Rowell got 3 votes for 16 and 18 disposal games with out huge clearance numbers

This is the big issue and has been for the last 4-5 years and wouldn't surprise me if there are some more betting scandals coming out in a few years time like 2021
And in those games he had 10 or so clangers

I started following VFL in the 80's. Before that I used to watch soccer in Europe. This and the AA always seemed dumb to me.

Was better in the 70's and before?
It's fair to say the voting is far more analysed now than it was 70s and 80s
But there was always surprise winners (which doesn't necessarily mean undeserving) and head scratching votes awarded for questionable performances

Viney had a decent game but what does best on ground mean? Someone who literally wins the game off their own boot surely had the biggest impact.
Yep,

Atkins led the league for tackles yet only had 3 total votes and didn't get a single 1 for his 17 tackle effort against the tigers in r17

Nick Daicos was good but he had a quiet period there for a bit. Rowell is a deserving winner. People need to keep their emotions in check. Daicos' issue was that votes were being taken off him by Collingwood players - Josh took some off him. Same with Brayshaw....took votes off Serong. Go back and watch the games, you'll see why Rowell won it. Look at the other awards too - Rowell was thereabouts also. I reckon his tackling was a feature too...averaged roughly 8 tackles per game...pretty good.

I have no issue with Rowell winning it. I dont think Daicos was robbed.

I'd really like to see the umpires sole focus be on applying the rules to the game they are officiating, rather than thinking and worrying about who is the first, second and third best player on the ground.
100%
It’s ridiculous and just adds another layer of stress to the umpires jobs, which is already borderline untenable

Give the votes job to someone sitting in the stands and watching the whole game play out

I don't understand why the umpires are considered the best judge of play, or why a national competition has its highest individual honour named after a fellow who was only involved in the game in one state rather than all (and died more than 100 years ago so he has no modern relevance).

It's time the Leigh Matthews Trophy is given the esteem given to the Brownlow until now. The players are a better judge of their peers than umpires are, Leigh Matthews has relevance to the modern game, and he helped grow Australian Rules in the state where it was least popular at the time. It's the superior award in my mind.

Formula:

1. Played 20+ games
2. Top 10 club
3. 26+ disposals avg
and
4. Leads free kicks from the above list.

Interesting...

How far have you gone back with this, and how often is the formula providing the winner out of those years? I do think you might be onto something here.

I have no issue with Rowell winning. Both Nick and Matt got votes where the didn’t deserve. That needs to be addressed

How can anyone begrudge Rowell winning, absolute contested ball beast. Bottom line is you play your best players on the ball because that’s where the game is won, that’s why midfielders win it. I know it’s hard to cop but it doesn’t have to be some VIC media darling.

The Matthews trophy is a farce.
Players have admitted they dont watch footy and vote based on vibe. Players have also admitted that they have conspired with their voting to give their teammates the best chance to win

You know when the AFL comes out and says an umpiring decision was clearly wrong, I wonder if they’ll do that for the Nas/Viney votes
Gonna play devil's advocate here...

Viney had 20 touches and 16 tackles and his team was in front by nearly 10 goals with about 19 minutes left in the game.

NW-M had about 25 touches and had kicked 2, but as his team was down by 10 goals, it's not a stretch to say that most of his efforts had had minimal impact on the game.

If he didn't kicked 2 in the final 9 seconds and St Kilda didn't win - would it have been that outrageous for Viney's game to be considered better?

So it just highlights the fact that different people value different things.

Some people may think that having lots of touches but no impact on the outcome of the game is great. Others may consider kicking 2 in a minute to ice the game as being more valuable that anything that occurred in the 99 minutes prior.

FWIW, I think it's a good thing that different people have different perspectives and value different things in footy.

But what bothers me is that umpires (and anyone giving out 3-2-1's for that matter) don't seem to value anything other than ball winning midfielders.

For example, I would have given the Norm Smith to Harris Andrews last year, and I would have had Blicavs in my votes on Friday night.

People would have have thought I was crazy, but I value impact on the game at critical moments very highly. And I'm not even talking about statistical impact. The intangible stuff that Blicavs was doing to negate Meek's influence was immense!

I don’t think any rational person would say Daicos was hard done by for his own count. He got a couple of fortunate ones early (eg Carlton round 4) and equally was probably a bit stiff to only get 1s in a couple of others. Overall about right.

People are rightly scrutinising Rowell’s total though. If he had high 20s/low 30s (which is still a ****ing awesome season btw) nobody would really be batting an eyelid. But 39 is insane much like Cripps’ 45 last year.
