Geelong and GWS “home” finals

Hello,

I’m new to the game and something doesn’t make any sense to me…

Can someone explain why Geelong can’t play a home final at their home ground, which holds 40k, yet GWS get to play a home final at their home ground which only holds 25k.
It’s very simple.

Cats game will draw 85k, meaning over 45k fans would miss out.

Giants game will draw 20k, meaning nobody will miss out.

But I absolutely agree with your sentiment. If GWS were hosting Collingwood in a prelim, it should definitely be played at ACCOR of SCG.

No, we don’t. We accept that if we are going to host 2 games at the mcg, of course it makes sense to host the 2 biggest possible games we can get there.

If someone said to you ‘you have to spend 2 nights in Afghanistan’ you’re going to ask for the best hotel there aren’t you.
Come on, Victoria isn’t run by Islamic nut jobs.
Pyongyang would be a better analogy

Geelong request to play home games at the mcg, so mcg is actually their home ground as well, which is why the afl fixtures their home finals games at the mcg, which is a home ground to them.

SCG is not a home ground of the giants. It’s actually pretty obvious! Hope this clears it up

Because Geelong are the self entitled spoilt brat of the Victorian teams, that start crying and throwing a tantrum when things don’t go their own way. That’s why it’s suddenly a problem.

AFL has an agreement with the MCC, that states a minimum of games be played at the MCG. It also makes sense, that for a Victorian team to play at the higher capacity ground. So unless that crap ground can increase its capacity to 100k+ Geelong should expect their games being moved during the finals to the MCG.
Most Geelong supporters accept playing finals at the MCG

It's about $ if the AFL can make more money, they are going to do that.

I would actually prefer Geelong to play at GMHBA as, I think them playing at MCG helps them more.
Yeah I think if they played every home game at Kardinia they'd have less experience/practice playing on the G, and the dimensions are so different. Might improve their home and away record slightly but would hurt their finals record. One reason we used to struggle at the MCG was Subiaco, like Kardinia, was so long and narrow.

As of late it seems the Cats are better at the G anyway.

Furthermore, the Grand Final should be played at the highest placed team’s home ground. Earn top spot, earn the right.

The MCG’s contract with the AFL is nothing more than an MCC/VFL boys club hand-shandy party. One stadium, one state, no matter who finishes on top. It’s a farce dressed up as “tradition.”

If you cant acknowledge playing the grand final at your home stadium is a incredible leg up you are living in lala land.

If it was about money, the AFL could auction it off every second or third year to different states and make a fortune. If it was about tradition and the game, they’d actually make tickets available to members instead of stuffing the place with corporate packs.

Imagine if the Ashes were always played in England. That's the equivalent

You know, I once asked the same question about Port Adelaide and Grand Finals. Some of our opponents get to play GF’s at home, and we will never get to.
Once I realised that it’s just about Melbourne and AFL and money, and nothing about fairness or performance or an even competition, then i just became resigned to the fact.
Ditto for Geelong and finals.

Geelong give them a get out by playing home games through the year at the MCG.
Giants play zero home games at the SCG.

We aren’t going to build in Western Sydney playing home finals at the SCG.
Cats had a 100 year plus head start to build that. In a 100 years Im sure we will play in the biggest stadium in Sydney.

By the way that’s Accor not the SCG.
Listen, I think Engie is fine for your home finals, but stop muddying the waters by mentioning Accor, if you don’t know why, then look it up.

Can’t be played at Accor, c’mon people, read a newspaper.

I’m not “muddying” anything.

Accor is the largest stadium in Sydney as the MCG is in Melbourne.
Accor is not able to host AFL games anymore. AAMI is a lovely boutique stadium that is the perfect size for a Sunday arvo Dees v Gold Coast game…..

LukeParkerno1 thoughts on Accor hosting AFL?
lol didn’t say I want it. Said that if you are using the Cats MCG example the closest fit is Accor.
We will continue playing our games at Engie. Thanks though for your concern.

So that’s a no moving the GF? Hmm thought you were concerned about fairness.

Not what I said or inferred big fella, Accor will not be hosting any AFL games under the current configuration. I’m happy with Engie for your games, try to read, it helps.

Over the last 10 seasons (not including covid) Geelong has played 19 home games at the MCG in the Home and away season, as well as 11 home finals there for a total of 30 home games at the MCG over those 10 seasons. When you include about 60 away games there, they have played dozens of games at the ground over the last decade. They play there almost as often as they play at GMHBA. It's one of Geelong's two home grounds.

GWS have no familiarity with the SCG at all. None. Why would they play home finals at the SCG? They don't play any home games there, like Geelong get to do at the MCG, and only play the one away game there each season, unlike Geelong who play a heap of away games at the MCG. The SCG is not a "second" home ground like the MCG officially is for Geelong. The Cats have played almost an entire season's worth of home games at the MCG over the last 10 years.

Gold Coast is in a similar situation to GWS. Why would Gold Coast play home finals at the Gabba? It's not their home ground (the MCG IS one of Geelong's home ground), they don't play away games there (Geelong play heaps of away games at the MCG), and of course the Grand Final isn't played at the Gabba so there is no ulterior benefit to playing there (the Grand Final is, of course, at the MCG which is another additional advantage to Geelong)

It's such a ridiculous discussion.
