Well said.

A point I made earlier, it’s likely why not one player has come out in public.
People should be free to express their own religious or sexual beliefs in Australia without fear of persecution. It's a basic human right.

Don't want to get too political in these threads but I seriously cannot understand how we've sat back as a nation and let particular groups in Australia control the narrative. It's a product of below par media and spineless politicians who just want to occupy the middle ground.

All this crap about other peoples wars in Gaza and Ukraine. As terrible as it is - it seems that the inner city woke have given up worrying about our own problems such as lack of housing and cost of living and are focused more on overseas problems and local climate change. Two issues we will never control or influence as we carry a very small stick and produce 1-2% of the worlds emissions - so why all the wasted energy (and tax payer dollars). $5 billion in overseas aid last year - give it a spell. Local companies going broke because of net zero stupidity.

We've lost the plot.

Anyway - Cats for the flag. Sorry for the rant.

You got my vote but expect the post to be deleted not left enough.

You do realise that you can be concerned about the absolute atrocity that is happening in Gaza and the Ukraine, AND be angry with the cost of living/housing and other domestic issues?

I don't disagree. But I do get the feeling that we're all so offended by everything that there's maybe an opportunity for a bit of a reset and to place a bit more pressure on Canberra to fix issues that directly impact their constituents. And prioritise that. If we choose to insert ourselves into other matters then so be it - but it shouldn't detract from creating the best living conditions we can in Australia first.

The narrative around immigration in this country is mind blowingly stupid. But hey, let's ignore that and let people march on our streets and burn our flag.

I’m not sure too many would argue there are many genuine issues we have in Australia that are need of urgent attention. But I think it’s a convenient narrative to assert that the only reason they aren’t being addressed satisfactorily is that we are too preoccupied with overseas issues.

There are a range of reasons why political parties lack the courage these days to make meaningful policy changes to help better Australia. I don’t think being diverted by what’s happening in Gaza is one of them.

Don't disagree with any of that. Politicians are blinded by self interest but they've been very clever in throwing plenty of distractions at the voting public to divert away from the problems they can't fix.

As a country (and speaking very generally) we've just been stupid enough to take the bait and not cast an intelligent vote. I don't see it changing any time soon.

I couldn't care less what they do with Rankine, but he deserves a few weeks off for stupidity. The players can't argue that they don't get plenty of education on this stuff. For all the talk about the integrity behind some of the things we see out of AFL House, I reckon this is a bit of a landmark one for the people who run our game. If we line up the Rankine matter against similar incidents over the past 2 years then it should sit firmly as a 4-5 week suspension. This is the first time a player has stared down missing finals games - including a grand final. If the AFL are consistent and transparent (no comment there) then they need to treat this on face value and align the penalty with recent cases. If Rankine comes out of this with less than 4 weeks then the AFL deserve everything that comes their way.

Interestingly the punters think it will have an impact - since the Rankine story broke Sportsbet have wound the Cats into outright favouritism for the flag.
We have absolutely no right to be favorites against Brisbane. They have accounted for us three times in a row now and got us comfortably twice this year

Brisbane are the best side in it I agree.

I think the odds for them at present probably reflect punters being unsure if they finish top 4 - and also a couple of key players with injury concerns.

On their day though, their best is the best across the comp. But to balance that, we were probably saying something similar about Collingwood 5-6 weeks ago.

All their key injuries will be back for finals besides Payne and hipwood both who they can cover.

Neale they can’t but he will be back in.

I think they will roll us week 1.

If this gets off it is some seriously fked up double standards and corruption

Doesn't read like he'll get off, but rather there's a push from the AFL for a 5 game suspension - remembering he didn't self report and his apology only came about after concerns on his slur was raised

Adelaide is pushing for a lesser suspension but no idea on what grounds

Yeah, and no blokes ever came out for fear of being bashed for being gay. And?

Also, squaring up and probably subsequently sending some blokes to an early grave with a messed up mind from too many knocks.

I'd have a beer with your dad, but come on. I thought we'd moved past this?
Moved past what? Sharing silly anecdotes? This is a sports forum! We'll be doing this until the heat-death of the universe, comrade.

He's definitely not getting off. There's too much riding on this. The die is already cast. The only way I'd imagine him getting off would be if he came out with some crazy gymnastics along the lines of "My brother is gay, I went to a drag show with him last month, here's a picture of me at a pride-rally, clearly I'm not homophobic, it was just a slip, there's room for nuance etc."

...just kidding. He's done for the year.

Pushing for less because they are a chance of a premiership. Entirely self interest. Probably also something they would just throw a lesser player under the bus for

I'm sticking by he won't miss a final the AFL have dug themselves into a hole with this stuff with big suspensions now they are desperately looking for any mitigating circumstance they can expose so they can minimize this decision.

Sounds like they're claiming that Collingwood players were chirpy all match and this was a slur in retaliation

If your response to someone throwing a sledge your way us to return serve with a particular line of remarks, maybe you need to improve your vocabulary and come up with something smarter next time

Richmond trying to sell one of their Marvel games to play a home match elsewhere - I'm pretty sure that KP would love to host an 11th game 😎

Doesn't sound like something a Big 4 club would do...

Yeah, something smells.

It seems clear cut - multiple players heard it, and he's confessed to it.

They have clear precedent - they've suspended 5 players already.

So it should be a lay down misere, but the AFL has chosen to stall.

Hmm.

Hopefully the “I’m an aboriginal” card doesn’t get waved by Adelaide and rankine amongst this. Only thing I can think of that would make this apparently different on the surface

I'm wondering if that's the line of sledging that they're claiming he was on the end of
