I do watch him closely live. And no I still disagree. Getting caught out on a lead in space is just as much on the pressure up the ground as it is on the KPD.Watch him closely live. You'll understand. It's his direct opponent that constantly gets away from him.
He's literally been tagged on multiple occasions this season because opposition coaches know how impactful he is.Just part of modern zone defensive schemes. I agree that Weiters gets caught out on occasion but he's by a mile the best KPD option we've got and it's up to the team ahead of him to slow the ball movement of the opposition to give him time to impact and get across to assist the others.
He also gets blocked prolifically by opposition players and gets little assistance from his teammates in that regard.
He's not a lockdown defender at all. This a myth. A lockdown defender stays close to his opponent. Weitering doesn't do this what so ever. Weitering is good when the ball is kicked long to a pack and he can intercept. Clubs have worked him out and play through his direct opponent. As to losing some weight. He needs to drop at least 10kg to get more mobility. Are people forgetting Weitering was the All Australian Full Back just 1 year ago?
A lot of the times when he gets exposed it's because we've turned the ball over and allowed the opposition to waltz the ball back through the corridor.. no defender is stopping that. I don't care if you put Sam Taylor in our defence instead of Weitering, he would be getting killed on the lead just the same. Don't forget the forward leads first and the defender has to react.. so any defender would get beaten if the ball is kicked out in front of a leading forward with that much space to work in.
As for him losing a few kgs.. possibly. But 1 or 2 kgs isn't going to make a massive difference. He's a lockdown defender. When our team defence is better he thrives. He's literally the best or 2nd best of all defenders for nullifying 1 on 1 contests.

It would extend his career by 2 years.I said it ages ago and was lambasted.
Weiters is perfect for the Tom Hawkins types, but he gets totally exposed by anyone with an ounce of mobility.
He needs to adapt or he’ll be left behind
In 2024 his 1-on-1 contest was the best of any defender in the competition with a loss rate of only 7.5%. I'd call that a lock down defender every day of the week...He's not a lockdown defender at all. This a myth. A lockdown defender stays close to his opponent. Weitering doesn't what do ever. A 3rd gamer Whitlock ran him ragged yesterday.
He wasn't drafted as a lockdown defender, we've just developed him that way due to necessity. He's unfortunately leaned way too much into his sook tendencies instead of the way he used to arrogantly dominate the back 50 when he was young. I think we beat that stuff out of them at Carlton. Are people forgetting Weitering was the All Australian Full Back just 1 year ago?

I'm talking about his defending this season. It's been horrible. In 2024 his 1-on-1 contest was the best of any defender in the competition with a loss rate of only 7.5%. I'd call that a lock down defender every day of the week...
Our team defence needs to improve.
You'll notice that he's often the last line of defence so he has to guard space to an extent because the kick could go over the back..
Football is not just played as man on man all over the park like the old days. Very different game with zones and tactics.
Whitlock leading up at the ball like that would have beaten any defender in the comp. That's on the ease and space at which they were able to bring the ball through the middle.
And Sam Taylor has the benefit of having a gun KPD supporting him in Jack Buckley. With Idun probably the best mid-sized defender in the competition. Weitering has pretty much been a one-man band back there the last few years since Jones left.Somebody tell me when Weiters (one of the most accountable defenders in the game) all of the sudden became Darcy Moore lmao?
Other than Sam Taylor you won't find a single KPD in the comp who's better at clamping an opponent.
So he's been below his usual AA standards this year and that makes you want Lewis Young ahead of him? A player who for 90% of his career with us has been bog ordinary?I'm talking about his defending this season. It's been horrible.
Watch his first qtr. He's clearly in a massive form slump. In 2024 his 1-on-1 contest was the best of any defender in the competition with a loss rate of only 7.5%. I'd call that a lock down defender every day of the week...

Below his usual standards and his loss rate is still the 2nd best amongst KPDs with more than 10 games at 13.2%.So he's been below his usual standards this year and that makes you want Lewis Young ahead of him? A player who for 90% of his career with us has been bog ordinary?
That stat is flawed. That only accounts for one on one's kicked to a contest. Not how many times his direct opponent has beaten him to the ball.Below his usual standards and his loss rate is still the 2nd best amongst KPDs with more than 10 games at 13.2%.
Which Key Forwards have gotten a hold of Weitering this year? That stat is flawed. That only accounts for one on one's kicked to a contest. Not how many times his direct opponent has beaten him to the ball.
It's not flawed. What you are asking for would be reflected in goals kicked by his opponent. I asked before for KPFs who gave gotten a hold of Weitering and nobody replied with one. That stat is flawed. That only accounts for one on one's kicked to a contest. Not how many times his direct opponent has beaten him to the ball.
That's my point. He doesn't. Young played on Georgiadis from the beginning. Weitering didn't even have the hardest match up from the beginning.Weitering is fine.
Just needs to show his opponent more respect or play a different role.
King last weekSo why hasn't he been exposed? How many forwards have actually gotten a hold of him? It's not like we have supported him with another gun KPD at any point since Jones left to help him out either.
No other KPD is Weiterings size. The modern game requires agility, endurance and speed. Weitering has none of these.
I loved Jack down back but that would be absurd. Jack's an undersized KPD and would get absolutely killed by the Hogans and Thilthorpes of the world. Jack's a perfect 2nd fiddle for Weitering as he's an offensive weapon from the back line and is suited to the players Weiters is not.If Jack was staying, itd be Weitering Id trade.
If you had it your way, we’d trade out all our good playersIf Jack was staying, itd be Weitering Id trade.
Surely that's taking the p!$$.If Jack was staying, itd be Weitering Id trade.
You can’t be serious?? Beyond bizarreIf Jack was staying, itd be Weitering Id trade.
