We were in for T.Young and Butts too. I’d argue that Derksen is far better prospect than Young and has the potential to be better than Butts. He is at least far more athletic than Butts.

Being stuck behind Buckley, Taylor, Himmelberg and Aleer at GWS is nothing to be sneezed at.

This one is real perplexing to me. The kid is talented, just needs an opportunity.
Then what the **** are we doing? Surely we make a play for him?!

I have zero knowledge of this year's draft but I don't mind this. Have the stones to take the two most suitable players.
Haven’t seen it mentioned but Cal said that we will stay with our current picks in the 2nd round and not looking to move up
I'd say that's most likely scenario if we intend on taking three picks with 25 (590), 26 (561) & 46 (134) (also 64 (0)).
There's a few scenarios that could play out, what we do might depend on how many picks we want to take.

1) Trade the two R2's - on points 25 (590) & 26 (561) = 1,151 points (~ pick 12).
Options could be GC 15 or 18 or Lions 17, but left with one of 15/16/18 and 46 & 64.

Not sure there's a big difference between the mid/late teens and 25 range.
Almost a bit like if you don't get one of Dovaston/Schubert/X Taylor/Farrow, then I question if it's worth it for a late teens pick, but you perhaps guarantee someone in the first 18 available I guess. Is that better than two kids inside 30?

2) Trade all three picks - on points 25, 26 & 46 = 1,285 (~ pick 10). I'm sure that team would want a F3 or F2 too.
Blues 10 or Swans 11 probably unlikely, they'd want a future pick thrown in? GC 15? Left with 10/11/15 & 64.

Swans probably hold that pick for a Curnow and Blues would likely want a F1 and R2/R3 points combo for 10.
You might get a GWS willing to trade 14 and their F1 just as a hypothetical, which beats two R2's and a F2.
I'm not sure I'd give up a F2 given next years draft crop and the changes to F/S rules not completely locked in yet.

3) Use player trades to upgrade any our picks or generate additional picks we can package up
(Maley? Fisher? Phillips? Scott? Duursma? Simpkin? etc.)

Ultimately it might come down to whether two kids at 25 & 26 is better than getting one kid in the teens from trading up.
To get up higher you'd have to give up futures. I wouldn't be against 2027 picks given it's the Tassie draft, but maybe using them to trade into next years crop or for players hopefully is a better idea.

Caleb played all 23 games averaging 26ish touches a game.

Didn't see anyone stepping up to take his place.

Decent return for a 2nd round pick 1st year in a system.

I understand completely if you don't like him, just don't see we had a better option either on our list or as an available option.

I get very frustrated with the destructive criticism when it is not paired with constructive solutions.

We all are frustrated with the past 5 years, just not sure what answers any fan here is offering that would have been better for us.

I certainly don't see how pick 7 this year would change much.

I’d rather play Harvey at half back if he’s retained on the list and with Spargo coming on board it might be the only way for him to get in the side

Its not that I don't like him as he is a pretty capable player, if we got him for a 3rd rounder and played him somewhere where he didn't have to be a defensive liability I would be fine with it. But for pick 3 you would be wanting keidie Coleman as a defensive pickup. Again my criticism is of the trade. You really struggle with criticism of that trade it would appear.

And seriously, peddling out those stats where half were kick ins and the other half went 30m to a 50 50 contests where he should have been dropped or moved up the ground is hardly praise.

It was a shit trade, period.

Go back and look at the ccj trade which was equally as crap, that pick we traded turned out to be max grubowski.

We are just shit recruiters and our list is testament to that.

With Derksen they mentioned on Trade Radio (yes I put myself through it sometimes...and I question my life choices regularly as a consequence) that the Dees went cold after hearing about toe injury issues.

Maybe we've done the same given what happened to poor Keys Junior a few years ago....

It isn't Daniel as much as the ridiculous role he is playing. We need to axe it as it hurts both our defence and offensive transition.

Daniel can't compete one on one, so he plays mostly without an opponent and guards grass. Most teams have a spare defender but they are used as interceptors and to launch counter attacks. Daniel can't do either. Too short and soft to intercept, too slow and can't kick long enough to counterattack. When he gets the ball he slows the game down when he should be speeding it up. Daniel doesn't win his own ball, it gets handed to him. He needs to be an attacking weapon - run twenty and kick it 50 to get it over the back of the opposition while they are setting up. Instead he dithers, crabs and kicks sideways to retain possession. This just lets the opposition set up their press and we get stuck in the back half.

The dogs ditched him from defense because the game has changed and he became a liability. Everybody except Clarko knew this and they would have let him go for a future third or fourth. We overpaid badly and it end up trashing this year's draft hand whilst making us worse on field.

Derkson is an interceptor though... young and Butts are 1-1 FB, thats what we need not so much an interceptor

Any chance we do anything remotely interesting to shift the needle this year?
No.

We don't have currency, we are not an attractive destination and we burnt ourselves last year with the whole Daniel 25 making us trade out pick 3 fiasco meaning we are gonna be gun shy.

We are playing around the edges hoping that there is divine intervention to make something fall our way.

Maybe The Ashcroft brothers yearn the bright lights of Arden St? There's always that come home factor. Watch this space I suppose.

Finished 6th in the B&F. Am I missing something?
