Look, GW said our aim this off season is to add depth and it looks like we’re doing that with Chesser, Khamis, CJ etc. Better to have these ‘plug and play’ players that can come in and do a job than having to bring in young, underdeveloped kids. It worked for us last year with Haynes and Frankie (eventually). Even Lewis Young came in and played some decent footy when needed.
I’m sure GW, Austin and the rest of the crew know what they’re doing a lot more than us armchair experts.

Not like it hasn't been done or tried before either. It's just that the success rate isn't great so of those we bring in not all will work out.
For every Frank Evans there's an Alex Fasolo.
The hope is that from now they get a better strike rate

True, but I have more faith in current list management dept now than the SOS era.
Hence why barely any players from 2015-19 are left on our list.

Not just those players, we also have:

Charlie requesting a trade
Gov cracking the shits and potentially leaving
Reports that Motlop wasn't happy with the contract offer
Lij told to look elsewhere
Binns another one

Also, one of those FAs was seen as someone who would've been most loyal to the club...

Fwiw, I really don't mind it being an exodus... players have been entitled, not meeting standards and are now rightly being told to **** off if they can't, or are unwilling to commit.

All with their reasons, standard play;
Gov & Motlop not happy = look in the mirror vs your own performances - down to your market rate fellas, the overpaying is over (hopefully).
Lij on his own conduct
Binns for opportunity (like plenty of others in the league)

Chuck = ??? Would like to know but seemingly the shift in group-think may not be for him.

Chesser better than many here give him credit for...

He could be the steal of this trade period.

Easily an upgrade on any winger we have and has the size to go into the midfield.

Had a meniscus tear in his draft year early in the season or would have been top 10 (top 5 in some peoples eyes).

Has the running capacity of Ollie, but unlike Ollie is a beautiful kick, strong overhead, has genuine speed and class.

It’s not about getting excited over these names. It’s about building further depth and I’d say with the view of someone like Buku or Chesser to make a claim for best 23 on a consistent basis by lifting another level or gear. Chol for me is a great example of late.

  • Buku challenges Kemp if forward. Or can provide depth as a 3rd Def tall.
  • Chesser challenges Acres, Ollie and provides more width on a wing instead of needing to play a 33yo Haynes as a winger, pulling him from his backline role he’s playing great in.
  • CJ provides more zip at HB, and whilst it’s debatable around his smarts, we are looking for speed and a good distributor that isn’t an aging Newman.
  • Reidy provides challenge to Pitto and HOK, allowing HOK to keep developing and making him accountable to warrant games, not just walk up into them.

I like the Chesser and Buku pursuits. Reidy makes sense. Not an advocate for CJ, but we do need HB depth if it’s not him. Add hopefully Dean and Ison to that somehow to the first three and also see how Curnows situation pans out. We need to replace the lost experience. Lord, Moir, Wilson, Jagga etc. get a preseason with senior games in the locker now. I can see what the List Management team is maybe trying to do. But they need to really nail it with some key figures and experience gone.
Everyone on here carried on last year about losing too much depth. This year depth coming in, nah don't want them 🤦

Wow sounds very promising!

For all the talk of Walter and Read being off limits, what of Ben King? They'd be rooted without him and no doubt want CC to partner him.

But as a pre agent... maybe they'd bite at King and a FF for Charlie? Probably not.

To be honest I'm surprised there hasn't been more talk of this. It actually makes the most sense out of all the crazy hypotheticals. Only talk has been is that King is keen to stay but you would think the suns would need an answer on what he wants to do long term otherwise trading as a pre agent when curnow is available is a no brainer for mine.

Both GCS and Sydney would consider themselves pushing for top 4 next year if they got Charlie.. I can't see them trading players unless it was steak knives or someone not getting a game, such as Walter.

I honestly think it CC goes, it would be for 2x 1st rounders or Walter + 1st rounder.

If we get 2x, I wouldn't be opposed to trading one for someone who can step into our 22.. or if we can turn Charlie into Butters, then that's a win IMO.

Yes thanks to Ben King. We would basically be getting a CC type in a trade for CC.

I take your point, but I still don’t believe Essendon will bid. They’ve got too much skin in the game with their F/S and academy prospects, so it makes more sense for them to maintain goodwill.

That said, they were pressured last year over Kako by Melbourne and St Kilda, so it’s possible there’s still some residual frustration from that.

Still, I get the sense there’s a sort of pseudo-alliance with Essendon, given both clubs’ current circumstances and the shared feeling of being hard done by the AFL’s shifting goalposts (priority picks in 2006, potential bidding changes in 2027).

Or they bid because they last thing they want is a massive outcry about Carlton getting a top 10 draftee for a couple of picks in the 20s. Us paying up for Dean might mean the AFL are less inclined to pull some bullshit change out their arse next year.

or it may vindicate whatever the AFL do for 2026, which I assume will be announced first week after GF

He'd be a good foil to McKay as more of a stay at home target who can get it through the big sticks. McKay can then roam a bit more as well as being a key target (without the sole responsibility).

If we don't ask the question, I'd be disappointed. If King is remotely keen to come back to VIC in his career - now might be the time.

Given Charlie's value is above King (arguably) and they want Charles, I'd ask for more - like Flanders or a FF.

But as I said, not sure it'd be an option.

Also - Rugged Blue Bagger I thought someone debunked the Fritsch talk a month ago in the No Discussion Thread?

Yeah, definitely agree with you. I am not bummed about any of them leaving.

I want a list full of players who want to be here.
