Coach Justin Longmuir Pt 2

Short of a catastrophic result on Sunday, I can’t see them sacking him. Even then the board will probably be satisfied with a 15 win season.
I have know idea if he will ever lead us to the promised land, but what I’m hoping for from the club is some ****ing action over this off season.
The club needs to be proactive, in finding more coaching support. I would be hoping for something similar to the Richmond off season of 16/17.

We need some kind of senior assistant that offsets JLs weaknesses, and any other support that is required. Someone who is able to provide insight into motivating the players for those big games that we occasionaly drop our bundle in.

Need to recruit some hardened experience role players.

They can not allow things to just keep rolling on, we need finals experience into this list otherwise it will never get there.
Im in exactly the same boat and have been for a while -in fact EVEN if we don’t miss finals, its clear as day he needs support in there and that obviously is in the form of an experienced coach who is a good man manager and great motivator- hence why I think Ken’s* strengths work perfectly opposed to jlos weaknesses and vice verca

*And before someone inevitably laughs simply revert to Ken’s record v JLos

It’s no even a competition

People are talking about getting more motivated for the big occasions.
The opposite might be true.
We might be trying too hard.
Elite performance is about flow.
Winding yourself up too much, and in particular overthinking, detracts from the unconscious, reflex abilities that you have trained yourself and your team to perform.
So our apparent lack of pressure last Friday might be due to us overthinking where we were supposed to be, getting caught up in the details of executing a plan etc.
Our piss poor goal accuracy is because we are trying too hard to get every bit right rather than trust what we have done correctly 1000s of times before.

Sadly Femantle are just not a team i can put my beleif into.

For over 30 yrs is the way it has been. All coaches have great periods and then terrible periods.

We have had absolute superstars play in our team

So we cant jsut put all the blame on the coach/ the players. There is somethign fundamnetally flawed with culture at the club. We are seemingly not instilling on our players that win at all costs mind set.

Having attended many of the social gatherings over the years with players after the games it always felt like a FUN Club to b part of . but never a serious club.

what happens behind closed doors i dont know. But for over 30 yrs we are lacking that ruthless desire to win every game.

So i live in HOPE, not in BELIEF.

Hope means while i am a member , i no longer spend money on merchandise like i did for many many years. I no longer try to encourage others to support Freo. I jsut keep quiet when others belittle our team and rave about their team. I cant fight for FREO if they wont Fight.

So Hope endures. They can build my faith by evidence.

Let go Freo , do it for the Club. the Fans. yourselves.

Thx for the intrusion.
Bold words, not everyone will agree with them, but surely everyone can agree you have a justifiable perspective.

The difference between Freo and Brizzy was clear. Brizzy chipped around but there was no hesitation. They could be decisive because they had confidence in their skills and that when they looked around with ball in hand someone would be ready to receive.

And it's also not just about this game. Everyone can have a bad game. Yes even when a lot is on the line. Losing to Brisbane wasn't an issue as much as the way the team went about it not only in this game but many others this year, and going back to 2023. Can even look at the wins. Great comeback against the Pies for example. But I couldn't help but feel more like 'What in the f#ck were they doing the first three quarters? Why did it take falling behind by 22 points in the last quarter to attack like they can and should?' Same again to an extent against the Blues. No excuse to be mucking around with such inferior teams so often. You don't necessarily want your admin sticking their noses in the footy department stuff but this is an example where they need to see the opportunity and say this just hasn't been good enough.

His presser today was so funny.

“We have 15 wins.”
“We’re looking to get our 16th win”
“Not sure you heard me the first time but we have 15 wins”
“We have as many wins as 4th place”
“We have more wins than dogs”

Not to read too much into a JL presser but that one was a lot more cagey than usual.

As frustrated as I was with the performance on the weekend, I can't blame Longmuir for being cagey, everyone is coming for his head this week, regardless of how good/poor of a coach you are, that's gotta be a lot of pressure.

He's taking the disrespect personally. It looks like we are getting the Michael Jordan Game 6 version of JLo this week.

agreed with scott, not sure mitchell has proved that yet. they switch it wide and have dambrosio, amon, impey or dempsey, humphries or holmes on the end of it, we get NOD, banners or JOM :(

i think both those teams have better ball users across the ground than we do, not sure if thats an inherently a player issue or a coach issue.
Mitchell got get of JOM.

Had a peak and he’s even more a bundle of nervous energy than usual. Very toey and defensive. I dunno some people may see it differently, it’s very awkward viewing.

If this leads to us coming out and breathing fire on Sunday then I will have zero complaints.

We need this sort of angry energy amongst the club, rise up to the pressure and knock the critics dead.

Sounds like something you wheel out in a performance review to try and justify your position

I tend to think that we should be chatting to Longmire. I know he said he wasn't ready to get back into it but it is a little different signing up to rebuild a club like Melbourne or Carlton versus taking on a team ready to compete like Freo. I would keep Longmuir and get support of Longmire is not available though. Although Montgomery is definitely worth a look.

Spoken like a man desperately trying to save his job.

At this stage Longmuir will be staying on as head coach, any real discussion about him getting sacked is really null and void, it's not happening.

I would be looking at assistant coaches like Skipworth and Montgomery to come over though in the event we do let him go next year, we would have an assistant coach ready in the wings to take the reigns. But both are highly regarded assistants, so I'd be looking at them regardless.

I thought he was ok. Hard to argue with his assessment of last week. Liked that he didnt give anyone an out around being team orientated. It's pretty obvious this week is all but do or die.

He got asked 'do you feel unlucky to get 15 wins and potentially missing the 8'. I mean he either says yeah I feel stiff or he says it is what it is, I'm just chasing number 16.

Same with the question around expectation. The Dogs haven't got past the first week of the finals since playing in a GF in 2021. We've got more wins than them as it stands, they're under no less pressure than us.

We've gone 11 of 13 or whatever it is to get ourselves in a position to make the 8. There'll be plenty of heat if we dont turn up Sunday, but right now you either take it on, or concede.

Plenty on here have already put up the white flag!

Yep we will continue to accept mediocrity and burn another year on this list while other lists improve
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. He has the players confidence and is on 15 wins. It would do more harm then good to sack him this season. Although saying that, I can't imagine the club is happy behind the scenes despite the tune they are playing in front of the media.

Clubs have proven you can turn things around in a season (Hawks, GC, Adelaide, Collingwood) the list goes on. If he fumbles next season he will be sacked and the club will appoint someone new in the hopes that they can turn things around quickly. This is how organisations that answer to board members and not forum posters operate. They are generally risk averse and are definitely not reactive. For the record, I don't count 15 wins and missing finals as a pass mark for JLo and I don't have much confidence in him either. Despite this, his job is secure next season so you better get used to it and hope he wakes the **** up and gets with the times. I like the poster's suggestion about appointing someone to help him like Adelaide did.

It's a frustrating situation that he has to talk about it at all, but has to answer the questions he's being asked. Focus is on the season instead of the game ahead. Best he can do is bat away the question.
