Best players

Corey Warner, Caiden Cleary, Taylor Adams, Jesse Dattoli, Riley Bice

The Sydney Swans have held off a fast-finishing GIANTS outfit to record a hard-fought 14.15.(99) to 11.5.(71) victory at ENGIE Stadium on Friday night.

The Swans had a contingent of AFL experience helping in the win, with Peter Ladhams, Riley Bice, Robbie Fox and Taylor Adams all featuring in the victory.

Caiden Cleary impressed with 28 disposals and Corey Warner finished with 27 and a goal, while Dattoli kicked three goals for the second consecutive game, including a clean shot from 50m in the final term to all but seal the win.

It was goals galore in the opening term, with Green and Dattoli recording first Blood for the red and white, before Warner joined the scoresheet with a major of his own.

QBE Sydney Swans Academy talent Max King also made his presence felt with two goals in the first quarter, including one from 55m that sparked the red and white to a 20-point lead at the break

Hanily extended the lead early in the second quarter after the GiANTS gave away a 50m penalty, extending the lead to four goals.

Ladhams, who made his return to the VFL, lead with some elite tackle pressure and finished the first half with six tackles to go with his lone first-half goals.

Cleary and Warner, who were coming off impressive performances from the side's win over North Melbourne, were again at the forefront of the Swans strong start - finishing the opening half with 15 and 18 disposals respectively.

The Swans dominant first-half display saw them hold a healthy 35-point lead at the main break, with Ladhams providing plenty of grunt up forward and Riley Bice featuring prominently off halfback.

The GiANTS showed they wouldn't go down without a fight in the third quarter, kicking two goals midway through the term to keep the red and white on their toes.

The Swans were made to rue their kicking in the second-half, with six consecutive behinds a cause for concern as the GIANTS managed to reduce the deficit to 23 points.

The final quarter saw some resilient defence from the Bloods come to the fore, although some relentless attacking raids saw the GIANTS make it a close contest in the dying stages.

Now that our season is over, hopefully we see a bit of a refresh of the AFL and VFL teams.

From the next generation, I'd like to see Corey, Bice, Cleary, Dattoli, and Snell given regular games in the run home. Hanily and Bowman might be next season but if they can fire up for a couple of games then they should at least be looked at. Maybe even Mitchell though I'm not convinced he's at the level, it would be good to see him at least get a proper chance. Green probably isn't ready, but he's improving from what I've seen, and we've got West Coast as the last game of the season.

From the fringe guys playing for a new contract/improved trade terms, Ladhams, Florent, and Fox all deserve another crack. I wouldn't mind seeing Ladhams earn another contract. Florent might just be improving his trade value but if we hold onto him then we have better depth. Fox is probably a bit past it but on a minimum contract he's good depth.

McLean and Hamling are already out obviously, while Rampe, Campbell, Roberts, Cunningham, and McInerney could probably all use a bit of a kick up the bum. Gulden and Papley appear to be playing hurt and could use some rest.

I'm not saying we should go 7 out and 7 in every week, but just start cycling some players through so that over the last 4 weeks everybody gets a 2 week run in the AFL to prove themselves, and a 2 week run in the VFL or a rest to refrest and reset. If blokes need surgery, send em in to get it done now.

Then when preseason starts, everybody knows that all spots in the 23 are up for grabs and they need to prove themselves afresh.

Exactly what I thought. 17 disposals, 5 marks (mostly contested), 7 tackles, 13 hit outs, 2 goals and 2nd in the ratings points for the Swans. What else does he have to do?
Not have a "behind assist"? In addition to his undoubted contribution to the result, he - as is his way - provided more than his share of entertainment value too, supported by the commentators' recognition of his eccentricities.

'Around the state leagues' summary:

Taylor Adams
made a successful return from a hamstring injury as Academy prospect Max King showed his wares in a strong win over the Giants.

Adams, who has featured in just four AFL games this season, put in a solid performance with 21 disposals, six marks and five clearances as he looks to work his way back into senior football.

Caiden Cleary impressed with 28 disposals and Corey Warner gathered 27 touches, six tackles and a goal in a dominant game.

First-year forward Jesse Dattoli booted three goals for the second consecutive match.

Out-of-favour midfielder Ollie Florent had 21 disposals to go with eight tackles and eight clearances, while Riley Bice (25 disposals) and Robbie Fox (19) were also strong contributors to the victory.

Peter Ladhams responded to his axing with two goals, 17 disposals and 13 hitouts, and Ben Paton (25), Tom Hanily (15 and one goal), Caleb Mitchell (14) and son of a gun Indhi Kirk (14) all played well.

Key forward King - who is ranked 14th in this month's edition of Cal Twomey's Phantom Form Guide - kicked two goals from 10 disposals in a promising showing ahead of November's Telstra AFL Draft.

ROUND 18 RECAP

GWS GIANTS 3.1 5.1 8.4 11.5 (71)
SYDNEY SWANS 6.3 10.6 10.13 14.15 (99)

The Sydney Swans picked up consecutive wins for the first time in 2025, and they did it in style, upsetting crosstown rivals the GWS Giants by 28 points at ENGIE Stadium on Friday evening.

A week after overcoming a 37-point deficit to stun North Melbourne, the Swans put a major dent in the Giants’ top-four hopes with a convincing win in enemy territory.

Six opening quarter goals helped set up a 35-point half time lead for the Swans, before a 0.7 third term allowed the Giants to move within 21 points at the final change.

The home side did get as close as 16 points halfway through the last quarter on the back of three consecutive goals, however, the visitors held their nerve to kick away late.

Emerging young forward Jesse Dattoli sealed the victory with his third goal of the night. It was the second game in a row last year’s No. 22 Draft pick has booted three majors.

Caiden Cleary and Corey Warner each had plenty of the footy for Sydney, racking up 28 disposals apiece. Veteran midfielder Taylor Adams made a successful return from a hamstring injury in his first VFL game since Round 8, finishing with 21 touches and five clearances.

Giants forward Max Gruzewski didn’t have any issues finding the big sticks despite his team’s loss, booting an equal season-high of five majors. The young gun now has 42 goals in 14 appearances to sit in fifth place on the goal kicking table.

I will throw up on myself if Caiden Cleary does not play senior footy this week.

Like Dattoli, Snell, Hanily etc. I'm also hyped about, and I would be fine with literally any of them playing/debuting this week, but Cleary is a must IMO. He is just too good for the VFL and our AFL side - midfield particularly - not good enough for Cleary to not get an opportunity.

Unless JUH is in the bag, we really should be talking to ard Max Gruzewski about coming across.

Didn't Hamling twang a hammy?

Cleary did some absolutely brilliant stuff in close in that game and this has been his main strength. His weaknesses reveal themselves when he is in the wide open spaces and distributing. But he seems to have improved recently in this area.
