It’s not about getting excited over these names. It’s about building further depth and I’d say with the view of someone like Buku or Chesser to make a claim for best 23 on a consistent basis by lifting another level or gear. Chol for me is a great example of late.

• Buku challenges Kemp if forward. Or can provide depth as a 3rd Def tall.
• Chesser challenges Acres, Ollie and provides more width on a wing instead of needing to play a 33yo Haynes as a winger, pulling him from his backline role he’s playing great in.
• CJ provides more zip at HB, and whilst it’s debatable around his smarts, we are looking for speed and a good distributor that isn’t an aging Newman.
• Reidy provides challenge to Pitto and HOK, allowing HOK to keep developing and making him accountable to warrant games, not just walk up into them.

I like the Chesser and Buku pursuits. Reidy makes sense. Not an advocate for CJ, but we do need HB depth if it’s not him. Add hopefully Dean and Ison to that somehow to the first three and also see how Curnows situation pans out. We need to replace the lost experience. Lord, Moir, Wilson, Jagga etc. get a preseason with senior games in the locker now. I can see what the List Management team is maybe trying to do. But they need to really nail it with some key figures and experience gone.

Twice mentioned through year by Dimma when approaching return that he was absolutely in contention to come straight back to best 22. “A player not recognised outside our four walls, but is so very important to us”

Was the fourth selection behind Walter, Read and Rogers, but I am certain (and I think Dimma is too) that he will be the best of them.

It's interesting that Buku seems preferred over CJ despite them both being about the same age and CJ having had by far the better career to date. They play different positions so you can't really compare stats but CJ miles ahead in almost all categories.

Not suggested by you but as for trading Gov and Acres, that's hardly going to shift the tacho any great degree.

Buku comes in as a third tall for me.
CJ is more a HBF or winger if need be. Different needs. And we need both.
We lose JSOS, potentially Gov, an untried Lemmey and Kemp coming back from a long term injury where it’s a crapshoot how he returns. Let’s not even talk about Charlie also in the mix.
Buku makes sense, and every Doggies fan I know says they’d love to have seen more of him.

CJ is acquired for zip, run and carry. I won’t be upset if we got him. Not annoyed if we miss out. But addresses the need to get some more of that off half-back to create more rebound and better transition which we struggled with in 2025. Saad aging, Doc retired, Newman aging, Wilson and Charleson we will wait and see. Hollands needs to be released to a wing eventually imo. We need more options there with zip, carry and good distribution

We need both types. Not the same player.

Chesser shouldn’t be much above that, will depend on if Eagles play dirty or not. We seem to have a decent trading relationship with them.

CJ and Buku are tough to put a value on for different reasons. Can’t imagine either cost a pick within the top 30 but both are contracted and the draft is shit. A F2 wouldn’t surprise me.

I think we’ll be okay. Only gets tough when Butters nominates.

There’s not a single club in the competition that would give up a meaningful trade asset for Mitch McGovern. 31, injury prone, out of contract and quite frankly not that good.

Acres would have a few suitors, maybe an early third rounder, but I also think he has a role to play at Carlton yet. We can’t lose too much experience and if nothing else he is a reliable senior body.

Acres is 29 and statistically one of the 5 worst kicks in the AFL. Has zero trade value whatsoever.

Then we'll revisit the Gold Coast in 12 months when one of the two (Read and Walters) are dissatisfied with their limited opportunities as you can't possibly play Curnow, King, Read AND Walters together.

The verbal commitment means nothing when there's other anglee you can pursue that gets the job done just as effectively

They'll be even more reluctant on Humphrey than they will Walter...

Curnow kicks twice as many goals as him next year comfortably, they are also bringing in Uwland who is basically GC version of Gulden, and i think they get more out of that combo than of Humphrey/Uwland.

Jiath would be a solid replacement for McGovern, but if we're trading a future 2nd I'd want some other favourable picks swaps involved.
