I've heard them explain this before, they invite them in let them get photos and have a beer. Get buddy buddy with em them kick em out and do a private one and they've apparently gotten away with a few things because of that. Journos are all friendless nerds who feel included and leave them alone

Fwiw, I don't really care that the bounce is gone. The sport needs desperately more umpires, and it's currently very limiting to those who struggle with that aspect.

In reality, all we get now is recalled bounces or bounces that randomly favour one side, anyway. Not going to miss it much.

The problem with the bounce is that they want the umpires to bounce it dead straight when historically the point of it was to add a bit of randomness to the game. Just get rid of the centre circle and let the bounce go wherever.

It's made centre bounce ruck work awful having no bounce. Probably one of the worst parts of the game now. Two guys walking together to stand under it and tip it slightly down sucks. Don't think they can fix it now but they've ruined ruck work

I don't mind 5 on the bench if they drop rotations again. Have as many guys as you want but I miss the days of having players coming on an off as tactical rather than just a ****ing carousel

Apparently they're considering bringing the run up for the rucks back? Would be epic, the old ruck duels with blokes coming in off a 30m sprint were awesome.

They ****ing need to, they were great to watch but also more momentum means the taps can clear the immediate area as well and the ball doesn't just drop straight down, at the moment it's always contained inside the circle

I’d keep the bounce, ditch the centre circle and bring back the run up.

I would also get rid of the rucks nominating - though I get the point that they were trying to remove the third man up and this was the mechanism to do so. But it holds the game up. If a ruck is dawdling over I’d prefer the umpire to just throw it in. Also could be fun to watch the rucks tearing over in some kind of 7 footer sprint race to get to the ball drop.

It's just not a skill that's used anymore and was getting lost with new umpires coming through. This will never get reversed with the art of it dying with the last generation of umpires to do it

I never had seen it at local levels where local 50 year old volunteers with crook backs never used it, so I supposed it's a better reflection of the game at grass roots even though that's not the AFL's motivation at all

That said "Grand Final Opening Throw up" doesn't really sound as exciting
