Essendon have said he won't be traded (despite their fans all telling us its just a tactic). Essendon have refused to listen to offers or negotiate at all. Merrett wants out and Hawthorn are looking to improve their midfield. We've had to try and table offers through Zac's manager with Essendon stonewalling and maintaining he won't be traded.

So we've put forward our best offer publicly (which is excellent) as one last go at the player we want most to make sure the refusal to trade is not just a tactic. The time limit is obviously there so we still have time to negotiate with other clubs for a different midfield option using those picks.

Imagine Hawthorn take Essendon at their word, we do a different trade using our assets and then find out the "we won't trade him" was just a tactic to up the offer. Everyone looks silly. So we put forward our best offer and set a time limit to see if negotiations will start and if not (realising Essendon indeed had no intention of ever trading) pursue alternative options using the assets we have.
