I’m sure it’s nice for Jy to get the sole captaincy.

And it is great for Sheez to get into the moulding stage. He does deserve whatever path is necessary.

But if Larkey is having a year similar to the last few where he struggles to get into the games, ends up flailing his hands and diving forward with the slightest contact when the ball isn’t coming his way, and jy has too few of those west coast games. I’m not sure where the rest of the ground is going to look for leadership.

I mean I do, it will be Parker - but then we’ve got a situation like the last 3-4 years.

Feel like Parker could have joined Larkey and Sheezel or even Jy tbh.
I agree with this. But sole captain is best, a VC to support Simpkin & Sheezel probably ideal. Either way, you know hea effectively a leader minus the title.

Do you really think Parker and Daniel and Darling need a title to do the job they were brought over to do and are being paid decent money for?
Sort of makes the title of captain redundant if there are three others who are more important leaders on field.

A little disappointed, I was thinking that Simpkins days in the team may be numbered with some of the youngsters coming through, but happy to see McDonald has stood down.

I was hoping Larkey would be given the opportunity to Captain the club for a season or two before handing over to Sheezel, but that doesn't look like it will happen now.
Captaining the club as a full-forward with multiple defenders hanging off you. Mmmm, that'd be a hell of a ballsy move. I think we've found the simplest potential solution for our current leadership situation, especially with the added experience of the recruits, who don't need official titles to exert their influence

Yeah just like when Dangles made Carey Captain back in the olden days. :stern look

You seem to have an overly literal understanding of leadership if you think every young player only looks to the person wearing the captain's armband (that doesn't exist) whenever they face adversity mid game.

How silly of me to think that the bloke appointed as the leader of the playing group should be looked at for guidance and reassurance.

In a good / great team, there should be numerous players that are leaders regardless of title, whether by their actions, directing traffic at stoppages, upholding standards on and off the field, etc.

I thought Xerri was a leader last year for example.

We had a glimpse at how larky is as captain and were taken into the pre-game huddle (vision is somewhere) - my view from that was that firstly he was incredibly impressive, and secondly he came across as a natural leader.

So no player vote this year? I think that’s a good thing.

I like the set up.
Video made it sound like they still took a player vote, but also took input from those around the club so it wasn't strictly on what the players thought.

The year before last larkey kicked more goals than a North forward has since Aaron Edwards Carey

Are you suggesting what I pointed about his game doesn’t exist?
It happened alot last year but not the year before. And imo its why he shouldn't be captain ...

but he rarely struggled to get into games in 2023. Multiple goals kicked in most games (four games where he only kicked one and he didn't score a goal only once.)

Personally don't agree with it, however can understand it.

It's probably too early for Harry and you couldn't block his natural progression with someone else short term.

Jy is every bit a captain on the track, drives standards, one of the hardest workers etc.

I just simply don't see him as an onfield captain from the sense - he's probably in our bottom 7-8 players in our best 22 and needs to be dropped if form demands it from a side as poorly performed as ours, which I'd argue he got to at points last year.

At no point has Clarko dropped the captains, so im not expecting it to start when it's a solo captain.
I largely agree, but I thought the WCE game was a notable exception last year where he really stood up. We don’t win that if he doesn’t play (albeit we arguably shouldn’t have won anyway, with the dubious htb and them kicking 2.13 to 3/4 time.

In his defence, it’s hard to know how badly the concussion affected him last year, but I’d guess it was pretty massive. For me the bigger question is almost “can he fully recover from it?” Very traumatic thing to happen during your job, he’d have to be superman not to be nervous in future games.
