2025 AFL Draft and Trade Dates:

Fri Oct 3 - Fri Oct 10: 2025 Free Agency Period
Mon Oct 6 - Wed Oct 15: 2025 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period
Wed Nov 19 - Thu Nov 20: 2025 Telstra AFL Draft

It’s actually his handballing that is better than his kicking. Some of his handballs reminded me of Greg Williams, and he was also quite slow, but the modern game favours athletes over footballers. It would be nice if Max could kick like George, and if George could run at 90% of Max’s top speed!

It's possible I have messed up the quote from Scott - he might have said something like he is an elite user of the ball and was referring to his handballing as you've mentioned, rather than his kicking. Almost certain he used the word elite though!

What's the latest with Toby Conway? He looked very impressive in 2024 but just couldn't get his body right this season, seems like the ruck spot is his for the taking if he's fit
I personally think his body can't handle the rigs of AFL unfortunately 😕. Yeah he has huge talent but is always injured. If he was out of contract with the current amount of injuries his had it would be unlikely he would get a new contract

Nah you are correct. Was kicking.

The guys kicks it ok.

Still… grain of salt stuff.

Scott will mention the good stuff but we all know there’s some bad stuff in his game.

The way Stevens and Clark played off one another around contests was extremely impressive. Their vision, handballing and ability to create space was a long way above the other mids.

If it came down to a choice between Ted and George, it should be to keep George. Ted looks like a top VFL player who hasn’t quite got enough, except fierce desire, to make the jump to AFL. George has a point of difference (his strength and ability to extract in a pack and dispose of accurately) such that, if he can improve his running a little, might be enough, and certainly enough to persevere with for another year.

During draft week, there were reports that other clubs were looking at Ted. Nothing more was said and obviously he didn’t get an offer.

George was awarded a Brownlow vote in his first game, something that would seem to be a rare achievement.
There was a rumour that west coast have offered Ted a contract if he gets delisted

We don't have any comfirmed details but from what we can gather his latest surgery may have been a make or break deal. They'd only go that way if his body was a point where he wasn't going to have a career anyway.

Any chance Port sink in 26 …. Id love to think their comp pick would be so enticing they would not want to pass it up…. but I agree matching is most likely. I notice Lord is also OOC … and they will have points to consider… if they get. Cochrane it will be complicated for them...

If we were sneaky like Brisbane … we would tell them that if Butters does happen to be let go as a free agent then maybe a R1 pick might be available for another trade…like soldo for example ...or some such insignificant player. .. and the sneak Lions would get away with it..where as we would have media avalanche come down on us..
I was thinking the same thing. Why would port be dumb enough to deal themselves out of the compensation pick? Works out better for everyone if they don't match and then clubs come to agreement on another trade which satisfies Port.

I would not be surprised if he slipped through to rookie draft he is basically George Stevens but not as good on ball.
He is not for us

There's all but zero percent chance of Greeves slipping through to the rookie draft - the only way that happens is some serious off field incident happens between now and draft night

The more likely outcome is that he goes in the first round - he's continually been ranked in the mid-teens power ratings, with Twomey's most recent Phantom Form Guide having him at 16

Earlier this year Hawthorn tried to have him listed as an NGA player for them due to his indigenous background, and based on them working with him last year but that was rejected by the AFL

He'll be a wanted player

Yeah, bringing in Worpel probably pushes Stevens back a bit in the queue. Though I recall Scott praising Stevens' kicking as elite, which gives him a point of difference among our midfielders.

Seems it all comes down to his lack of pace and whether that can be overcome in modern footy.
I've not watched a great deal of Stevens, and I hear a lot of chat about his lack of pace. A couple of questions...

1. Over what distance is he actually slow. First 15m, 25, 50 or the 100m etc...
2. Realistically, what are the chances of increasing his pace in the area needed with dedicated running/sprinting programs on the off season?

I mean, if he's slow over say the first 20m by 1.5 second compared to other mids, can that deficit be made up with specific training over an off/pre season, or are we talking only marginal gains from that kind of stuff?

In the VFL?

Yes. No guarantees they make it but they looked a big cut above the rest around the contests.

I don't think Clohesy has the class or composure to make it at AFL level. And if Knevitt is going to make it it's likely to be in a more outside roaming wing role. He's just too static, fumbly and reactive on the inside.

He doesn’t lack the speed or fitness to roam all over the ground, from contest to contest, for a full game. He just lacks a high top speed, such that if his opponent gets away from him, he has no chance of putting much pressure on let alone catching the guy.

I recall reading that he worked on his pace last summer, and he did seem a little better, but I don’t know if he can improve further. He seems very driven, even from when he was given 2 VFL games in the year before he was drafted, so I think he will try everything he can to improve.

I'm amazed that hasn't been coached out of him yet. He actually stands still at stoppages regularly.

Your coach will pull you up on that stuff in u-10s. He's a weird player, in that he's actually meant to be pretty quick, but he plays as slowly as anybody on our list.

I reckon you gotta be 2x cuts above VFL level to be ok.

Slow over all distances and lacks agility as well. Would need to slim down further for agility improvements

Yeah. He just seems to be a total introvert, lacking confidence in himself. It's like he sees Danger, and Baz, and Butters or some other name player in there, and he just hangs back, not believing he should even be there.

There are a few of us here who want to see Knevitt tried in the backline. With Worpel and Bruhn available, his chances of finding a spot in the midfield seem more limited than last year.

Knevitt’s marking could be so valuable down back. He is the same height and wiry build as Mackie was. He just needs some confidence that he is good enough for AFL, and that can come more easily playing down back. Even Nick Daicos can play hbf, so it must be easy :D

Everyone has argued this for every FA deal since it began.

So why is Geelong not catching on to what everyone is doing? Is it true that we are still the only club to have traded for a free agent?
Because nobody has done it AFAIK - nobody.

We are not the only club that has traded for a player eligible for FA.

I think that Jeremy Cameron is the only RFA who has had his deal “matched”, but there is not much we could have done about that.
