Very little discussion or care in here about who we pick with our first pick… can’t necessarily blame other teams for telling us where to go with the draft pick when our own supporters aren’t even that excited or interested

It's too early. Give it a couple weeks when the mocks start to come out and posters will start getting attached to their favourites.

There's just too much ambiguity at present for a pick like ours.

The guy someone likes might not even be available, or he might go in the fifties. That hasn't been sorted out yet.

Is it a good anything draft?? From the discussions it seems a very crap and intensely compromised draft.

I like this
A) We don’t have much defensive depth.
B) Even if he plays VFL most of the year he provides leadership to that group.
Good small defenders are worth it. He is still only 32 next year so not that old.

Our small defensive stocks are not batting deep, so it makes sense.

Guthrie I would have taken a punt on for minimal coin or rookie, but the club has a good reason to go the other way and has the medical info to make that better judgement

It's a weaker draft, and poor on key position depth, particularly defenders.

It's similar to '23 in that respect in terms of quality, but '23 lacked midfielders while being heavy on utilities, smalls, and KPP's.

If I had to guess, we'll probably take a half back flanker or project mid at 19, match Mellor, and then get out of there until the rookie draft.

There's a few that we could go after. Scott typically prefers transitional types over pure first possession players, so Phillipou, Hibbins-Hargraves, Onley, Oudshoorn-Bennier, and Barker are a few that should be in our range.

Phillipou and Hibbins-Hargraves have a bit of FIGJAM to them, and don't sound like typical Wells selections in that respect, although Smith might have changed the approach there.

Barker has Wells written all over him IMO. High ceiling, boom or bust Ollie Dempsey style player, but off a mid year ACL.

Suspect the Crows pick him up right before us though being an SA boy, and their need for a bit of outside run.

Rodriguez and Swadling are a couple others out of WA. A bit more bankable as players (particularly Rodriguez) but probably lack the ceiling of some of the aforementioned names.

Guess it depends on what they want. In a weaker draft, I don't mind the idea of just picking massive boom or bust players tbh.

We can always find and develop role players anyway. I'd take Sumner-Pickett (cousin of Kozzy) late for the same reasons.

The point is more so that if Stewart is fit, the flow down effect is that Zac Guthrie and/or Henry are released to play on a smaller player.
Which imo was completely beside my point.

He's AFL standard depth that none of the 1st to 3rd year players are in his position.

So was rightly retained.

1. Kolo wasn't fit.
2. Stewart and Kolo are not his competition.
3. He is the only small defender not in the team on the list that IS AFL standard.

Bailey should have kicked on Clark playing in defence in the GF. You reckon he has that much influence on Bews? I know he wouldn't have.

Should be retained.
Still easily our best lock down defender and a rare coaching blunder he hasn't played more

Has been promised to be re-rookied if they have to delist him.

Hasn’t George had other clubs keen - remember reading Crows were? So he might have the choice of a 1-2 year senior deal elsewhere or a 1 year rookie spot with us?

I’d also like to retain him, it’s not every day an inside mid gets a Brownlow vote on debut.

To my knowledge there hasn’t been any contract offers from other clubs at this stage.

I have to admit, retaining a 32yo who saw out the year in the VFL for depth is a bit much, especially given our record with later picks.

If two of our best-22 defenders are out in 2025 and he still doesn't make the side, I don't see what glass has to break for him to be in it a year later.

He doesn't get it as a "choice" at the same time as such - national draft comes first :)

And if he goes as a senior, full-list player, then it's always 2 years to start.
