we should just go after butts as a free agent next year. He will probably go at a premium like Ben McKay

Looks like we are not getting a key defender in the trade. I am pretty sure Jordan Croft has all the attributes to be a topline defender. Height, reach, leap, speed and pedigree. The things he would lack next season is strength and experience.

If a move is planned, I would target Oliver Henry at the cats. He was not getting many games at the cats this season and may be gettable.

I don't mind this idea if he and Geelong were looking to part ways. No guarantee he is in the team round 1 next year, but should come cheap and has shown to be a very dangerous goal kicker in the past. I think his defensive side of the game is his issue, so before people say just slot him in for VDM or McNeil, that won't work. But especially if Cody misses games again next year, Henry is a decent option to buy low on.

Sounds like we pulled out - similar to Tylar Young. Club must rate Buss extremely highly, and are not just saying that to please the fans.
Listening to Regan today, it sounds like JOD and Buss are the long term and we are only pursuing a short-medium term stop gap. This is to reduce the pressure on them, so they can still develop naturally.

Likely third round pick for Marra

Will turn JUH into Will Darcy then. To be honest he's probably the only player we could take that late in the draft who might have a sneaky high ceiling to help us forget about our failed #1 pick...

I thought a straight swap for Budarick would make sense, but maybe GC asking for more or to keep the deals separate.

Just dropping into the Gold Coast trade thread on their board, there doesn't seem to be too much sleep being lost over Budarick's departure. The general view is that we are being sold a bit of a lemon, particularly if we think that he will fill a role as a lockdown defender. Not a great read, if I'm to be honest.

I’ll be disappointed if we lose out to WCE on trading for GC’s pick 6.

We’re trading with the Suns a fair bit this year, make it happen Dogs.

To be fair, we would be s***canning a player leaving our club as well (with a few notable exceptions). Wouldn't expect anything less from them.

Sounds like cope. Fletcher Roberts and Hamling could've been considered lemons but they won us a flag so...

Yes, that's a fair call. Although I wouldn't describe any of their posts as being bitter or vindictive in tone...more observational. I compare it to the Carlton board's reaction to the departure of Kennedy last year, which was pretty much universal regret.

I think the role we will ask Budarick to play, he will be fine in and more than qualified, as well as suiting our system. It's if you want him rebounding a ton and making a lot of the decisions coming out of the back line, or having him isolated as a solo defender close to goal, may be unhappy with the results. He's no world beater, but he is solid and will improve our back mix.

If we are accepting our fate of going into 2026 with the same group of defenders as 2025, we will only have a similar year.

Another wasted year of the best player we’ve ever had.
