In my opinion. That's all any of us can do. Draw an opinion on what you see. Pretty much like your opinion in Lucus Robinson in the grand final pregame.
Sorry that came across more aggressive than I intended and I didn’t really mean you in particular.

Well not really, as I can see Robinson with my own eyes. I can judge his speed in relation to the players around him, how his marking is (very good) how good his hands and centre work is at the bounce (also very good). He is slow as a wet week away from the stoppage though.

The assistants and what exactly they do are unknowns for us. How they work in relation to the senior coach and how they get to stamp their own ideas on the players is murky.

How much of how the forward line functions under Jamie Graham is due to the youth of the players and/or how the players are instructed to move the ball?

The West Coast forwards seemed to function very well under Graham.

Well if he doesn't have any say then he isn't best available (Unless early days Ross is the coach). And if he does have a say, to my eyes at least, he is very slow to react and change things at times and is really very robotic in who, how and when players start or rotate through the midfield. Plus I think he and the rest of the coaches need help with structures. Especially having someone behind the drop of the ball especially down the line and not leaving so many loose oppo players facing goal in the forward 50. Good chance they have a reason for it that I am not conversant with, but at the end of the day it doesn't work so it really doesn't matter if I understand it or not.
I must say the speedy little winger Williams (i think it was) was bloody impressive in that game. I finally got to watch it last night
Don't think Lucus will bring us explosive pace, so we need to find that elsewhere. I am of the opinion that we need a big body that is a natural clearance tap reader and there is a good chance he is that. I'm sure he will be required to kick more once we get him in, but he does set up play very nicely by hand. We would probably love to have him handing off to something skillful on the outside once we get a few more of them, i imagine plus his aerial ability is terrific.

Our forward line is functioning as well as it ever has under Graham.
The leading patterns , separation and blocking for each other is very good.
Our issue is our mid field. We have few midfielders that can carve you up with delivery, perhaps only Young. Our wingmen are a particularly weak component, very few goals and no kicking accuracy into the 50.
We need multiple goals scored by our mids like Brisbane get from Bailey, Neale, Mc Luggage and the Ashcrofts.

I think Graham has done well with with he's been given. Amiss and Bolton aside we've never really invested good picks in the forward line. Reid would perhaps be an exception but I keep hearing the club thinks he's a midfielder.

Comparatively our defence is mostly first and second round draft picks and our midfield rotation the same, although we clearly haven't invested enough in wingers.

We’ve invested as may good picks into the backline as the forward line. Chapman is the only one there we spent a first rounder on.

All our high picks end up in the midfield.

Wingers aren't really drafted, it's more HB's / midfielders that become that role in the AFL.

But we're still using him in defence so my point still remains really. That could change though.
Think the hamstring issues delayed that thought, will be interesting to see where he trains in preseason, but they did mention it when they drafted him, so were willing to expend a first on a winger at the time.

I'm sure this will inevitably go down well with some.

Hahahahaha

Becoming a boys club. Hire a mediocre senior coach because he kicked a goal after the siren for us once, and now this.

Can we hire someone on actual merit? Club is clearly chasing nostalgia rather than a premiership.
It’s probably because those are the only guys we can actually convince to come over to WA tbh

Long interview with Mayne just now on SEN WA. I didn't get many take aways other than he rates our forward mix, and he and Longmuir got on well when Longmuir was backline coach at Collingwood. (Edit...I think it was Bucks he was talking about. I've listened to it twice now and both times drifted off a bit)

Always that it was weird we had a backline development coach and midfield development coach but not a forwards one.

Heard Chris Mayne is highly rated in WAFL circles and IMO the boys club thing doesn't apply when a player/assistant has been away for so long.
