Guarding space tonight wont get it done Brisbane's short game will just cut us up pressure on the ball carrier and receiver will, we should be testing Rayner and Berry early around their injury recovery I'd also put some physical attention into the Ashcroft boys to see how they and the rest of the lions boys react I'm not suggesting bring back the biff but something half resembling it would be OK.

We know the Lions will come out switched on and try to take the game away from us in the first quarter. So the Catters need to come out ready tonight. I really am not sure which way this game will go. Both sides are capable of winning it. I'll be working tonight so I won't see it live.

We'll need to get our intercept game going quickly, and have our midfield at least break even with theirs to prevent our defense / intercept being overwhelmed by a sheer weight of numbers.

I'm nervous about this and about 6 other things going on in my life at the moment. Please just get it done, Geelong <3

after all these years I'm still trying to work out if it's a good or bad sign when I want to throw up this early before the match

One thing I am certain of - the loser of tonight's game will comfortably beat Fremantle next week (I don't give the Suns a hope of getting near them), and start a 50/50 prospect at worst against Collingwood in the prelim.

I think the key to this game is to make it ugly, unfortunately. Make it a dog-eat-dog coalface fight, don't let the Lions operate with a half-metre of space, and then use our hard-running half forwards surge onto the footy and run it through space if we managed to force it forward.

Guys like Atkins, Blicavs, Mullin and O'Connor are big, strong, tough boys, but don't have the ball use skills of their direct opponents.

The Lions have so much quality in depth through the middle - if it becomes a free-flowing, classic game, then they will cut us up through the corridor. We won't win a beauty contest; we might win a street fight.
A bold strategy, given our clear strength for the year is quality of ball movement, while being the 2nd highest scoring team in the comp.

Reducing the match to trench warfare would not favour us IMO.

Thought I'd add the one major change that has happened since we last played each other. Fascinating to see what effect it has.

And based on what happened with Heeney, don't be surprised if O'Connor's job is to find out how tough Rayner actually is when he's not running around with that stupid grin picking off blokes with their head over the ball.

I feel like it is almost the opposite we need to play 2020 style keepings off for as long as possible, the switch switch go. Set up full press

I want nothing quick between arcs, unless our structure is set behind the ball.

This is the silver lining for me.

Don't get me wrong, I'll be upset if we don't win tonight. But if we don't, it's far from season over IMO.

Switch switch go did get picked off for about 5 Lions goals last time. They seemed to feast on us chipping at angles after slowing it down.

If you want nothing quick between the arcs you take away our strengths as an elite running team - especially Smith, Holmes, Cameron and Miers. We have used multiple tempos within games all season and that should remain the directive. We are more of a boundary outnumber team than through the corridor focused (this contrasts with Brisbane). Executing it well is the main thing. If you make mistakes Brisbane will feast on them and expose you no matter the pace you go at. They can surge back through congestion just as easily as having an open forward line.

Brisbane do a few things really well.

1- they move the ball from HB between centre and wing trying to catch your zone out looking for an opposing into the middle, or running it wide. They only commit to wide or corridor once they have an opening, and then if you overcommit they are happy to bring it back the other direction.. they do this better than any other team and it can open sides up in 10 minutes of footy. They get on a roll with it

2- they structure very quickly ahead of play, you need to switch and change angles against them and spread the width of the field. The MCG will suit our attacking ball movement against them.

3- you need to get your entries deep 20m out from goal. They are very difficult on transition to stop if you turn the ball over at the 50M arc. I want us to no matter what switch or try and run thru them as opposed to bomb it to 50m out. That will not work as Harris andrews plonks himself in that spot alll night.

3- they defend around a contest and clamp down well. We need to really ensure we are getting quick hands out of that 10-20 m congestion and into open space. Use the width of the ground to flick it around and find an opening. Dunkley seems to be the one who dictates a lot of this around stoppages for them

Jhye Clark's selection is a surprise. I cant figure a role for him that gets him into the starting 22. I imagine his role will be as sub to boost our defensive inside mid stocks when he comes on. We have enough flexibility to cover other area if we have an injury.

Nothing quick from them, yes.

I feel like our turnover game is going to be key here. If we can apply as much pressure as possible when they have it, force them into as many turnovers as possible, and then use our running game to spread and punish them when they do... then we're going to be well placed.

When we get beaten it tends to be the first half of that equation IMO. We allow too much space and sides that use the ball very well (eg. Brisbane, GWS) just slice through our zone. But when we get it right, we close up that space, cut off options and force turnovers. For me, that will be the game tonight right there.

Collingwood showed how its done last night. They continually forced Adelaide into the long kick down the line and Darcy Moore just mopped up every time. Its going to be harder for us because Brisbane are a much better transition team than Adelaide, but if we can bring some serious heat down on them when they have the ball and enable Stewy/Zuth/COS to rack up more intercepts than Andrews then that'll take us a long way towards winning IMO.

The other funny thing ... I'm pretty sure that no matter what happens tonight, we're quite likely to go through it all again on GF day. The karma gods are probably gonna give us this win and then say, "so, do youse reckon youse can do it again??"

Anyway, I'm off to begin the journey inwards ... good luck to us all, and may the Spirit of Steven Handley guide our ruck fortunes.
