Player Watch #12: Jy Simpkin [Part II] - staying at North in 2026 + won't feature in leadership group as Larkey set to be named captain

Collingwood’s hunt for midfield reinforcement has led them to North Melbourne captain Jy Simpkin.

The Magpies had expressed interest in Melbourne onballer Clayton Oliver, but have now set their sights on Simpkin, who this masthead revealed last month was unhappy with his midfield timeafter finishing the season in a wing role.

Oliver is yet to lodge an official trade request or nominate the Giants, but seems likely to do that in the days ahead.

Simpkin is contracted until the end of the 2029 season, so it would likely take a strong first-round pick to convince the Kangaroos to part with him.

They got no first rounders this year and tho I expect they'll fall a little next year, I wouldn't do it for their 2026 F1 either.

Can't really see how it gets done, unless we can extract someone like Quaynor or McCreery as part of the deal, which is hard to imagine tbh.

Yeah, a lot of risk on their future first, even if they do drop a bit, I agree, losing a player of his experience, it's a tough sell in our situation to be waiting on future picks, think we definitely need a worthwhile experienced player coming back our way to make it work for us, which, as you said, makes it hard to see it getting done.

I would do a straight Quaynor - Simpkin swap.

Or McCreery and their future first for Simpkin and a second.

But these deals are hard to imagine those players accepting, even with the extra money we'd offer them.

I’d say their 2026 F1 and 27 F1 with perhaps a minor pick or two going back to them. Otherwise hold - he’s too valuable.

A Collingwood player won’t come to us.
I don't think they can trade both F1s because they traded their 2025 first rounder for Houston and last year's for Schultz.

Aren’t Geelong proposing to do the same thing with Curnow?
I think under the new system you have to use 2 first round picks every 5 years in the draft.

I forgot the kicker tho - that even tho the Pies used last year's first rounder on Schultz, the AFL have wiped the slate clean, so no trades prior to this year count.

Geelong SovCits can do that, maybe Pies would be allowed to as well if they asked nicely. No way they would do it though. I would trade Simpkins for their '26 R1 pick and run away quickly. Would be worth it just for the lols when one of Jy's loopy hospital handballs to Naicos gets him spifflicated.

Hahah bye bye Jy.

We'll play finals before him. That will be wonderful, won't it?!

Says who? We don't need jack off them. The insane overating of this scrubber is ridiculous.

Yeah yeah he rocks up on time is full club tracksuit, but he's no good.

I can't actually believe Collingwood would want him, they must be desperate.
Pies. So does his family.
Essington, no?
