Would of leaked by now, I'll bet you anything we'll being in Young and Starc only. Don't pretend or hope for anything more
Pretty hard to attractdecent players to a one-win team, no matter how much you offer.

Or should we just offer $1.2m p.a for Dev, just so we 'got someone'?

Not enough, Money talks. For example Neale, it's know his wife wants to return home to Perth. Offer him $5 million for 3 years. He ain't getting that in Brisbane. We've got cap space and won't upset the group. Paying a daul brownlow medallist overs like that

Steele is another, players want money over success. 4 years at $900k gets him to Perth
Yep, our midfield in terms of athletics was that bad last year half the teams lapped us and we trailed the 17th team by some margin in a 1500m race.

Last year we should have been way more pro active as well

You see the Dogs going after young players because they have a few ageing midfielders not for the now but in the short /medium term future.

So how is our midfield getting better next year?

So far heavily linked with

Young (KPD)
Butler (Forward)
Starc (Def)
Murdock (mid 20 Wafl)
Some VFL kid 23 old

Our midfield will get smashed again just like this year. The administration team needs to be sacked. Another year the don't address this. Money talks - obviously the offer to Warner and others wasn't enough.

A bunch of kids ain't going to help next year.

At least Beagles should be competitive at least
Starc and Dev can also play midfield. Would be better than Murdock.

So they are still chasing McVee even though he nominated Fremantle. Pyke is obviously planning to make a better offer to Melbourne. Freo have done this to us too in the past. But i think there should be an understanding between the two clubs that once a player has nominated the other club steps away. All they do is end up bidding up the trade price of players coming back to WA. It would be in the longer term interests of both clubs to not be bidding against each other.
There is a bit of an opportunity here though with the Petracca looming exit, Melbourne will want a high pick - and we hold (or are about to hold) a couple that are no doubt of interest.

Pick 2 for Petracca and McVee I think Melb would bite our hand off. Obviously Petracca is going elsewhere - so the question is what is his value (with McVee as the steak knives).

If he wants Adelaide, then it is Curtin. I don’t think they would do it, but we can ask.

GC obviously Walter, albeit he is less of a need (and has less runs on the board).

Both are unlikely, but you never know.

EAGLES' DRAFT HAND GROWS

WEST Coast's end-of-first round pick handed to them by the AFL is expected to be put on the table in a trade for Brandon Starcevich if the Eagles proceed with their interest in the Brisbane premiership gun.

The club has long held interest in Starcevich as a free agent and had discussed with the League an exemption to bring in a free agent without diluting their free agency compensation pick.

The AFL knocked that back but by giving the end-of-first round pick have opened the door for West Coast to use the pick to execute a trade for Starcevich, who performed strongly in Saturday's Grand Final before being ruled out after a head knock in the third term.

The Eagles will do their work this week on the effects of the knock to Starcevich, which came after a series of concussions over the past 18 months. They have had a longer-term offer on the table for him, with Brisbane also tabling a deal to keep the two-time premiership player.

The pick given by the AFL has no caveat it must be traded, with the extra rookie picks to remain for the next three seasons and likely be in some part filled by experienced players through the rookie draft or pre-season supplemental period.

Yuck

Yep agree. Bidding on an academy-linked player creates a heap of animosity and really benefits all the other clubs more.
You'd only do it if the player was a steal at your pick (Daicos at 4, etc.)
I think this is silly.

If the player is worth the pick they should be bid on. Firstly need to remove the cash reward for being pick one as it's another thing potentially manipulating the bidding system.

Secondly, the animosity, Clubs interview players all the time. Why are they not mentioning how the academy bidding system works, how if they bid and their bid fails then the next selection isn't a negative but is also a positive that you have been drafted, we have successfully forced the other clubs hand (could be a rival).

Third idea, is during the interviews ask the player how they would feel if selected after a failed bid. If anything a lot of these interviews are to find out the mentality of players and how they adapt to situations. I hope this is already being asked.

How is Barnett still on our list, one of the worst players we have recruited last 20 years, literally shown nothing his whole time with us.
Woosh apparently said in a recent interview they liked what they saw in the second half of the season.

I'd rather give him one more year to try and get it right. The extra rookie spots allow us to take that punt.

there easy to please may have had 1 good game in WAFL showed bugger all most of the year, prefer to give his spot to another player

IF we give up anything more than Hawks second, or whatever we get back for Chesser i'll be a little uspet.

Hopefully at least the WAFL side can get stronger with those 4 rookie spots

Do we use them on yoof or senior fill ins to help the now but can play a role in AFL side if needed?
Pick the three best mids in the state leagues mid 20's age and keep one for whichever nga player you choose.

I don't think for one second the Eagles will offer up a first rounder for Starc. Comes across as stupid media crap.

I agree, I see Starc as a 'nice to have' at the right price, but seems a bit risky for one of our 1st rd draft picks going the other way. Would be fine with Starc and Dev for the AFL assistance pick though.

Whilst I do understand the thought process, there clearly isn't another likely tall on the market we could take to like for like replace him. There's a chance however low he'll come good, he's already contracted.

Maybe, but I thought that too re Baker last season. We clearly drank the bath water.
Pyke's comments this morning are a little too keen for my liking.

Big guys take time, we have kept a lot of players much worse than Barnett which had a very low ceiling.

How long has it taken Harry Edwards to finally play some good footy?

Experience plus confidence can make a player turn the corner quickly.

I don't get it ...So we go after Cameron ...offer him a contract and get knocked back ..so is that it for the rucks we keep Barnett because we can't get anyone else ??

Like earlier on we were looking for a new ruck...but not atm?? and if that is the case CDT must be a certainty to be drafted by us with pick 1 or 2 ?...correct ?

CDT isn't a ruck. He's a tall utility who can compete in the ruck at best.

Barnett was a dominant ruck. We've ascertained his ability over his peers was his size.
His issue seems to be workrate and decison making.
What is Barnett now?

A tall utility I suppose.

I still think and I'll die in this hill, our best ruckman the next decade is already on the list.

Don Pyke just on air with Duffield mentioned the pick from the league and hawks pick could be packaged up for "say pick 7". Didn't say this is what we are doing, but they are thinking about what they can do. Be surpised based on the conversation if we use Hawks or our end of first on Starcevich
I'd be surprised if he threw a random number out there without at least a thought process.

Interesting.

Is there any way our 2nd round pick is not the first pick on Day 2?

If not, then this pick is no doubt more valuable than our assistance pick given there would be a number of clubs who have their eyes on a player that slid or they wanted?
