Walter is a good prospect but he's been kept out of the side by Jy Farrar.

Ethan Read is the better prospect but he's extended to 2028.

If it was Walter, Jake Rogers and a decent pick I'd then consider it for a proven star of the comp.

3 potential best 22 players for one comp star is still not improving us for sure immediately. I've started to lean back to keeping Charlie.

I cant see how the manchild can stay now if what has been written about his relationship with Carlton (and the coach) is true.

I’m a big fan of Walter but geez it makes me nervous giving up Charlie for a player with potential. If he meets his potential we are laughing, if not, it’s a big call…

Would need to balance out that risk with at least pick 6 and potentially more coming back our way. I get that Charlie is 29 next year and has an injury history but if we trade him the deal has to be a considered a decent win for us.

Yeah, I think we have to be wary of a narrative developing that it is a straight trade.

We should be a little wary of Walter imo. He is physically similar to Charlie and moves in a similar way, but without the penetrating field kicking or long range goal kicking, and his on field performance is behind Charlie at the same age. He kicks goals ok, but worryingly, he barely gets the ball. Career averages of roughly 6 disposals and 2 marks?

The argument for trading Charlie is we are just short of good players and need depth.

For GC it is that they are ready to go now, can't wait for Walter/Read, and have to give up young guys anyway at some point as they have too many. They also HAVE to do it imo - sure, the things look great now but King is a FA next year, I think Anderson and Rowell after that, and they are one bad injury run from it all happening again...

The trade should be something like us getting:
  • pick 6 (ahead of Dean pick) and pick 15 (to match Dean) = a bonus top 10
  • Walter
  • Flanders
  • one more player (eg Rogers, but I would push for someone like Alex Davies)

Gold Coast get:
- Curnow
- our TDK and SOS compensation (hopefully 9 and 10) which they can use to match two academy picks in top 5.

We get essentially 5 players for Curnow, TDK and SOS which helps our age profile and depth issues. GC - have not given up a beat 23 players here....

Bringing in Walter for Charlie makes sense for both clubs. Charlie could realistically help Gold Coast push for a flag, while Walters is the right fit and age profile for when we’re ready to contend. I’m not concerned about losing Charlie Curnow as much as I am about our key position forward depth. Bringing Walters in, along with picks or players, would mean we wouldn’t have to scour the market for another key position forward option—though adding extra young depth would still be valuable.

If we were to move Charlie on, we'd need a CHF who can move up the ground and use it well by foot. That'll then allow us to use H as a deep forward where I think he performs best.

Not sure Walter is that

This is getting a little ridiculous. What Curnow is capable of at his best is far above the others being discussed (Walter and the like not in the top echelon at GC). Who cares if Charlie doesn’t want to stay? That will turn when he realises that’s his only option. We have to play hard ball here, and get paid clear overs or no deal. End of story, from my point of view.

Dunno.
Walter in the curnow deal just doesn’t excite me.
I’d be more looking down the speed and kicking side of things imo
Tend to agree. Walter is a good, even great prospect, but the largest key to us improving is ball movement and to a degree leg speed. Better connection and a balanced attack. A quality small forward and improvement in transition is a higher priority.

Having said that, if Charlie wants out and we are open to it, a deal will be difficult to negotiate. Suns need their draft capital this year for some quality academy kids who will balance them up long term. If they want Charlie over a longer term prospect for immediate impact, they may let Walter go, as a decent piece of the deal.

I am quite happy to run with our remaining forwards Harry McKay, backed by Brodie Kemp, Ashton Moir and young forward/ruck O’Keeffe as a balanced and effective attack. Adding in another small forward option to Williams, Frankie and friends should be a priority, particularly if Motlop is on the table.

Having said that, Walter is in a great age bracket to provide progression when Harry slows down. Better future planning than having Charlie and Harry finishing their careers in close succession. Walter has a couple of clanger shots in circulation, but also has some impressive highlights. Much more likely to be a gun than be a bust.

Jed Walter and two 1st round picks for Charlie.

Three unknowns for a two time Coleman medalist and literally the final piece to add to what would then be a strong flag contending GC list. GC would be nuts to say no.
