Is there a reason why we’re trying to get pick 2?

Assume its to get a good pick ahead of where Dean is tipped to go (now estimated to be around pick 7).

Could do something like picks 9, 10 + F2/3 for 2 & 31.

Still gets us two top-10 picks with one of them being at the very pointy end.

If we are looking at getting pick 2, then imo maybe we have a gun player in mind that we need the pick to do the deal for a particular player?

Merrett would cost at least a first rounder, around a million a year in salary, is about to turn 30 and might want out of * because he is sick of losing and their list is going backwards...

He is a gun, but if he leaves it won't be to us...

The thing is - i personally think we're pickled/screwed no matter we try. With our current age/salary profile and intended mini reset, i think it fails as players exit quicker than we find replacements. The last 4 years was our chance to build the right ingredients and we just didnt for whatever reason. So i really do think they have stuffed this chance; a really good chance.

But good rated players include Sam Flanders or Walter. Better rated than Buku, Petrucelle, Chesser etc. I think why we fail is we conyiually target good players without a role for them (e.g. Cerra). Hawks target players for roles. We just havent learnt and target quality for quality's sake.

Can't see how we would get a Walter type without moving on Curnow. And isn't Flanders an example of quality for quality's sake given he wants more midfield time and he's not a massive POD from who is already there?

Just on that Wickzki post, I'm stunned at all this praise for Ethan Read. Every Gold Coast game I've watched this year he looks like the most unco unnatural footballer on the planet. Truly tall players get so much more leeway in terms of their development.

Straight swap for Butters?

Personally would be disappointed if this happened. Like him far more than some of our other small forwards on the list and is only 21. Showed some good signs up the ground and lifted his defensive pressure in 2025. Not going to get anything of value for him either. Really don't understand what we gain by letting him go.

Pretty sure he was injured before returning late in the season. Regardless, I have never bought into those comparisons. Someone like Ned Long plays every game for the Pies and wouldn't get a game for us because we already have 917 inside midfielders. It's all about the role needing to be filled.

Came back in the wafl in round 8, if he’s able to earn a spot then I’ll happily eat my words but I’ve watched enough to have doubts, particularly if we don’t make serious changes to our game plan. Lacks serious football iq and isn’t great under pressure or by hand, is an athlete rather than a footballer and is only ok by foot, other than his speed I just don’t see it

Mackie developing a poor reputation around the league. Won't come to the trade table fairly. Has to walk away feeling like he's gotten one over on you and people are wising up to it.

Yep. TBH, I’m not really interested in Walters. I’d rather collect the first rounders and get a butters or something else that’s more a need to address weaknesses.
I’d only do deals that consist of players(from other clubs that want curnow) if where talking players like a Humphrey/ gulden types. Otherwise, see what we can pry out of other clubs with potential picks that we could get from a curnow deal? If there’s nothing that suits our needs, then he stays. Imo

If we are serious about getting things right we need a quick and agile A grade onballer. That is non-negotiable for me. If Butters is half a chance we go for it. All in. DeKoning pick, Silvagni pick and Motlop for Butters and a third round pick if possible.

We are NOT in full rebuild mode unless we fail to get what we actually need.

Smith and Chesser next year is amazing, but they are probably mostly off a flank and Wing which is great as it fixes those positions but doesn't fix the onball mix issue.

If we land exactly what we need onballer wise, next year we contend.

Walsh fit, Chesser, Smith and someone like Butters around the ball is no longer a rebuild, it's rebuilt.

We will get two first rounders in compensation picks and we are yet to offload Hollands, Motlop, Acres and McGovern. IMO we should be offering a mid like Cerra if we can get Butters.

Watched a bit more Chesser footage.

Consistently good with ball in hand, provides run and carry. Will look better in a team whose forwards aren't double-teamed everywhere.

Doesn't bite off tough kicks, but doesn't concede or go lateral often
