I don't buy that it's a negotiating tactic. A better negotiating tactic is demanding what you want.

They trying the amazing tactic of keeping quiet and hoping the otherside bids against itself in a panic.
When they meet they're probably sitting in silence, wearing sun glasses, holding a newspaper while looking in a different direction.

Think that's the same deal I've suggested would likely be agreed to come Wednesday afternoon/evening

But I was thinking this morning if we could get involved in a 3-team trade including GWS to help facilitate Aleer to St Kilda, so something like:

Geelong In: Marshall, Pick 50
Geelong Out: Pick 19, one of 2025 Pick 40/2026 second-round pick

St Kilda In: Aleer, 2025 first round pick (Geelong)
St Kilda Out: Marshall, Pick 50

GWS In: one of 2025 Pick 40/2026 second-round pick
GWS Out: Aleer

My thoughts behind the 2025 or 2026 second round pick is I'm not sure if GWS want 3 picks in closhish proximity this year or would rather the flexibility of one next year instead

It was always about the cash and not the picks when it came to Aleer.
SOS being the knucklehead that he is, couldn't do the numbers and the bean counters had to reign him in.

SOS holds a deep grudge with Carlton because of the way he claims he was treated (every Carlton supporter I know was happy to see the back of him), to then treat Aleer with a greater level of disrepect and lack of integrity is the height of irony.

Marshall and Curnow are both big name players. Arguably the two biggest names where there's a chance we'll see trades occur (unless there's a few late surprises with other big names appearing).

If anyone thinks these deals are dead with 3 full days of trade period to go then perhaps just go outside and draw in some fresh air. Look at Bailey Smith last year - he was never staying at the Bulldogs - he was only ever going to Geelong - and he'd already purchased his property on the coast in August. And you guessed it - the deal was supposedly done right on the 7.30pm deadline :D

Curnow (like Smith) is also managed by Connors. He knows the game and he knows how to get deals done if that's what his player wants. Marshall (via his manager) has already said publicly he wants to be traded to Geelong - St Kilda have known for a while this would likely be the outcome if they brought in TDK.

Trade period is a carefully orchestrated and heavily manipulated exercise by the AFL, and is primarily aimed at rolling out of GF week and ensuring that the sport remains on the front and back pages. Deals for players like Curnow and Marshall (if done) are only ever going to be made public right as the grim reaper rings the bell.

Genuine question: why wouldn't we look at Aleer?

We could but hes only leaving the Giants to get game time (he wont be best 22 there) and he probably wouldn't be best 22 for us unless sdk went. He'd be useful depth but for his sake he needs a club where he can play every week.

I agree with all that but the reality is it was always going through with smith because he was uncontracted and coming off injury.

This time Carlton and St kilda can just refuse to trade.

Damian Barrett on Trade Radio just said Carlton have told us they want Miers if they trade Curnow to us.

Thanks but no thanks 😂

Miers i wouldn't do but stengle i would (reluctantly). I wouldn't do mannagh unless he forced it because he got offered huge money and wanted it-hes too good to push out.

No its not.

A 24yo fit & firing Curnow, yes.

A 29yo Curnow with busted knees, no.

Curnow will only be traded for overs due to his contract status. Its this way or no trade.

I get that, however all I really took from what Mackie said on Trade Radio was "I'm confident we can get both deals done". That was enough for me.

Carlton and St Kilda are both in the situation of having name players say publicly that they want out. That's different to some players saying they're exploring options. If I was a supporter of either club I'd not want to see those blokes running around in my clubs colors after they've publicly said they want out. And even though they don't say it publicly, I'm sure that's how some people at board level - footy department level at those clubs think as well.

"Why are we paying blokes $800k - $1m who don't want to be here"

In a normal world yes but gubby is senile.

Based on how his manager cracked it last night aleer wont go near St kilda.

You must have been listening to a different interview.

They have been told by their mum that they aren't allowed to play with him (Aleer) anymore.

The reality is they'd be able to walk him through in the PSD if they were willing to pay what they originally offered.
Nobody is matching that offer and he'd get through to the Aints for zero draft picks.
GWS said they weren't putting up much of a fight to keep him anyway.

The Saints out of the blue don't want him anymore. Pathetic!!!
Their word means less than zero now.

After 2x years of courting this guy and getting his hopes up that he was going to make huge $$$, they simply pull out mid trade week with zero serious explanation.

Even just a few days ago, old-mate grubby Allen literally said "we'll get it done" regarding Aleer... and "we have plenty more cash to splash". All of a sudden... NOPE! Sorry bud.

It's a serious scumbag move by one of the most putrid clubs in the AFL.

Hopefully other clubs, players and managers have long memories about this very poor effort.

I'm actually angry for Aleer, and I have no skin in the game. Imagine how dirty he'd be with them.
