The same top end player, that we have have been saying is off the table?

I think it's all posturing, as the old saying goes; "everything is for sale"
They’re the ones who have to come to us with an outrageous offer

Because i dont think we will accept “acceptable” for Charlie

Cut it fine if so... already had 8, kicking for 9, skimmed the inside of the post. We were down by 5, in the final minute.

He was about 20-25 m out, slight angle, it wasn't an absolute gimme... but he definitely should have kicked it.

Hawthorn 2009 I think.

He was filthy it hit the post. There’s no way it was a deliberate miss.

Okay Draft Guru's ... does Port's pick 7 (that GC currently hold) take us out of the "hit zone" for Harry Dean?

Good question!

1 West Coast - highly doubtful

2 Richmond
3 Richmond (tied to North Melbourne)

- again, highly doubtful he's bid on that early

4 Essendon
5 Essendon (tied to Melbourne)

- might depend on Ridley leaving but also doubtful

The players I reckon that'll def go ahead of Dean:

Duursma, CDT, Sharp, Lindsay, Cumming

There's also NHH who I can see a team like * punting on or Greeves as a big bodied mid.

WCE will likely get pick 2 for Oscar as well so there's that to factor too...

Were managers not cut in to pro-rata increases with the salary cap bumps? Or is it quite normal for them to be so aggressively shopping their clients around?

I think Dean is the 3rd best prospect in the open pool, and 5th overall. If I were Richmond's list manager, I'd bid on him. If he gets past them, I can see him sliding a bit as Essendon have too many KPD's.

Essendon could bid
My thinking is that there’s an informal understanding among clubs with highly rated future prospects coming up ... and Essendon likely wouldn’t want to sour relationships or set a precedent by bidding early on another club’s talent.

No.
Aside from the possibility it gets bumped to 8 for the Draper compo, and then falls 3 more spots when Uwland, Patterson and Annabel get bid on (so it's used at 10-11), clubs won't let us take an extra top 10ish player as well as Dean.

In that case, the most realistic path forward would be to package our picks and shift up the order - potentially targeting West Coast’s pick #2 or Richmond’s pick #4.

That said, we’d still likely need to retain the SOS compensation pick (plus more) to help us match a bid for Harry Dean... and acquire more picks for Ison.

If you want to be certain of getting a pick before Dean, find a way to get the Oscar Allen compo.

I wouldn't rely on the informal understanding. It all changes this year with the new draft rules.

Im not sure if we can considering the points we will need, but I wouldnt mind trading one of the comp picks for a player or 2. Try to maximise the value of the TDK and Jack compo as much as possible.
Not sure any of the prospects available at 2 or 4 would be truly worth it.
Think we could get more by getting in mature players

All word games. Imagine a club being asked about a top player and they just blurt out "yeah yeah, he's definitely on the table, for sure!"

Our position in a potential Curnow trade is excellent. His contract and our public stance means our grip is tight so if a club wants him, they have to throw everything at us to get him. It's just smart tact from us.

It's all part of the game, required player, don't want to trade, he will be here next year, blah blah blah. We won't know the truth until trade week.

100% Carlton will listen to offers and talk about it, for sure.

Carlton need to weight things up. We will need to get tall forwards coming in before we look to trade Curnow. We probably need to find two before even considering trading Curnow. So that means we probably get one cheap/free from another club and we get one who is the future of our club. An example is if we get Mihocek/Johnson to agree to come to us and we get Walter to agree to come to us. The next step to unlocking the Curnow trade is getting another really good player to come to us for our midfield IMO.

If Curnow goes to GC, I think Walter will be told by his manager that he will be behind Curnow and King and that he will be stuck in the reserves so it will push him out more likely than not.

I don't think Carlton are trading Curnow without at least two very good established players coming in and suring up major deficiencies as a result. We won't do this and leave a hole, we will have to walk away from this stronger and more balanced.

I think for Carlton to take trading Curnow from talk to actually doing it, we will have to have multiple other trades lined up meaning we get a key forward cheap, we get another key forward who we see as top level and we get the right A grade midfielder in.

Our issue is that our list is unbalanced, both age and position wise.

We lack fast outside onballers in general, we only have Walsh. So we need another and we need them to be mid 20s, no older. Smith will be this but will cut his teeth on a flank and could possibly remain there.
Wingmen, could be stronger and younger depending who comes through.
Tall forwards, both are the same age and there is only two. So quantity and age demographic aren't good.
Rucks we are alright, right numbers, all AFL ready and good mix of ages.
Small forwards, too many, age demographic is good, quality questionable. Will cut back in coming years.
Key defenders, age demographic and quality is great, shame about O'Farrell's injury but long term things are good.
Smaller defenders, age demographic has been fixed nicely through the draft by our recruiters and quality looks good.

To summarise our issues are: Age demographic and number of tall forwards; quality of our wingmen; lack of quick onballers; lack of quality small forwards and to a minor extent, wings. Perhaps Chesser is for the wing and Smith could easily play there at a high level.

Carlton will want to fix most of these issues with the Charlie Curnow trade. Walters, Butters and one of the mentioned Collingwood forwards coming in fixes two of our main issues if that is possible. We should have currency from the Silvagni and/or DeKoning compencation to target the other areas.

I keep saying it, but we are not far away from becoming a contender for the top 4. IF we have a killer trade period and it all works out then here we come, back into finals with a team that is a great mix of youth, prime and senior age players.

Sydney/Gold Coast: “Hi, we’re interested in buying your house.”

Carlton: “It’s not on the market ... but I’m listening. What’s your offer?”

Sydney/Gold Coast: “Just market value.”

Point being, as soon as it’s officially listed, the only offers coming in are at market value.

Our Future 1st + TDK compo, for 2 or 4 + some assortment of 2nd and 3rd rounders to help match the Dean and Walker bids. There's no way we'll be using our future 1st next year (Cody bid), so we may as well trade it into this years draft. Lindsay or Duursma + Dean would be a dream result.
