Stand by for the furor when the next decent Magpie F/S comes into draft consideration. Odds are the rules will be adjusted again.

There haven't been too many cases like JHF whereby an interstate club could leverage the system and have the local kids returning after a short stay elsewhere. And once the kids attend private schools in Victoria, progress through Vic development programs and spend a year or two at a Melbourne club, I'd assume it would lessen the incentives to move back to the Qld clubs.
Not a Magpie but there is an elite F/S coming for a big Melbourne club(Blues) in 2026, ie. Cody Walker, rated at least in the top 5 prospects, some draft pundits have him at number 1.

Didn't we also see Robert Scott's son (forget his first name and is at North now) who was in the Suns Academy and provided elite coaching and was also Father / Son eligible at both North and Geelong choose North even though he never lived in Melbourne?

Convesley, we saw the Lizard Blakey, who was at the Swans Academy and was also Father / Son eligible at North and Brisbane (through Dad's career at Fitzroy and no doubt spent time in Brisbane as a kid when Dad was an assistant with us and coach us to one game) choose Sydney.

As you pointed out there are so many examples of kids choosing / not choosing clubs who they are eligible (Dunks another who didn't want to go to Sydney as a Father / Son), so as long as clubs pay the price a kid is nominated and the matching club actually has a pick in that range, they should still get him and the AFL should just **** right off with their changes that haven't even been tested this year.
I feel that the clubs may be sensing weak leadership at the AFL and feel that they can throw their weight around to get what they want. And why wouldn't they?

Not sure I'm going to be around long enough to see it, but I'm hanging out for that elusive Saints gun F/S. The Footy Gods will demand a sacrifice of the recalcitrant Sainters and for sure that gun will land here.

What we need is some big Melbourne clubs to have top 10 rated player's coming through as Father/Sons and/or their NGAs over the next couple of years and they might have a 2nd think about it. Lets face it the AFL are renowned for their ability to sway with the prevailing narrative and backflip.

Cody Walker a Carlton father/son coming through next years draft is apparently right in line to be a top 3-5 pick, need 1 or 2 more to come through. I'm sure Cody will enjoy playing for the Kangaroos or Eagles.

Think the Bombers have a highly rated F/S or NGA in the next few years. Dogs have a few as well but not sure if they are first rounders.

Has anything actually been confirmed? Or are we all freaking out about things that have only gone into the media?

The AFL are the type of company to let this leak then see how much backlash there is before not changing anything or just making the matching more difficult

You know, I saw this earlier today and then went right through the day before I remembered that the 2025 draft is the next one and the 2026 draft is post-Annable. Happier with that then 🤣
Our 2027 crop is potentially loaded.

And I really want Caylen Murray from next year’s crop.

I honestly don't get the outrage about it. Ignoring the free agency debate, Allen would be wanting out at seasons end anyway. He's OOC, he and the club can't get his body right to play good consistent footy, West Coast have good young forwards they can put time into developing, and he wants to win a Premiership. His options are basically retire or go somewhere else via trade in a universe where free agency isn't a thing.

What annoys me most about this whole thing is that clubs don't necessarily have a right to F/S prospects. They still need to entice the kid to want to play there. They do have the right to draft picks but they do not have the right to retain those players in perpetuity. Once again they have to entice players to want to stay there.
That system disadvantages clubs that are not well run. It does not disadvantage clubs at the bottom of the ladder, though there is definitely correlation between those two. We were a club that was terribly run. Nobody really wanted to stay and who cold blame them?
Once it became clear to the comp we were heading somewhere, had drafted some good young talent, all of a sudden, players wanted to join the team. To get to that stage the club made a lot of good decisions with coaching and admin, then in talent identification.

GWS and GC were given essentially the same package to enter the competition. One was clearly better set up and better run. In that time one club has made it to one grand final, 3 prelims and 3 semi finals as their best finishes. The other looks set to play their first final this season.

Not sure why it is any better when they decide to go to the GF losers or prelim finals losers. There is normally very little between the 4 teams. It often comes down to who was better on the day.
It sounds like we are the only team interested in him anyway.

With all the talk of pick compensation to the WCE (pick 2) for loosing Allen, what compensation would the Lions get (if any) if they were to loose either/both Starevich and/or Ah Chee?

Time to teach them what to do on the draft year

Ah chee isn't a free agent so has to be traded. We wouldn't get any compo if Starce left as a FA given we are bringing in Allen.

Yeah, I'm sure we wouldn't hear a peep from Eddie if OA wanted to go to Collingwood.
I doubt that McStay is as good as Allen is though their stats aren't a million miles apart. Collingwood lost the prelim by a point the year they signed McStay as a FA.

Dougie Cochrane (Port NGA - potentially) is currently the number 1 rated kid by most draft watchers.

Cody Walker is in the top 5 discussion.

Essendon have a top rated father son in 2027 in Kobe Bewick. Plus they have a lot of nga kids coming through.

If the WA clubs set their NGA academies up right, they have a large pool of South African immigrants and the largest indigenous population to draw from.

And the SA clubs have been fighting for greater access to on metropolitan indigenous kids, who are currently locked out their academies by the AFL. That’s why the likes of Rankine and Wanganeen-Milera were in the open pool.

So Eddie's tipping us to go back to back? Because otherwise we won't be the reigning premiers when Oscar joins us.

I actually really enjoy listening to Ed. He has a wealth of knowledge and I find him somewhat amusing. But god he loves the Pies.

He also said he was completely against FA from the start as it will benefit the big clubs like Collingwood. I feel he sees himself as a custodian of the game and is in pursuit of a an equal as possible league.

I don’t actually mind him and when he was President he got Collingwood to request those home games or special one off games to assist struggling clubs. I think that’s how Lions V Pies for Easter Thursday got a start.

The prince

ADELAIDE FOOTBALL ROYALTY

James Aish.

Never forget!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing wrong with poaching a first round draft player from a struggling club when your Collingwood though. Nothing to see here, the stronger the powerhouse Vic clubs get, the better it is for everyone......

Pies chased Tom Lynch (literally, they were photographed/videoed climbing over a fence to avoid reporters seeing them meeting with him) when Eddie was president - in a year where Gold Coast finished second last.

This is clickbait garbage anyway.

Free agency exists because the players want it. The compromise with the clubs is the FA compensation. This incentivises clubs at the bottom of the ladder to push out their experienced players (with value), in return for top draft picks.
Players leave for 2 things - either money (Ben McKay, TDK), or success (Tom Lynch).
So naturally, players from clubs at the bottom of the ladder, move to clubs at the top of the ladder.

Take away compensation, you'd have clubs at the bottom of the ladder fighting harder to keep their senior players and offering more coin to convince them.
