I cant see us trading a single player to the Saints that they would want and we would be open to giving. Some of the names mentioned are Richards (LOL) or Sanders + Freijah. I get it that they want something of value but I cant see us giving up a decent player when our goal is to top up and win a flag. Its a unique position as the saints are clearly trying to have a crack at finals next year by "topping up" rather than a rebuild of selling off a good player for picks. Just cant see how this trade gets done

Any chance of a community note saying much the same about VDM or McNeil? Player’s who have much worse directed at them and more often than Gardner has ever had.
Knock yourself out Norm...

Gardner was the flavour of the day, but yes, at other times, everything I said about Gardner could also apply to VDM and McNeil.

We want Flanders to nominate the Saints too. Would give them another $850 - $900k salary to fit into the books and the need to appease the Suns in trade, may help open the door in a Wilkie trade.

Yeah, but, haven't you heard? The Saints have unlimited cash and Rossco has already flagged an interest in Geelong style third party deals, so Wilkie could be on $2 mil a year at the Saints by the time it's all done.

I agree. It's terrible.
FWIW Gardner had his family tracked down on social media so people would abuse them after he shut his social media down. Deplorable stuff.
What a deranged bunch sport fans can be! People should get AFL match bans for that kind of behaviour.

He'll be a restricted free agent so they'll be able to force a trade if they don't think the compensation is enough

They'll probably get slightly more this year sure, but I'd rather have an extra 12 months trying to get him to re-sign. He's a club changing player, I'd rather risk losing him for nothing than trading him early and not giving myself every chance of keeping him

There has been players in the past that have requested trades/didn't want to re-sign/wanted out only to sign long term contracts not long after, Kozzie Pickett just this season being one of them. Not a totally unique situation. Think Port would be dumb to trade him

In saying that, we should be doing everything we can to try and get him this season

That trade thread and their board are hilarious, like it's flipped from middle aged men hypothesizing about trades to them actually thinking they're at the negotiating table.

The need to constantly shit on the Dogs as an inferior team is also very amusing. Must have forgotten which team they go for.

Port are matching any offer though ala GWS with Jezza. However should Butters come to them and ask for a trade they will do it.

Personally, I would have Bont move in next door to Zak. Actually just have him move in. Right in his back pocket. Give him a share in Arthur's. Give him Barkers. Whatever it takes.

If it was me I'd offer this year's first, next year's first, future 2nd and Riley garcia.

It's entitlement.

Sport is just one of the ways you see it rear its ugly head.

The people bagging Gards are the same people you see at the shops trying to return a 'No Return' discount item, and berating the poor shop attendant when they refuse.

Quite the conundrum for Port really. The only way they get something remotely close to a reasonable free agency compensation for Butters is to finish bottom 3 next year.

The one thing stopping them from doing that is having Butters in the team.
Can’t see compo being a factor. They’d get a better return trading this year or matching any bid and forcing a trade next year.

In terms of Wilkey, I would think that Saints are weighing up the fact he is 30, won’t be around for their next serious premiership challenge, and they could get something good for him while he is still under contract.

Wilkey has probably told the Saints he is open to a trade, if the Saints are satisfied, but he won’t go public until then.

Bulldogs, have a number of irons in the fire, Buku, Marra, Robertson, Budarick and potentially a long shot in Butters for this year. They would be working on how they tie this together.

I think the phones will be getting a workout, but we won’t know anything until trade week.
