St Kilda complain about priority draft access in Oct 2024; now set to gain priority access to a first / second round pick via their NGA access

Did you watch the game tonight? How good were the Ashcroft duo! Pretty incredible talent ID by our recruiters, the fact that they slid to a bundle of picks in the 40s was the cherry on top!
There great players no doubt just imagine if the clubs that finished bottom 4 those seasons actually had access to pick the talent they should have been allowed to pick

Are you going to debate any of what I suggested or just stick with absolutism?

I think those changes would make it fair while maintaining the romance/nostalgia. E.g. Walker next year gets bid on at 1 - Carlton have to prepare by trading up to any of the following:

  • 6 & 9
  • 6, 18, & 28
  • 6, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41
  • 6, and picks 42 to 54

It leaves them with enough flexibility to do it, but a genuine price to pay.

You need to accept the AFL are clearly not in favour of removal. You can dig in and say you don’t like it as much as you want, but perhaps debate what middle ground short of “make them pay twelve first-rounders” you’re willing to accept. Again, I mostly agree that it should be rid of, I just don’t see it happening.
It’s a fairer system but still doesn’t go anywhere near far enough . I said it plenty of times the teams that finish bottom 4 are most in need of talent, there should be no matching bids in the first 4 these should be uncompromised picks, after that go to a system like you mention, Darcy Ashcroft and players of this talent should have been available to the clubs that needed them most

I wouldn’t be in favour of the player being rated at 4 being somewhat arbitrarily unavailable as a father son compared to one rated at 5, but agree bottom sides need access. Part of me says okay, restrict it to the true dregs, the bottom 2.

But then looking at cases, is North getting Sheezel really holding them back, in comparison to getting Ashcroft? Or the Giants “having to take” Callaghan instead of Darcy? With Darcy and Daicos gone, the GC ended up with Mac Andrew.

These suggest bottom sides can still access top talent, imo.

Good players were still available at those picks but Darcy and daicos are generational talents on another level that would have been game changers for the clubs on the bottom,

4:00 Certainly doesn't sound like Swann is keen on anything more than the odd tweak to F/S and academies. New system for academies and is keen to let that play out and see how it goes. Understands academies are needed but price needs to be a little higher. Says most clubs are in favour of F/S.

I tried to imagine but couldn’t.

I imagined it and sadly the loser clubs were still shit. :(
go the other way, imagine Sydney without Heeny Mills, Blakey, Goulden, Campbell, and another top 5-15 kid this year

Yeah but I was watching the Lions - Wallabies game tonight and was just thinking how good they would have been playing Union because they might have horrifically been forced to play footy in Victoria ?.

Imagine the horror

You know how the old saying goes, better to be in a Russian labour camp in Siberia than playing for St Kilda.

Rarely has a FS or Academy player been the standout best number 1 or 2 pick.

Even with Nick Daicos, North had no issue as they felt JHF was the best in the draft.

Jamara was considered the best and Adelaide bid on him. I’m sure Tilthorpe at number 2 was a very close second.

Where this is more of an issue is a club having multiple FS, NGA or Academy picks in the 1st round. The solution to this is to limit clubs matching only on 1 player per round and having a pick in that round to match as part of the match.

Ahh geez, there’s not a new League club in Siberia now that’s going to take all the Northern talent is there?!

Why don’t the Saints propose they start an academy there. Sad!

As I said, much easier to do when the AFL prop up their franchises.
hahahaha is that the reason for 20+ years of mediocrity? so embarassing, I actually feel bad for supporters like you that thats there default for your clubs own problems, created the most disgraceful drugs saga in the history of Australian sport but must be afl "franchises" fault hahahahahahah

Worked out beautifully for them.

This sort of restriction will probably come in at some point (1 per round). Though not for some time, I think.

Having to have a pick in the same round to match is easily rorted - didn’t we used to have a similar system? Heeney? E.g. player touted as a top 5 pick, clubs could just trade for pick 18 and call it a day - too big a discount.

Something like “a pick in the same round, plus picks to make up the rest of the difference” would be fairer. Or the similar “pick within X places” which has been thrown up a few times on here.

Does adding more hahas make you feel like you are making a better point? You are fixating on an issue that has nothing to do with the argument, so keep laughing if it makes you feel better while completely missing the point.

Has nothing to do with the bombers woes. There are 14 teams in the AFL that dont operate as an afl franchise and get the free hits that the northern clubs do. It's not like Brisbane don't have the father son rule to tap into. North were ripped off by the AFL in having Blakey as an academy and not a father son. The academy that is to grow the game and put kids on an AFL pathway from an early age shouldn't apply to the son of a former player.
