Its what I say all the time on here. The Brownlow is an opinion award, judged by the umpires. The AFLMVP is an opinion award judged by the players and the AFLCA Coaches Award is an opinion award judged by the coaches.

All 3 awards are "Opinion Awards" as is the All Australians too - judged by the selectors in their opinion.

The only individual awards not based on opinion is the Coleman medal.

Was there some controversy about the coaches award this year? And one coaches infatuation with his own player in particular?

Jesus can we have another Carlton supporter gloat about Nick not winning, Rowell had great year, I don't think Nick had a dominant year so congrats to Rowell. But Carlton seriously I congratulate you for having multiple Brownlow medallists in last 30yrs for no flags, vs our 1 Brownlow medallist well done. And again well done to Rowell I am sure GC will win a flag before Carlton do, but hopefully Carlton can take joy in another Brownlow night.

Naicos consistency is Ablett Jr like. He will get a brownlow or 2 still. He's got 15 years left.

Ashcroft is a different type of player. He's like specialist. Call him to clean things up when the car goes over the bump and you accidentally pull the trigger and blow Mopsy's brains out.

Every year umpires prove that they have a specific type of player in mind when giving out votes.

They always go with the explosive contested players and pay more attention to ball winning than ball use. This isn’t to say that guys like Rowell are poor users, just that it’s not their main strength.

If you can break a tackle with speed and release any kind of long kick or handball you’re basically born on third base with umpires.

Cripps, Fyfe, Dangerfield, Neale, Dusty. Even going back further with Swan and Judd.

Look at Cripps and Warner this year, both terrible by their standards and they poll around 20 each.

Biggest WTF in Brownlow history is Bont not having multiples because he can do it all. Breaks packs and is a better kick than all of the above.

I know you are talking about Rowell over Daicos but even the NWM over Viney game can be seen through this lens. Another game I noticed was a little weird was Hawthorn's win over North Melbourne. Hawthorn were 100 points up before putting the cue in the rack to 'only' win by 85. Gunston had a career high 7 goals in a dominant game and didn't get a vote. LDU picked up 28 disposals but had 7 clangers and 8 turnovers and got votes. I think the above lens of loving explosive contested players but ignoring ball use (and game situation) can be explained here too.
