I'm not trying to say that because Jack Graham said whatever he said it will cause violent attacks off the field, it's about setting the standard in society that it's not ok to target gay people.
It’s not but doing things like this only create more division imo.

See this thread and every other social media post about it today.

People from all walks of life get unfairly targeted every day but putting some on a pedestal above others creates worse problems

Also why the **** do the AFL do this shit on the bloody morning of the game. Should have been done on Friday or waited till Monday to do so.

So you’re…pro threatening someone’s life?

Also the AFL isn’t society. It’s a workplace.

Go call your boss a campaigner and threaten to bash them, then shit on their desk. See if the free speech defence lets you keep your job.

First thing I always start with is my admiration for workplace employee conditions, just to get that off my chest about my moral standard. Print it out and give everyone a copy.

Then I explain how I admire that you can become a drug addict, and you get 3 chances (and those are only counted only if you get caught). You can wave your drugs around in your CEOs office and nothing happens to you.

I mean it must be right because it's a workplace and therefore everything is OK. no need to think for yourself.

May have become public today but the club clearly knew it was happening. Took the extra emergency and flew Gross over later as well

Sounds like he didn’t inform the club until Friday.

I have no idea what this means and I’m not certain you do either.

The AFL routinely gets things wrong. Doesn’t mean that you could go into work tomorrow and abuse your boss then play the free speech card if they wanted to can you.

Sheesh, go away and have breakfast, come back later and the whole thread has changed!? At least it moved on from TK-contract-$$$ talk.
4 weeks! That's totally disproportionate and over the top reaction.

Agree it shouldn't happen, and gone are the days of 'I f**d your mother and r*ped your sister' and all that testosteroned-fuelled moronic abuse, let alone racist comments of any kind. It's not 'woke' to clamp down on this stuff, it's education for lazy minded less evolved individuals...(and Trump and his band of cretinous clowns are nothing to look up to)

Meanwhile Jack will be a big loss of grunt and really damages our chances of a flag now?
Well, it makes us lopsided and affects our chances of seeing how the game plan improvement stacks up against other sides in the remaining games. But others get a chance and we can stagger on watching the young ones grow their craft.

Huge stretch to think the AFL suspended Graham for 4 weeks because of possible links to violent attacks off field - when they gave a limp wrist punishment to the bloke actually threatening violent attacks.

I think it's logically consistent to agree with harsh penalties for homophobic slurs while also thinking the violent threats sent out by Willie Rioli (and others in the future) should also cop harsh penalties and that the AFL was too lenient in the latter.

Remember kids, calling someone a mean word once is four times worse than threatening people with physical violence on multiple occasions

So I'm gathering calling a players mum a wh*** is not on or slipping her the old Italian sausage the night before?

And nor are any comments on players holding onto some extra lard?

You think calling someone a homophobic slur and calling someone a ginger is comparable?

Yes.

It elicits the exact same negative emotions, does it not?

Perhaps people should think about how the words they use to describe everyone affects them, not just who they're told to think about.

I think the solution to that is lifting the penalty for threatening someone’s life, not culling the penalty for other incidents.

That's fair.

The AFL have said they want this stamped out and have acted accordingly on the Finlayson, Powell, and now Graham bans. It’s still happening too often, so I don’t expect them to soften their stance.

Again, I think the punishment for an initial offence is too harsh but I guess based off precedent, they're stuck with this as a baseline now, so be it.

Reminds me of this from the president of FIFA:

“Today I feel Qatari,” he said. “Today I feel Arabic. Today I feel African. Today I feel gay. Today I feel disabled. Today I feel [like] a migrant worker.”

He added: “Of course I am not Qatari, I am not an Arab, I am not African, I am not gay, I am not disabled. But I feel like it, because I know what it means to be discriminated [against], to be bullied, as a foreigner in a foreign country. As a child I was bullied – because I had red hair and freckles, plus I was Italian, so imagine.”

If having red hair ever stopped you getting a job, got you beaten up (or even murdered) or denied marriage to another consenting adult, get back to me. It's quite demeaning comparing your experience to those having to deal with racist and homophobic insults.

The biggest issue is that the now the AFL is involved in banning for social matters - is how it is weighting different crimes.

Suspending Graham for four weeks and is fair and reasonable and in line with other punishments given to players for the same offence - but not in line with the non punishment given to Alastair Clarkson for the same slurs. Why? Probably because the AFL didn't want to suspend Clarkson because of the impact on North which is ridiculous - the same crime should have the same punishment.

The AFL now finds itself in the position where it thinks verbal slurs are worse than threatening violence. That is a position at odds with the values of many people.

All in all the AFL has no credibility on social issues - why is Clarkson saying slurs not worthy of a suspension?
Because of the impact to North.
Why did Willie Rioli get a minor punishment? Because the AFL didn't want anything at all to do with that case which is why we had the farce where we had to pretend Geelong didn't report to the AFL.

The AFL's punishment is driven by wanting to look good and not because of any sincere desire to fix anything. Graham, Finlayson etc get punished because the AFL loses nothing by punishing them, Clarkson would actually impact things so doesnt get punished.

Willie gets off scott free while we have to endure the AFL and the entire AFL media pretending that the Collingwood support actually made death threats to Michael Voss.

Has it gotten my physically assaulted and slandered?

Yes, it has actually.

So why are you minimizing my life's experiences based on my appearance whilst raising others?

This is the exact issue I am bringing up

How would everyone feel about saying the Jack Graham situation discussion can continue on until subs are named, and at that point there’s probably nothing more to add and we can get back to the game day thread?

(JWill being a bad replacement for Graham chat may continue, play Tom Gross you plebs).

my apologies, I didn't realise all this was about workplace rights. I may need to go and speak to Darling on how to go about it.

graham should have just taken sick leave.

Oooooooohhhhh, it’s a cooker ‘I never got over Covid’ thing.

Say no more, my friend.

Jesus f*cken christ guys, how many pages of the gameday thread do we want to devote to "calling people slurs is [fine/bad]"?

Graham used a slur that the AFL have decided warrants a suspension. They also deem that not all slurs are equal. Graham was therefore suspended for using a slur that the AFL deems ban-worthy (and based on precedent is probably lucky he didnt get a longer sentence).

Move the f*ck on. Its a footy board.
