Re: 'Alleged' rumours resurfacing ...

Folks, this is the way things are here.

Posters are responsible for what they post. Moderators can not attest to the accuracy or otherwise of any rumour posted.

Moderators will intervene for a couple of reasons.

1. If a thread is threatening to be derailed because of a post.

2. If invested parties request the removal of material.

None of this draws a conclusion as to the accuracy or otherwise of the original post.

There is no need to further speculate. What will be will be.

Also, you need to remember that this thread like all parts of this forum is bound by the rules of poster conduct. If you want to express skepticism towards a rumour that's fine, but having a crack at posters who are contributors to this forum is simply not on and will be acted upon.

Simply put, don't be a dick.

Thanks all!

Not saying we accept a garbage offer, and the Swans offer is not that.

Do tell, how does Charlie playing VFL for 4 years improve Carlton vs the offer from the Swans?

I know there's emotion attached to it, but need to take a breather and be a bit more realistic.

There are no trades where a star is traded for another star player. It just doesn't happen.

Sydney don't have pick 1... if they did, they wouldn't be including their F1 + Hayward.

We need an F1 out of this trade period at the very least so we can match the Walker bid...

How do you suppose we get that F1 pick by keeping Charlie? I'm listening for an alternative, but I doubt anyone can give one.

We'd also ideally want to get a kid before the Dean bid comes this year... again, the Charlie trade unlocks the ability to do that. What's the alternative?

Hayward is a solid medium forward option. If we get Ainsworth as well, I'm actually keen to see how our forward line will function next year with Harry, HOK, Kemp, Ainsworth, Hayward and Moir...
Seriously? it's not that difficult to work a deal for a F1 for this year's pick11 plus say our F2 for instance.
We did it last year with Hawthorn.

Just on a side note, wasn't it 'convenient' that the AFL slapped Geelong with the ol' lettuce leaf yesterday for breaches, then come out and announce that all clubs can trade their 2025, 2026 and 2027 first round picks regardless of previous trades.

Then in a complete coincidence, Geelong come out the following day and offer 3 first rounders for Charlie, which they weren't able to under the previous rule

nah the main beneficiary of this change is Collingwood (of course).

If this is the common view on this board I think I've walked into the twilight zone.

3 crappy low to mid 20 picks aren't creating any opportunities, certainly not any that's going to get us close to the holy grail, not getting us a grade young talent not getting us Butters or similar.

Yeah. Would these 3 Geelong 1st rounders even get us West Coast’s Pick 2 when combined? So that’s the answer of the true value of the offer. 1 high pick. And CC is worth more than that.

The bias really is that obvious. I wonder what Geelong have got over the AFL to get away with what they do and how dumb are we not to be able to do the same????

They should start adding exit clauses in contracts. But if you opt for that the overall contract value is much lower.

So you can exit after two years of your 6 year contract, but lose various premiums in the contract. Like any rewards for performance etc.
Just a clause that they have to payback any front loading of the deal pro rata. It's how it works in my field albeit totally different industry obviously, but if you take a sign on bonus and leave before the agreed term, you payback pro rata remaining amount of your sign on (pre-tax!)
They will think twice then, given they have prob put a good chunk of it up there nose, a good chunk of it over the bar, and their manager has probably used then as a liquidity option to saddle them up with a debt laden pub venture!

I don't trust anyone, Wright another in the long list of "oh lets trust this guy with everything", if he makes what appears a bad deal, I wont see it as 4D chess, I will just see it as a bad deal.

It’s impossible to know what is or isn’t a bad deal without being inside the four walls. If relationships are completely screwed and he won’t return day 1 of pre season well the Geelong deal is better than nothing. If he is still on good terms with the coaches and playing group, keen to buy in and his knee has recovered perfectly, anything less than Errol Gulden is a fail.

We can only judge a player on their talent and what we think they can produce on field. The club is working with a lot more than us.

Who does he need to worry about?

In this situation its probably hinted at his teammates, but on a broader scale, the coach and board

Most teammates can understand when a player is looking for new opportunities, whether it’s due to family, playing time or financial reasons. But when a player's performance and attitude have been well below par—especially from someone who’s supposed to be a leader—it’s hard to expect understanding or respect.

He’s a very highly paid individual who, after securing that contract, spent almost two years on the sidelines. Given that, you'd expect a bit more perspective and gratitude. Instead, we saw a lack of effort and engagement that’s probably very frustrating for his teammates.

He needs to worry less about what the club isn’t doing for him, and more about what he is doing—or not doing—for the club. Right now, it feels like he’s stepping away when things get difficult, after everyone backed him through poor decisions, inconsistent form, and both avoidable and unavoidable injuries.

Withdrawing from your teammates, especially when they’ve sacrificed their own roles for the “Charlie show” and supported you through everything, doesn’t send a great message. It’s not just about the football—it’s about the attitude, and right now it doesn’t reflect leadership.

I’m not writing him off - hes a Blues player at the end of the day who has brought great joy to the club at times -but he definitely has some growing up to do.

I don’t believe his relationship with Carlton or those at the club is nearly as bad as the media or his management suggests. He certainly wants out but it isn’t untenable. We could hold him for another year and still get at least 2 first rounders in 12 months time.

And yeah, Clarry is a rotten example who has other issues, but have a look at his best mate Trac. Coincidentally also with Connor Sports Management who did the same shit through last years trade period pushing for a move. Fast forward 12 months time, just finished 2nd in the B&F, still loved by fans, still in contract, and the Dees are still looking at 2 first round picks for him if he does get a move again.

We’ve got to trust Wright and his judgement and I think he will hold him if he isn’t satisfied. Or you accept the overs from Sydney and give him the choice. Is it really about getting out of Carlton or is it about getting down to Torquay more often with his new buddy Baz? Call his bluff.

Cheers - I don’t believe it’s untenable either, but the insta posts today are certainly a bad look, and a bit of an escalation.

I suppose I just think that we aren’t a realistic shot to win a flag with him next year. If we trade him next year anyway, then what good has it done us to keep him? Especially if the two firsts come from Geelong - they are the same two firsts that we would be getting this year, so we’ve lost a pick this year that would help with Dean and Ison. Get the picks in now. We don't have to use them - we take them to the market and see what we can turn them into.

The demons might do alright with Trac. We will have to see what they make it out with, and how much of his contract they hold. Clarry has certainly made his value plummet - completely unprofessional on and off field. I could have pointed to Petty instead. Went from a very high pick offered to no interest a year later. Daniher could have netted * two firsts from Sydney, a year later they were interested and they just got the compo pick instead. Point was that circumstances change.

I trust Wright (and Austin FWIW) to do what’s in the best interest of the club, and not to take the first offer in front of them. This still has a long way to play out, and we’re already at a worst case being keep him or get three firsts. However it shakes out, we’re going to do fine.

but theres good surfing in Perth. Pick 2 howdy
Absolutely no surf in Perth!!! If you're gonna use the "Charlie wants to surf" line make some sense, might as well say there's great surf down at Vicco Harbour, get a deal with Port.....it's the Surf Coast, down by Eastern View or Cathedral, somewhere with a view and an endless line to the horizon (with Sniffy)

We get well compensated or he stays. If he wants to waste the final 4 years of his career sooking well that's on him. Enjoy sitting at a bar when you're 50 saying what you could've been lol
This x 1000. If it doesn’t work for us. We don’t do it. He has contractual obligations to CFC. If he decides to sit out, sulk, so be it.
Or…..llllllllHe can have a crack, hook in and have a great year like Gibbs, and we re visit next year.
Time to stand firm baggers. Do what’s best for the club moving forward.
I’m backing GW and CD in. Cmon!

Honestly, Charlie is a pretty simple bloke. If a deal doesn't get done, it'll be because the clubs who want him didn't want to cough up. He won't blame Carlton for not trading him for unders. He'll show up to preseason probably quite oblivious to the drama and assuming that everyone will still love him. He'll cop some good-natured flack from a few teammates, they'll start kicking balls again, and everything will be back to normalish.

We'll have a new leadership group that he's not part of, he'll have a new line coach who will sell him on the changes that we're implementing. There will be an understanding that some players are just not built to play the "team game", but that the team game can be built to make use of those players anyway.

And his manager will remind him that he can try to get out again next year, but that his best chance of doing so will be to make himself such a tantalising option that clubs will be selling the farm for him.
