I'll take a 9th next year
18 years ago, we were at 58% all time winning percentage, Geelong were 51%. Now the two clubs are almost even. Next year - probably around half way through the year - we will not be in to top 3 for the first time in over 120 years.

The top few and bottom few look right, but we run into problems when Geelong are ranked higher than clubs with three more flags than them (two in a shorter time span) and Port are considered better than West Coast

Seems crazy Hawthorn aren't above 50%. I knew they were bad early days but they must've been diabolically awful to overrule the consistent success from the 70's on.

Entered in 1925, don't think we even played finals until 1960. It took us until the late 1950s to even beat Collingwood at Victoria Park, for example. I think we actually pulled ahead in terms of wins to losses in 2014-2015, but then having a few poor seasons post that era has put us back in the red.

From 1971 - the Hawks second premiership - the club has a winning record of very close to 60%.
However, in the years from 1925 to 1970 the winning % was only around 32, and from 1925 until our first premiership in 1961 the success rate was only about 26%!

The game has been going for 128 years.
It's not Carlton and Essendon's fault that teams like Richmond have been worse than they are currently for longer than they currently have been.
The criteria you are using is very selective imo. How about including VFA and pre VFA era flags along with the VFL/AFL total?
That would be a better way to gauge things. So that would leave us with something like this Collingwood 16 flags, Essendon 20 flags and Carlton 22 flags.

Not a fan of the approach taken by this ranking system for the reasons Franc de Borges highlighted.
Feel like you have to start with premiership win % (i.e. how many premierships in how many years) and work backwards with the other metrics from there.
Having teams ranked higher than when they have been in the competition longer and won fewer premierships (i.e. less successful) doesn't make sense.

The best indicator of success is a premiership.
There are several teams that win more premierships per average games played, so based on those metrics, if those teams survive as long as Collingwood, they will have more premierships, which to me makes them better clubs.
