St Kilda complain about priority draft access in Oct 2024; now set to gain priority access to a first / second round pick via their NGA access

Unlike the Saints the Swans constantly hit late in the draft and even rookie draft. They always have a random player I’ve never heard of come into the best 22 and be a gun.
They've hit some late picks for sure

but Marshall, Wilkie and Sinclair?? all Rookie picks

Furthermore: Sharman, Camaniti, Hall, mid-season/ SPP

You know what also helps?

Getting Heeny at pick 2 in the year played in a GF
Mills at pick 4 when they finished 4th
being able to manipulate picks again, Blakey at pick 10

Just had a look at the July draft rankings,

still no St Kilda NGA kid in the top 30

Suns have 3
Brisbane - 1
Sydney - 2
Dons - 2
Carlton - 1
Pies - 1
Freo - 1

11 of the top 30 so far tied to Clubs, and an expected 26 of ~60 picks used in the national draft, are already tied to clubs

Do you think if st Kilda had benefited from the system they’d be complaining and carrying on like they are now?

What academy talent that is on the lions list would you like to have on the saints list if it was open to all?

Unlike the saint’s I take it you know absolutely nothing about our drafting history then ? We have a much better track record with late picks and rookie drafts than we do with early picks, Milne , Montagna rowan marshal cal Wilkie cooper Sharman max hall just to name a few

Hipwood, , fletcher, andrews

Fletcher is a father son.

Andrews was a project player pick 60, would not be in the AFL if there wasn’t an academy.

Hipwood is a who knows. Might have been a late project pick without the academy.

You asked me to list players that st Kilda would take I didn’t say anything about would they be playing football or not without an academy. Andrew’s and hipwood would be pretty handy in our team at the moment

Andrews was bid on in the 2nd round but because of the rules that year, you were able to match with your next available pick.

I said academy talent and one of the three you chose is a father son.

I then responded to your list to explain why academies are important, you see old boy. Just part of an ongoing discussion about the wonders of the academies

Hipwood and Andrew’s are not really the body types for nrl or union hipwood probably a basketball athlete a fair chance both would be still playing afl without academy’s though

What about the previous post where you claimed Sydney and not St Kilda has found gems late in the draft? Care to respond?

as for this question, who said it's about the Lions' talent that we want? I don't profess to be a draft guru, but if Annable or Patterson( GCS) were available, they would suit us, Would WCE or Tigers like Uwland or King

last year, we missed out by 1 pick in getting one of the top-rated mids, which included a F/S and Academy pick before us. I don't know who we rated out of those mids, but it's a choice we didn't have.

4 of this year's top 10 could easily be Academy kids, if you can't see how limits clubs' choices or impacts on decisions......

I shoot from the hip, sometimes I miss. I don't know nor do I care to learn about St Kilda's list.

I didn't say you want the Lions talent. I'm just asking a question, the fact that Fred Bassat keeps bringing up Brisbane suggests you like our talent!

Potted is a little strong - might say he aired that he disagreed:

“It’s one that I don’t see as having a place in the contemporary game, albeit understanding it’s lovely from a historical perspective and the culture of the game. I get that. But it just doesn’t feel right to me.”

That said, I’ve probably come around. I have always liked it before during and after the Ashcrofts/Fletcher bounty, but it probably should be nerfed significantly. I still think there’s room for it, I do love the romance of it, but I’d support something along the lines of:

  • if top 10, requiring at least 1 pick within 5 places being used, otherwise, within 10 places
  • 0% discount
  • 200 game threshold
  • one club player

I think most would hopefully agree this would make it not only quite rare, but would result in a reasonably fair price being paid (especially considering the change in draft index). It still gives the “father” club an opportunity to get them, if they are motivated enough.

And I am absolutely well aware it might come across as rich of me to suggest these changes immediately after we’ve benefitted, and that these changes could potentially affect Carlton and Hawthorn in the immediate term. Just spit ballin’.

The pick within X places stuff is also where I see academies going, but not for quite few years yet.

It’s been indefensible since Hawkins got drafted as a F/S over 20 years ago.

Good to see the Freo CEO come out and pot the Father/Son setup as well.

Hopefully drives change across the board sooner rather than later.
Incoming Footy GM Greg Swann said tonight that the father-son rule won't be changing unless all 18 clubs want it gone, which will never happen. He also said the northern academies won't be going away and that they will trial several years of drafts under the new points system before potentially considering any further changes.

Hipwood and Andrew’s are not really the body types for nrl or union hipwood probably a basketball athlete a fair chance both would be still playing afl without academy’s though
Hipwood was actually a really talented cricketer and became known for his fast bowling within Cricket Queensland circles. He only returned to footy at 13 when he was placed in the Lions Academy. There's every chance he goes on to become a fast bowler if it wasn't for the Lions Academy.

Why wouldn’t they, the position has been consistent ?.

Upsetting for you I know.

Did you watch the game tonight? How good were the Ashcroft duo! Pretty incredible talent ID by our recruiters, the fact that they slid to a bundle of picks in the 40s was the cherry on top!

Are you going to debate any of what I suggested or just stick with absolutism?

I think those changes would make it fair while maintaining the romance/nostalgia. E.g. Walker next year gets bid on at 1 - Carlton have to prepare by trading up to any of the following:

  • 6 & 9
  • 6, 18, & 28
  • 6, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41
  • 6, and picks 42 to 54

It leaves them with enough flexibility to do it, but a genuine price to pay.

You need to accept the AFL are clearly not in favour of removal. You can dig in and say you don’t like it as much as you want, but perhaps debate what middle ground short of “make them pay twelve first-rounders” you’re willing to accept. Again, I mostly agree that it should be rid of, I just don’t see it happening.
