It sounds like they just want to go between the arcs which is honestly a glaring error of judgement.

At least they're doing something
Nah. It's great.
Last disposal not last touch.

Reckon it will work well.

It's matches what they currently do in the AFLW - so i understand it from that point of view

maybe leaves room open for amendments later

I think he means the error in judgement is only implementing this between the arcs and not including the forward 50 as they do in the SANFL

Don't agree with that.
Arcs only should be fine.

Yeah the sanfl rule is last disposal everywhere which is a brilliant rule, has been massively successful here. I have been a huge advocate. But if I'm reading it right they only want it to apply outside f50 and d50, which is a mistake.

They need to eliminate umpire interpretation not leave it there in places and not others.

2026 between the arcs before they grow a brain and it is just like the SANFL for 2027

This, over and over again. Make it as clear cut, black and white as possible.

Shouldn't be too hard to interpret?

Kick or handpass and OOB in the arc. Free kick.
Kick or handpass inside F50. Throw in.

Kicks inside 50 are almost never penalised for insufficient intent as the intent is to get the ball forward to try and score in those scenarios.

Yeah I guess it's not too far outside what we want to see. I just feel like every extra rule adds 5 minutes explanation to people new to the game as well.

Our biggest obstacle to growing the game is complexity

Bad laws apply to both teams. It doesn’t mean you keep them.
Sure, fairness doesn’t enter into it though. For the record I’m not a fan of the idea of the ball staying live when it hits a post, I think it would really change the feel of the game.

Can I ask for clarity on the SANFL rule, is it:

  • all over the ground, or
  • between the arcs & forward 50

The latter would mean the defensive team isn't penalised with a direct shot on goal for an errant kick or handball

Tom Morris said it's the latter, but I've also heard it's a blanket all over the field rule - so just a little confused

Been a while since I watched, thought it was all over the ground. Might have missed the d50 exemption. In any case I think it should just apply anywhere.

How many fewer stoppages are there with the last disposal rule? Do ruckmen become less important?
Read somewhere that it will result in a few more frees, but the great majority of throw-ins would remain, so to answer your question, ruckmen dont really become less important.

FWIW I love rule changes that replace subjectivity with objectivity. People get caught up in the idea of fairness or justice and tie themselves up in knots around edge cases. This is sport though, nobody is getting shot, or losing their job, the rules get set and coaches and players play within those rules. Keep it objective, keep it simple.

It's all over the field. Morris is wrong.
