $2 million (total cost 4 million when added to the players prize)
  • award the trophy on the field after the game in which top sport is sealed.

The NBA gives the winning players of the NBA Cup $500,000 each.

A Cup competition incorporated into the AFL regular season games (so as to not increase the amount of games) would be another good incentive for the players with a similar large cash payment to the winning team and players without adding games to the schedule.

There is simply not enough success in the industry. Remember, not every trophy to be won, has to be as prestigious as the Grand Final. There are tiers of prestige. Just like in English Soccer. Some trophies are more important than others and that's fine, but there should more than just the one trophy to win in the AFL. There is simply not enough success or reward for the loyalty of fans in the industry and we need a second (or even third) trophy to add more success to the industry. If that can be done without increasing the amount of games, then it should absolutely be considered.

Would you rather win the NBA Cup or not win it? Obviously you'd rather win it. Just because it's secndary in importance to the main NBA title doesn't mean you don't strive to win it. The FA Cup is not as prestigious as winning the league title, but you still want to win it. The NBA Cup doesn't add games to the schedule, so the preference is to win it. It's not like it's an either/or situation as if there is some sort of choice for winning either the NBA Cup or the main NBA title. You are ALLOWED to win both. Hell, if you win the NBA Cup, you then become the only team who can win two trophies. One doesn't compromise the other.

Would you rather win the first minor trophy (the NBA Cup) and therefore still be able to win the main title and win two trophies?

Or would you rather not win the NBA Cup and therefore you can only win the main NBA title?

Obviously the former. It's not either/or. You are allowed to win both.

Bad luck. It's like the world cup in soccer which was 32 but now going to be 48 countries involved. The rarity of it makes it great and in the case of soccer it's once every 4 years.

The only people who whine about the double ups are supporters who think it's the reason they missed finals or top 4 and x team only won a flag because of it.

If you are good enough you will win more times than not against the good opposition.

And its generally Collingwood supporters who like the "draw" because they tend to get the easiest ride.

Dunstall rightly turning up his nose at all this tinkering nonsense (and the gvp)
