Let’s call Round 19 Statement Round. Hard to remember a round where so many contenders put their claims forward! Let’s wrap it up…
Bombers v Giants, Thursday night: What on earth is the point of a floating fixture if THIS is the best they can come up with for a Thursday night? Meanwhile genuine top 8 encounters get shunted off to the Sunday twilight timeslots. What a marvelous administration we have. Anyway, the Bombers cost themselves any remote chance of an upset by starting this one with 8 consecutive behinds. The Giants on the other hand have hit the ground running after their bye with three straight wins. Massive derby in Sydney next week against a resurgent Swans outfit.
Lions v Dogs, Friday night: All the discussion out of this will be that the Doggies failed to beat a top 8 opponent again. I’m going to take a slightly different angle and declare that the Lions are the best team going round. If I had to pick one side I don’t want to play in September it ain’t Collingwood, it’s Brisbane (although the Crows are closing quickly). Their midfield is crazy good and bats deeper than anybody. They can win games in a withering burst or they can win in a slog like they did in this one. Fair play to the Bulldogs for nearly pinching it from them late.
Hawks v Port, Saturday arvo: In pristine Tassie conditions with no roof in sight, the Hawks brushed Port aside and put forward their own claims to be in the premiership discussion. Port were actually hanging with them until three quarter time but Hawthorn had an extra gear and a howling gale in the final term which saw them boot clear. Nice goal late in the game from the aeroplane Jack Ginnivan, and to be fair it was a classy chuckling response from Ken too.
Isaac Heeney v North, Saturday twilight: North were actually the better team all day against 21 Sydney players plus the sub. The trouble was the 22nd player turned up in runaway freight train mode and simply couldn’t be stopped. Seriously what on earth was that?? You only rack up 13 clearances, five goals and a million possessions if you’re playing in the under 9s and you’re the only kid who’s lucky enough to have had a growth spurt. But in the AFL? Does not happen.
Blues v Demons, Saturday night: Finally some respite for long suffering Blues fans. Yes it was close, yes it was ugly, but I reckon the folks that braved a miserable winter’s night would have been glad just to sing the song and see some positive signs from a few of the kids. Pretty ordinary stuff from the Dees all night but Kozzy Pickett’s game was a highlight.
Eagles v Tigers, Saturday night: Not much to be said about the turnover merchants in West Coast, so how about we raise a glass to the victors who weren’t supposed to win a game all year? They’ve now won five. Still got a chance to win one or two more in the run home too. Their youngsters have really shown something, and their veterans have done very well to hold the show together. Oh and Maurice Rioli? Rundown tackle of the century!
Cats v Saints, Sunday arvo: Bear in mind that the Saints usually beat the Cats for fun, so this wasn’t the lay-down misere that it looked on paper. Geelong led all afternoon though, and even though the Saints drew close here and there, they never really looked likely to threaten.
Pies v Dockers, Sunday arvo: WOW. These two played out a Sunday afternoon gem! Just as the Pies looked like they were starting to run away with it early in the final term, the Dockers found something and pulled off a famous win!! This is a much steelier Fremantle outfit than some of their teams of the past. That win puts them equal fourth with a world of possibility in front of them now.
Crows v Suns, Sunday twilight: That is a big time statement from the Crows. The Suns turned up having claimed a big scalp last week, but the home side casually (yet brutally) cast them aside. There were eleven Adelaide goals on the board before Gold Coast kicked one of their own… and that wasn’t until the third quarter! Crazy. Form team of the comp alongside the Lions.
