I agree in part.I think a player can show in 5mns if he has “it”.But having “it” doesn’t necessarily mean they will go on with it.
Players seem to be emerging much quicker these days.
Reid at Freo,Shanahan,Wiz etc. Better training, diet, etc
But as you say some take years and are a slow burn.
I look at a side as how I think it will end up.
I have Greco HEd Hough at f/b
Ginbey,Starcevich,Macarthy,Boas h/bs
Shanahan, Waterman as key forwards.
HR,Hewett,Gross as followers
AR as ruck.
There are probably B- players around at the moment who could perform better in some of those spots but they are not the future.
We should get games into our futures.
Baker,Graham,Duggan etc fill the gaps till we draft more.
I’m positive about our future and I don’t think it’s 5-6 years away.
If we nail this draft and the next and get some experience around our youth, I expect we will see a decent progression 2027/2028 finals.

All of the guys you’ve named have had better games at AFL level than Devs best. What has Dev proven exactly?
No they haven't... They all should have been delist candidates. They were garbage at AFL level... And mediocre at wafl level as well

In regards to Dev he was awesome at VFL level and because of opportunity wasn't able to crack into Brisbane's ones

Serious question as I can't bring myself to follow Melbourne closely at all: what the **** happened for the trac relationship to be this cooked? I know the injury management stuff but surely that isn't it?

If we can add Van Rooyen in the draft as a ruck prospect next year, while finding a mature age stop gap as well, then add Warner the following year. We'd be set for finals in 2028.

Yep that it is. Specifically, culturally, how he was treated vs how Oliver was treated. Olivers poisonous behaviour....arms wrapped around him. Trac in hospital with ruptured organs and in ICU, crickets.

Devens best game at afl level is likely 17, 2 goals, 2 tackles. He turned 24 this year.

Dewar had games of 27d and 20 and 2 this year as a 21yo.

Hutch has had 24 and a goal and is younger than Dev.

Hall has had games of 21d, 20d and 19d and a goal as a 20yo.

Despite being 24 and on a list for 6 years, Robertson has never cracked 20 disposals at AFL level.

"Start of second.."

Rather than

"End of first.."

Would've sounded and gone down much better with everyone, bit annoying the AFL couldn't get that terminology right when it's the exact same pick.
Out of interest is it though? With end of first compensation picks for J Silvagni and possibly Draper, does our EOF pick go before theirs based on ladder position, or does it automatically go after as its an assistance pick?

It’s not though. Band 2 FA compensation is end of 1st round so those picks would go ahead of our assistance. I’m guessing end of round one means it stays as the pick after Brisbanes.

I don’t rate him and I don’t want him but he ain’t playing alongside a bunch of spuds each week , probably doesn’t get the time and chance as much as those blokes have had.

Agree with Van Rooyen in the draft next, we need another prospect to develop and just so happens that Van Rooyen in 2026 and Walsh in 2027 are WA products and either will be excellent picks.
After we nail the draft in 2025/26, the OOC/FA group we should be targeting in 2027 will be Warner/Rivers/N Martin/Garcia to start imo.
That team would take us deep in finals!

The highlight of his putrid career was 15 posessions, once in the seniors.

In that respect, he'll fit right in at WCE with our retirement fund for players that are past it.

Picks 1,2,15,19,20 & 33 in any other year would be incredible and list/rebuild defining.

It's bizarre just how bad the draft hand becomes after free agency, academy & father son dilution, and further compounded by the shallow talent pool.
Can someone please summarise our likely picks factoring in Free Agency Compo and Academy picks (to the best of our knowledge). What am I missing in the list below on Compo and Academy picks:

  • Zeke Uwland
  • Dylan Patterson
  • Dan Annabelle
  • Oscar Allen Compo
  • Sam Draper Compo
  • TDK Compo

Which will leave us likely with picks 1, 2, 21, 25, 26 and 39.

I'm sure I'm missing something..

Adam Sweid? Max King?

Right now Dev would struggle to make our fully fit team.

He would offer barely more than Hall while having less development in him.

The only reason to grab him would be to strengthen our depth and WAFL team.
Mate you are delusional

Dev would have played every game available the last 2 years and been right in the mix next season .

We don't even have 1 rotation of mids let alone the 2 rotations required to be a contending team

Marshall leapfrogged him as a 19yo and had two games 20+ out of 5.

Dewar is an outside player alongside a bunch of spuds, if anything that makes it more difficult.

At some point people have to stop finding excuses for Dev and accept he’s a good state player and nothing more.

Makes a difference for the draftee though doesn't it? First round is a minimum 3 year contract? 2nd round is 2?

I’m taking all of Reid, Graham, Yeo, Kelly, Hough, Hewett and likely Hall before him as centre bounce mids next year.

I don’t expect a response to this as you never got back to me about Hewetts best game at AFL being better than Drapers best at SANFL but you believing they would’ve had a similar impact this year.

I feel dev is actually an inside mid so he is ahead of Graham.

Hewett still isn't a lock to make it but trending ok

Kelly is a crab and on the way out but still offers more when he can be arsed

Yeo has already been rumoured to be playing HBF to get him on the park in any meaningful way .

Hough had that 1 great game vs Collingwood but the whole midfield experiment was a mixed bag

Hall is very much like for like with dev

Not sure that's true. We now have pick 19 and the next end of round1 pick should be 20.
Pretty sure that's how it worked for North, which was then used to trade up.
